A systematic review of air pollution as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in South Asia: limited evidence from India and Pakistan.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are major contributors to mortality and morbidity in South Asia. Chronic exposure to air pollution is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, although the majority of studies to date have been conducted in developed countries. Both indoor and outdoor air pollution are growing problems in developing countries in South Asia yet the impact on rising rates of CVD in these regions has largely been ignored. We aimed to assess the evidence available regarding air pollution effects on CVD and CVD risk factors in lower income countries in South Asia. A litera

[Burden of Diabetic Kidney Disease at Global, Regional, and National Levels From 1990 to 2021].

OBJECTIVE: Based on the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2021 data, this study systematically analyzed the trends in the disease burden of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and predicted its burden over the next decade in 204 countries and regions worldwide from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: Data on DKD from the GBD study spanning 1990 to 2021 were analyzed for trends using age-standardized rates (ASRs) and average annual percentage change (AAPC). The Joinpoint Regression Model (JRM) was applied to identify turning points, and the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model was used to forecas

Treatment Accessibility, Availability, and Healthcare Costs for Multiple Myeloma in South Asian Countries.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy with rising incidence globally, including in South Asia. Despite advances in treatment, access to essential drugs, diagnostic tools, and stem cell transplantation remains inconsistent across the region. This study assesses the availability, accessibility, and cost of MM treatments in South Asian countries to identify gaps in care and inform healthcare policy. METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted through a web-based survey targeting physicians managing MM patients in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myan

Graft options for multiligament knee reconstruction among surgeons with limited allograft access: A cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Multiligament knee injuries (MLKIs) are typically treated with ligament reconstruction, yet controversies persist regarding graft selection, surgical techniques, and surgical staging. Although allografts are often used for MLKIs, their availability is limited for surgeons in South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) countries. Consequently, graft preferences are expected to vary distinctively among these surgeons. This study investigates the preferred graft options for reconstructing various ligaments in MLKIs among arthroscopic surgeons with limited allograft acc

Use and application of implementation science theories, models, and frameworks in maternal and child health research in South Asia: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Institutions responsible for implementing and conducting maternal and child health (MCH) programmes and projects in South Asia have accumulated substantial implementation experience across diverse health system contexts. Despite decades of experience, persistent challenges in intervention adoption, quality of delivery, equity of reach, and sustainability remain. Implementation science theories, models, and frameworks (TMFs) offer structured approaches to understand and address these challenges. However, global reviews have consistently found that TMFs are inconsistently selected, i

Perinatal mental health among South Asian immigrant women in Canada: A scoping review protocol.

Perinatal mental health concerns are common and may be heightened among immigrant populations because of migration-related stressors, social isolation, stigma, language barriers, and limited access to culturally safe care. Although previous reviews have examined perinatal mental health among immigrants broadly, evidence focused specifically on South Asian immigrant women in Canada across pregnancy and the postpartum period has not been comprehensively mapped. South Asian women represent one of the largest and fastest-growing immigrant populations in Canada and may experience unique cultural, f

Preparing for climate change.

There is a distinct probability that humankind is changing the climate and at the same time raising the sea level of the world. The most plausible projections we have now suggest a rise in mean world temperature of between 1 degree Celsius and 2 degrees Celsius by 2030--just 40 years hence. This is a bigger change in a smaller period than we know of in the experience of the earth's ecosystems and human societies. It implies that by 2030 the earth will be warmer than at any time in the past 120,000 years. In the same period, we are likely to see a rise of 15-30 centimeters in sea level, partly

Sexually dimorphic dynamics of thyroid axis activity during fasting in rats.

Domestic violence against women is a global issue. An earlier report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, reported that injury caused by domestic violence was the second most common cause of death during pregnancy and in the postpartum period (1). The pregnancy-associated homicide ratio was found to be 1.7 per 100,000 deliveries and firearms were identified as the main source of injury. Domestic violence is more common in developing countries than in the developed world, and rural areas are worse affected than urban ones. The risk factors associated with intimate par

An appraisal of peer-reviewed published literature on Influenza, 2000-2021 from countries in South-East Asia Region.

BACKGROUND: Influenza poses a major public health challenge in South-East Asia Region (SEAR). To address the challenge, there is a need to generate contextual evidence that could inform policy makers and program managers for response preparedness and impact mitigation. The World Health Organization has identified priority areas across five streams for research evidence generation at a global level (WHO Public Health Research Agenda). Stream 1 focuses on research for reducing the risk of emergence, Stream 2 on limiting the spread, Stream 3 on minimizing the impact, Stream 4 on optimizing the tr

Cost-effectiveness of interventions for HIV/AIDS, malaria, syphilis, and tuberculosis in 128 countries: a meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cost-effectiveness analyses have been conducted for many interventions for HIV/AIDS, malaria, syphilis, and tuberculosis, but they have not been conducted for all interventions that are currently recommended in all countries. To support national decision makers in the effective allocation of resources, we conducted a meta-regression analysis of published incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for interventions for these causes, and predicted ICERs for 14 recommended interventions for Global Fund-eligible countries. METHODS: In the meta-regression analysis, we used data from

BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we drew from two widely used summary measures to monitor such changes in population health: disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE). We used these measures to track trends and benchmark progress compared with e

Healthcare Access and Quality Index based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990-2015: a novel analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor estimates generated through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to improve and expand the quantification of personal

Global epidemiological trend of cancer incidence and death in adults aged 60 years and older: a systematic analysis of data from GLOBOCAN 2022 and GBD2021.

BACKGROUND: Updated and comprehensive global assessments of cancer statistics specifically targeting adults aged ≥ 60 years have remained limited. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic epidemiological analysis of cancer burden in this rapidly growing demographic worldwide. METHODS: Population-based data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 and the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2021 were used and analyzed in this study. The main outcomes of this study were age-standardised incidence (ASIR) or mortality rate (ASMR), and average annual percent change (AAPC). A Bayesian ag

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

Global, regional, and national prevalence of child and adolescent overweight and obesity, 1990-2021, with forecasts to 2050: a forecasting study for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Despite the well documented consequences of obesity during childhood and adolescence and future risks of excess body mass on non-communicable diseases in adulthood, coordinated global action on excess body mass in early life is still insufficient. Inconsistent measurement and reporting are a barrier to specific targets, resource allocation, and interventions. In this Article we report current estimates of overweight and obesity across childhood and adolescence, progress over time, and forecasts to inform specific actions. METHODS: Using established methodology from the Global Burd

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2016: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required. OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus.
