Metal-organic magnets with large coercivity and ordering temperatures up to 242°C.

Magnets derived from inorganic materials (e.g., oxides, rare-earth-based, and intermetallic compounds) are key components of modern technological applications. Despite considerable success in a broad range of applications, these inorganic magnets suffer several drawbacks, including energetically expensive fabrication, limited availability of certain constituent elements, high density, and poor scope for chemical tunability. A promising design strategy for next-generation magnets relies on the versatile coordination chemistry of abundant metal ions and inexpensive organic ligands. Following thi

Weak Ergodicity Breaking and Quantum Many-Body Scars in Spin-1 XY Magnets.

We study the spin-1 XY model on a hypercubic lattice in d dimensions and show that this well-known nonintegrable model hosts an extensive set of anomalous finite-energy-density eigenstates with remarkable properties. Namely, they exhibit subextensive entanglement entropy and spatiotemporal long-range order, both believed to be impossible in typical highly excited eigenstates of nonintegrable quantum many-body systems. While generic initial states are expected to thermalize, we show analytically that the eigenstates we construct lead to weak ergodicity breaking in the form of persistent oscilla

A new approach to the synthesis of heteronuclear propeller-like single molecule magnets.

Propeller-like [Fe(4)(L)(2)(dk)(6)] complexes, in which Hdk is a β-diketone and H(3)L is a tripodal alcohol, R-C(CH(2)OH)(3), exhibit tunable magnetic anisotropy barriers and retain their magnetic memory effect when chemically anchored on metal surfaces. Heteronuclear analogues of these M(4) complexes have been sought to afford a library of compounds with different total spin (S) values, but synthetic efforts described so far gave solid solutions containing M(4) in addition to the desired M(3)M' species. We now present a novel synthetic route to M(3)M' complexes featuring a central chromium(II

[Improved fixation of finger prostheses by means of intramedullary titanium anchors and magnets].

BACKGROUND: A small series of patients with traumatic amputation of fingers have undergone treatment with a new technique using endomedullar osseointegrated titanium implant device that magnetically holds the finger prosthesis. METHODS: A two-stage reconstruction procedure with endomedullar osseointegrated titanium implants was performed to attach a finger prosthesis to the proximal, middle and distal phalanx. The first stage included implantation of the titanium fixture into the medullary cavity canal of the phalanx. After a 2-month rest period to allow the fixture to firmly osseointegrate w

The effects of samarium-cobalt magnets and pulsed electromagnetic fields on tooth movement.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the application of either samarium cobalt magnets or pulsed electromagnetic fields could increase the rate and amount of orthodontic tooth movement observed in guinea pigs. In addition, the objective was to evaluate the effect of a magnetic field on bony physiology and metabolism and to monitor for possible systemic side effects. Fifteen grams of laterally directed orthodontic force were applied to move the maxillary central incisors of a sample of 18 young male Hartley guinea pigs divided into three groups: group 1, an orthodontic coil spring

[On the contribution of magnets in sequelae of facial paralysis. Preliminary clinical study].

This trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of EPOREC 1 500 magnets as an adjuvant to rehabilitation following peripheral facial paralysis. Magnetotherapy is used in many other specialties, and in particular in rheumatology. The properties of repulsion between identical poles were used to decrease the effect of sequelae in the form of contractures on the facial muscles. There were two groups of 20 patients: one group with physiotherapy only and the other with standard rehabilitation together with the use of magnets. These 40 patients had facial paralysis of various origins (trauma, excisi

Internal-space-free passive shimming for Halbach magnets via axial displacement of magnetic blocks.

To address the issue of conventional passive shimming (PS) occupying the internal space of Halbach magnets, this study explores a PS method that improves magnetic-field homogeneity by controlling the axial displacement of the magnet blocks composing the Halbach magnet. Based on the spherical harmonic decomposition method (SHDM), the Axial-Moving Array of Magnetic Blocks configurations (AAMBs) capable of generating the corresponding spherical harmonic terms (SHs) is constructed. By optimizing the movement step size of each AAMBs, the inhomogeneous magnetic-field components of the Halbach magnet

Optimal Control Drives Ultrafast and Energy-Efficient Magnetization Switching in Van der Waals Magnets.

The accelerating expansion of data-centric technologies is sharply increasing the energy burden of information storage, placing unprecedented pressure on the efficiency of magnetic switching. Conventional field-driven reversal, once the foundation of magnetic memory, has become impractical in modern architectures due to its high energy cost, limited spatial selectivity, and poor scalability, leading to the dominance of current-driven techniques based on spin-transfer- and spin-orbit-torque (STT, SOT). Here we show that optimal control theory (OCT) enables precisely shaped magnetic-field pulses

Nanotube Encapsulation of Single-Molecule and 1D van der Waals Magnets: Confinement-Tuned Magnetism.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnets are highly promising for quantum technologies, spintronics, and data storage, yet their integration into practical devices is frequently impeded by chemical reactivity, aggregation, or loss of magnetic function during processing. Encapsulation within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) has emerged as a versatile strategy to protect, isolate, align, and electronically address these fragile magnetic species at the atomic scale. This review provides a comprehensive overview of encapsulated magne

Density Matrix Embedding Theory-Based Multiconfigurational Quantum Chemistry Approach to Lanthanide Single-Ion Magnets.

Accurate and efficient theoretical descriptions of lanthanide systems based on ab initio electronic structure theory remain highly challenging due to the complex interplay of strong electronic correlation and significant relativistic effects in 4f electrons. The composite multiconfigurational quantum chemistry method that combines the state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) approach with subsequent state interaction (SI) treatment of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), abbreviated as CASSCF-SO, has emerged as the preferred method for ab initio studies of lanthanide system

Endoscopic removal of high-powered magnets from the appendiceal orifice in an asymptomatic child.

Ingestion of multiple magnets can lead to serious complications, including foreign body appendicitis. Appendicitis usually develops when an object blocks the appendiceal orifice, though outcomes may vary from asymptomatic passage to acute inflammation. While several case reports have documented appendectomy for magnet-induced foreign body appendicitis, and one report described endoscopic removal of magnets in a patient with appendicitis, this case is the first to report successful endoscopic removal of high-powered magnets from the appendix in an asymptomatic child. This intervention potential

Ingestion of Multiple Magnets by Children: Diagnosis and Management When Ingestion is not Witnessed.

AIM: Foreign body ingestion, particularly that of magnets, is a significant issue for children aged 6 months to 3 years due to their prevalence in toys and household items. Most ingested foreign bodies pass naturally, but 10%-20% of such cases require endoscopic removal, and <1% require surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed numerous non-specific mesenteric lymph nodes. Plain abdominal radiography identified multiple high-radiopacity foreign bodies, 4.5 mm in diameter. RESULTS: We performed an emer

Small Rare Earth Magnets Adhered to Pharyngeal Tissue in a Pediatric Emergency Department Patient.

BACKGROUND: Small rare earth magnets pose a known health risk to children and many cases of ingestion and aspiration with associated complications have been described. More unusual, but also seen in children, are retained foreign bodies in the oropharynx that require extraction. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 3-year-old boy with persistent left-sided sore throat 1 h after ingestion of several 3-mm spherical rare earth magnets. No foreign bodies were visible in the oropharynx on examination; however, a chest radiograph revealed two adjacent magnets within the lower pharyngeal space, as

Polymetallic oxalate-based 2D magnets: soluble molecular precursors for the nanostructuration of magnetic oxides.

Here we describe the synthesis and magnetic characterization of a family of 2D polymetallic oxalate-bridged polymeric networks with general formula [M(II)(H(2)O)(2)](3)[M(III)(ox)(3)](2)(18-crown-6)(2) (M(III) = Cr, Fe; M(II) = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; 18-crown-6 = C(12)H(24)O(6)). Depending on the nature of the trivalent metal ion, they exhibit ferro- (Cr(3+)) or ferrimagnetic (Fe(3+)) ordering in the 3.6-20 K interval. In contrast with most of the oxalate-bridged CPs reported so far, these complexes do not need any additional templating cation for their assembly and represent the first series of oxal

Group ingestion of high-powered magnets in children-A clinical and public health challenge.

High-powered magnets are a preventable cause of serious gastrointestinal injury in children, with ingestion often resulting in hospitalization and occasionally surgery. We report six classmates, aged 5-6 years, who ingested high-powered magnets during a single school day after mistaking them for candy. All presented to our emergency department within 12 h of ingestion. Three underwent endoscopy and three were managed with serial imaging; all magnets were retrieved or passed spontaneously, with no obstruction, perforation, or surgery. The near-simultaneous presentations strained endoscopy resou

Quantum-embedded equation-of-motion coupled-cluster approach to single-atom magnets on surfaces.

We investigate electronic states and magnetic properties of transition-metal atoms on surfaces using projection-based density embedding that combines equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) theory with density functional theory (DFT). As a case study, we explore Co adsorbed on MgO(001), an ideal model for single-atom magnet design, known for its record magnetic anisotropy among transition-metal adatoms. Periodic DFT-based calculations of the magnetic anisotropy energy, i.e., the energy required to rotate the magnetization from parallel to perpendicular relative to the

Coupled-cluster treatment of complex open-shell systems: the case of single-molecule magnets.

We investigate the reliability of two cost-effective coupled-cluster methods for computing spin-state energetics and spin-related properties of a set of open-shell transition-metal complexes. Specifically, we employ the second-order approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2) method and projection-based embedding that combines equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) with density functional theory (DFT). The performance of CC2 and EOM-CCSD-in-DFT is assessed against EOM-CCSD. The chosen test set includes two hexaaqua transition-metal complexes containing Fe(I

Magnetic Mishaps-Small Bowel Obstruction Caused by Ingested Magnets Complicated by Appendicitis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Magnet ingestions are a growing pediatric emergency due to the use of widely available stronger magnets in toys. A legislative ban briefly reduced injuries, but cases rose after its reversal in federal court. Magnet ingestions are resulting in increasing morbidity and mortality, specifically due to bowel obstruction and perforation. CASE REPORT: We present a complex case involving a child with global developmental delay presenting to the emergency department for evaluation of abdominal pain. While the initial evaluation focused on working up appendicitis, which he was found to h
