Associations between LSAMP gene polymorphisms and major depressive disorder and panic disorder.

The purpose of this case-control genetic association study was to explore potential relationships between polymorphisms in the limbic system-associated membrane protein (LSAMP) gene and mood and anxiety disorders. A total of 21 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the LSAMP gene were analyzed in 591 unrelated patients with the diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) or panic disorder (PD) and in 384 healthy control subjects. The results showed a strong association between LSAMP SNPs and MDD, and a suggestive association between LSAMP SNPs and PD. This is the first evidence of a pos

Shared and disorder-specific functional alterations in generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) show substantial clinical overlap, yet their shared and disorder-specific intrinsic functional abnormalities remain unclear. This study examined regional brain activity and whole-brain functional integration in GAD and MDD using resting-state fMRI. METHODS: Forty-two GAD patients, 43 MDD patients, and 83 healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI. ALFF and FCS were calculated to assess regional spontaneous activity and whole-brain functional integration, respectively. Group differences were tested using voxe

Distinct Biotypes of Visual Perception in Major Depressive Disorder.

Previous studies showed abnormalities in both visual motion perception (VMP) and occipital cortex activity in subjects suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). Can the psychophysical and/or neural markers of visual perception serve for clinical identification of MDD subgroups? To address this yet unresolved issue, we develope a novel analytical framework combining visual perceptual measurement with machine learning clustering to identify MDD subgroups. Within a cohort of 272 individuals with acute MDD, this approach reveals a VMP-positive (VMP-P) biotype characterized by impaired VMP. C

Clinical management of major depressive disorder with comorbid obesity.

Obesity is one of the most prevalent somatic comorbidities in individuals with major depressive disorder and greatly affects the course and prognosis of that disorder. The bidirectional relationship between major depressive disorder and obesity often creates a feedback cycle that challenges both patients and health-care providers. Gaps in interdisciplinary collaboration and limitations in knowledge transfer hinder the effective management of this patient population. This narrative Review synthesises current evidence from obesity and major depressive disorder research, offering a comprehensive

MicroRNAs as Regulators of Neuroinflammation in Major Depressive Disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a globally prevalent mental health condition with a complex pathogenesis and substantial disease burden. However, due to incomplete mechanistic understanding, existing therapeutic strategies frequently yield suboptimal outcomes. This review synthesizes evidence establishing neuroinflammation as a central pathogenic mechanism of MDD, involving elevated proinflammatory cytokines, microglial M1 polarization, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation, and impaired neuroplasticity. Micro ribonucleic acid (miRNA)

Seizure Duration and Electroconvulsive Therapy in Major Depressive Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), wherein a generalized epileptic seizure is induced, is a treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). Currently, it is unclear whether there is an association between seizure length and treatment outcome. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between seizure duration, potential confounding variables, and ECT treatment outcome. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study obtained data from the Swedish National Quality Register for ECT. Patients treated for unipolar MDD with unilateral electrode placement between January

Predictors of Electroconvulsive Therapy Outcome in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. However, few clinical predictors are available to predict the treatment outcome. This study aimed to characterize the response trajectories of MDD patients undergoing ECT treatment and to identify potential clinical and demographic predictors for clinical improvement. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis on data from a multicenter, randomized, blinded, controlled trial with 3 ECT modalities (bifrontal, bitemporal, unilateral). The sample consisted of 239 patients whose demog

Microstructural deficits of the thalamus in major depressive disorder.

Macroscopic structural abnormalities in the thalamus and thalamic circuits have been implicated in the neuropathology of major depressive disorder. However, cytoarchitectonic properties underlying these macroscopic abnormalities remain unknown. Here, we examined systematic deficits of brain architecture in depression, from structural brain network organization to microstructural properties. A multi-modal neuroimaging approach including diffusion, anatomical and quantitative MRI was used to examine structural-related alternations in 56 patients with depression compared with 35 age- and sex-matc

Visual hallucinations following electroconvulsive therapy for major depressive disorder.

A female geriatric patient with major depressive disorder, current episode severe, received eight right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatments over the course of 3 weeks. After her third treatment, she began experiencing brief visual hallucinations, each lasting less than 5 s, consisting of dark to grey coloured, poorly defined geometric shapes and objects. These episodes occurred only during the day with no change in consciousness. With each additional treatment, the episodes increased in frequency, reaching a crescendo of approximately 20 episodes per day. After terminating EC

Suicidal ideation in remitted major depressive disorder predicts recurrence.

INTRODUCTION: Each year almost 800.000 people die from suicide, of which up to 87% are affected by major depressive disorder (MDD). Despite the strong association between suicidality and MDD, it remains unknown if suicidal symptoms during remission put remitted recurrent MDD patients (rrMDD) at risk for recurrence. METHODS: At baseline we compared sociodemographic characteristics and suicidal symptoms in un-medicated rrMDD participants to matched never-depressed controls. We used the HDRS17 and IDS-SR30 to assess suicidal symptoms and depressive symptomatology. Next, we studied the longitudin

Resting posterior alpha power and adolescent major depressive disorder.

For several decades, resting electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha oscillations have been used to characterize neurophysiological alterations related to major depressive disorder. Prior research has generally focused on frontal alpha power and asymmetry despite resting alpha being maximal over posterior electrode sites. Research in depressed adults has shown evidence of hemispheric asymmetry for posterior alpha power, however, the resting posterior alpha-depression link among adolescents remains unclear. To clarify the role of posterior alpha among depressed adolescents, the current study acquired

Subtypes of Major Depressive Disorder Based on Pharmacological Responsiveness.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a descriptive, syndromic diagnosis which will likely be discovered to be more than a single disorder when understood from a pathobiological or pathoetiological perspective. To date, attempts to divide this disorder into more homogenous phenotypes on the basis of signs and symptoms have not yielded more information on the pathobiological or pathoetiological factors that can cause a major depressive episode. This column proposes a new way of dividing MDD into 3 subtypes based on responsiveness to pharmacological treatments that are pharmacologically quite diffe

Thalamocortical connectivity in electroconvulsive therapy for major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can lead to rapid and effective responses in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the precise neural mechanisms of ECT for MDD are still unclear. Previous work has confirmed that thalamocortical circuits play an important role in emotion and cognition. However, the relationship between mechanisms of ECT for MDD and thalamocortical connectivity has not yet been investigated. METHOD: Thalamocortical functional connectivity analysis was performed on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data collected from 28 MDD patients both

High level of pattern glare in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Visual deficits have been reported in abundance by recent studies on major depressive disorder. Pattern glare manifests as visual distortions, such as the symptoms of headache, glare, eyestrain, illusions of shapes, colors, and motion when viewing repetitive striped patterns, of which some can be observed in major depressive disorder. Inspired by what mentioned, the present study aims to explore whether there exists association between pattern glare and major depressive disorder and further attempts to explore possible clinical diagnostic value of pattern glare in major depressive

Mixed features in major depressive disorder: diagnoses and treatments.

For the first time in 20 years, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) updated the psychiatric diagnostic system for mood disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Perhaps one of the most notable changes in the DSM-5 was the recognition of the possibility of mixed symptoms in major depression and related disorders (MDD). While MDD and bipolar and related disorders are now represented by 2 distinct chapters, the addition of a mixed features specifier to MDD represents a structural bridge between bipolar and major depression disorders, and

Neurochemical correlation between major depressive disorder and neurodegenerative diseases.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent and life-threatening forms of mental illnesses affecting elderly people and has been associated with poor cognitive function. Recent evidence suggests a strong relationship between MDD and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), as well as natural processes of aging. Changes in the neuroplasticity, morphology, and neurotransmission in the brain are seem to be associated to both, MDD and neurodegenerative diseases. In addi

Fat distribution and major depressive disorder in late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Substantial evidence exists to indicate bidirectional relationships between obesity and depressive disorders and the importance of fat distribution to this relationship. This analysis used a well-characterized sample of individuals in late adolescence to determine the association between depressive illness and fat distribution. METHOD: Medically healthy 15- to 20-year-olds, one-half of whom had recently begun treatment with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, underwent a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that resulted in diagnostic classification and weekly psychiatric dis
