Fine tuning the correlation limit of spatio-temporal signal space separation for magnetoencephalography.

Head, jaw and tongue movements contribute to speech artifacts in magnetoencephalography (MEG). Their sources lay close to MEG sensors, therefore, the spatio-temporal signal space separation method (tSSS), specifically suppressing nearby artifacts, can be used for speech artifact suppression. After data reconstruction by signal space separation (referred as SSS), tSSS identifies artifacts by their correlated temporal behavior inside and outside the sensor helmet. The artifacts to be eliminated are thresholded by the quantitative level of this correlation determined by correlation limit (CL). Un

Human visual motion areas determined individually by magnetoencephalography and 3D magnetic resonance imaging.

We used magnetoencephalography to study inter-individual locational difference in the extrastriate region which responds to visual motion. Magnetic responses to visual motion onset from the right temporo-occipital area were recorded from 12 subjects. All the subjects had clear responses to apparent or random dot coherent motion. The origins of these responses was investigated by use of the single equivalent current dipole model. The nearest scalp to the origin also was identified for each subject, which may be useful in transcranial stimulation studies. Although the magnetic responses of all t

High-dimensional inference for functional regression with an application to the Alzheimer's disease magnetoencephalography study.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, chronic neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide. A new clinical magnetoencephalography (MEG) study was conducted to identify neural activity biomarkers and key brain regions in AD. Traditional methods for analyzing MEG data, which typically extract features from power spectral density, suffer from information loss. Furthermore, functional regression with variable selection tends to produce non-robust results, making it less ideal for drawing reliable scientific conclusions. To address these challenges, we propose a high-dimensional hyp

Magnetoencephalography reveals differences in brain activations for fast and slow responses to simple multiplications.

Despite decades of studies, it is still an open question on how and where simple multiplications are solved by the brain. This fragmented picture is mostly related to the different tasks employed. While in neuropsychological studies patients are asked to perform and report simple oral calculations, neuroimaging and neurophysiological studies often use verification tasks, in which the result is shown, and the participant must verify the correctness. This MEG study aims to unify the sources of evidence, investigating how brain activation unfolds in time using a single-digit multiplication produc

The Effect of Botulinum Toxin on Network Connectivity in Cervical Dystonia: Lessons from Magnetoencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological management of cervical dystonia (CD) is considered to be symptomatic in effect, rather than targeting the underlying pathophysiology of the disease. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a direct measure of neuronal activity, while accepted as a modality for pre-surgical mapping in epilepsy, has never been used to explore the effect of pharmacotherapy in movement disorders. METHODS: Resting state MEG data were collected from patients with CD, pre- and post-botulinum toxin injections. All of these patients exhibited good clinical benefit with botulinum toxin. Resting state

Magnetoencephalography for clinical pediatrics: the effect of head positioning on measurement of somatosensory-evoked fields.

OBJECTIVE: At present, whole-head MEG systems are designed to accommodate adult heads, thereby introducing a technical issue unique to pediatric MEG. It is known that magnetic field strength decreases as a function of 1/distance(2). For pediatric patients, we questioned whether re-positioning the head to minimize the distance between the expected source location and the MEG sensor array would significantly improve source measurement. METHODS: Somatosensory-evoked fields (SEFs) were recorded in 17 children (mean=4.96 years) with their head placed centrally in the MEG, and then re-positioned la

Does very premature birth affect the functioning of the somatosensory cortex?--A magnetoencephalography study.

Increased survival of extremely low birth weight infants has led to a need for new prognostic methods to predict possible future neurological impairment. We investigated the early development of the somatosensory system by recording the somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) during natural sleep at fullterm age in 16 very prematurely born infants and 16 healthy newborns born at term. The purpose was to determine possible changes in the function of the somatosensory cortex in the prematurely born infants by comparing the latency, strength, location and morphology of the SEFs with those of

Treatment effects of Fast ForWord demonstrated by magnetoencephalography (MEG) in a child with developmental dyslexia.

Treatment effects of Fast ForWord, hypothesized to ameliorate temporal processing deficits, were demonstrated by magnetoencephalography in a child with dyslexia using four paradigms: Word/Non-word Reading (NW), Grapheme-to-Phoneme Matching (GP), Verbal, and Spatial Working Memory (VWM, SWM). Shifts in brain activation from right inferior frontal and temporal to left frontal, bilateral supramarginal, and transverse temporal regions occurred during GP. During NW, shifts progressed from (1) right or bilateral anterior and superior to (2) left, inferior frontal, to (3) left, superior posterior tem

Spatiotemporal dynamics of lexical and morphosyntactic planning during language production revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Fluent sentence production relies on the precise and timely coordination of lexical retrieval, morphosyntactic planning, and motor execution. While a left-dominant fronto-parieto-temporal network has been identified for these subcomponents of sentence production, less is known about the time course of engagement of these regions. One key issue is the extent to which the engagement of neural regions is sequential. The aim of the present study was to delineate spatiotemporal patterns of subcomponents of sentence production, namely lexical retrieval, inflection, and constituent assembly, and iden

Magnetoencephalography monitoring of hypnosis-induced modulation of event-related brain responses by hypnosis.

Hypnosis is increasingly used in a medical context. However, the hypnotic process is dynamic, and we currently lack specific and reliable biomarkers to diagnose and rigorously monitor the patient's response to hypnotic suggestions. Here, we aimed to identify physiological biomarkers by investigating cerebral event-related responses in an oddball paradigm using a magnetoencephalography-based method. Twenty volunteers with different suggestibility levels were exposed to standard and deviant sounds as part of an oddball paradigm. Subjects were monitored in three distinct conditions: critical cons

On-scalp magnetoencephalography based on optically pumped magnetometers to investigate temporal lobe epilepsy.

Cryogenic magnetoencephalography (MEG) has a lower yield in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) than in extratemporal lobe epilepsy. The advent of optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) might change this situation thanks to on-scalp MEG. This study aims to investigate the detection/localization accuracy of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) using on-scalp MEG in TLE and the added value of face-OPMs. Eleven patients underwent a 1-h MEG recording with OPMs placed both on the scalp (flexible cap, scalp-OPMs) and on the face (glasseslike structure, face-OPMs). Nine patients underwent cryogenic MEG.

Performance of optically pumped magnetometer magnetoencephalography: validation in large samples and multiple tasks.

Objective.Current commercial magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems detect neuro-magnetic signals using superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which require liquid helium as cryogen and have many limitations during operation. In contrast, optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) technology provides a promising alternative to conventional SQUID-MEG. OPMs can operate at room temperature, offering benefits such as flexible deployment and lower costs. However, the validation of OPM-MEG has primarily been conducted on small sample sizes and specific regions of interest in the brain, lack

Functional network disruption in cognitively unimpaired autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease: a magnetoencephalography study.

Understanding the nature and onset of neurophysiological changes, and the selective vulnerability of central hub regions in the functional network, may aid in managing the growing impact of Alzheimer's disease on society. However, the precise neurophysiological alterations occurring in the pre-clinical stage of human Alzheimer's disease remain controversial. This study aims to provide increased insights on quantitative neurophysiological alterations during a true early stage of Alzheimer's disease. Using high spatial resolution source-reconstructed magnetoencephalography, we investigated regio

Preliminary Observations of Resting-State Magnetoencephalography in Nonmedicated Children with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background: Cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) network alterations are hypothesized to contribute to symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To date, very few studies have examined whether CSTC network alterations are present in children with OCD, who are medication naive. Medication-naive pediatric imaging samples may be optimal to study neural correlates of illness and identify brain-based markers, given the proximity to illness onset. Methods: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data were analyzed at rest, in 18 medication-naive children with OCD (M = 12.1 years ±2.0 standard deviati

Abnormal neural oscillations in clinical high risk for psychosis: a magnetoencephalography method study.

BACKGROUND: Neural oscillations directly reflect the rhythmic changes of brain activities during the resting state or while performing specific tasks. Abnormal neural oscillations have been discovered in patients with schizophrenia. However, there is limited evidence available on abnormal spontaneous neural oscillations in clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P). The brain signals recorded by the magnetoencephalography (MEG) technique are not to be disrupted by the skull and scalp. METHODS: In this study, we applied the MEG technique to record the resting-state neural activities in CHR-P. Th

Magnetoencephalography to confirm epileptiform discharges mimicking small sharp spikes in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether magnetoencephalography (MEG) can identify epileptiform discharges mimicking small sharp spikes (SSSs) on scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed simultaneous scalp EEG and MEG recordings of 83 consecutive patients with TLE and 49 with extra-TLE (ETLE). RESULTS: SSSs in scalp EEG were detected in 15 (18.1%) of 83 TLE patients compared to only two (4.1%) of 49 ETLE patients (p = 0.029). Five of the 15 TLE patients had MEG spikes with concurrent SSSs in EEG, but neither of the 2 ETLE p

Abnormal functional connectivity under somatosensory stimulation in migraine: a multi-frequency magnetoencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: Although altered neural networks have been demonstrated in recent MEG (magnetoencephalography) research in migraine patients during resting state, it is unknown whether this alteration can be detected in task-related networks. The present study aimed to investigate the abnormalities of the frequency-specific somatosensory-related network in migraine patients by using MEG. METHODS: Twenty-two migraineurs in the interictal phase and twenty-two sex- and age-matched healthy volunteers were studied using a whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system. Bilateral Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Reshapes Resting-State Brain Networks: A Magnetoencephalography Assessment.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can noninvasively induce brain plasticity, and it is potentially useful to treat patients affected by neurological conditions. However, little is known about tDCS effects on resting-state brain networks, which are largely involved in brain physiological functions and in diseases. In this randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study on healthy subjects, we have assessed the effect of bilateral tDCS applied over the sensorimotor cortices on brain and network activity using a whole-head magnetoencephalography system. Bilateral tDCS, with the catho

Test-retest reliability of resting-state magnetoencephalography power in sensor and source space.

Several studies have reported changes in spontaneous brain rhythms that could be used as clinical biomarkers or in the evaluation of neuropsychological and drug treatments in longitudinal studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG). There is an increasing necessity to use these measures in early diagnosis and pathology progression; however, there is a lack of studies addressing how reliable they are. Here, we provide the first test-retest reliability estimate of MEG power in resting-state at sensor and source space. In this study, we recorded 3 sessions of resting-state MEG activity from 24 hea
