Lassa Virus Seroprevalence in Sibirilia Commune, Bougouni District, Southern Mali.

Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic to several nations in West Africa. In Mali, LASV was unknown until an exported case of Lassa fever was reported in 2009. Since that time, rodent surveys have found evidence of LASV-infected Mastomys natalensis rats in several communities in southern Mali, near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Despite increased awareness, to date only a single case of Lassa fever has been confirmed in Mali. We conducted a survey to determine the prevalence of LASV exposure among persons in 3 villages in southern Mali where the presence of infected rodents has been documented. LASV Ig

Factors associated with dog rabies immunisation status in Bamako, Mali.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey in Bamako, Mali, to determine for the first time the seroprevalence of rabies virus antibodies in the dog population and people's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards the disease and its control. Antibody detection was done with the fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (FAVN) test, with a positivity threshold of 0.25IU/ml. We visited 2956 households in 2010 and 2011 and found 379 dogs in 279 households. Data were collected on 279 dog-owning households, on 1017 non-dog-owning households and on 311 dogs. A serum or plasma sample was collecte

Molecular strain typing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in Bamako, Mali.

OBJECTIVE: To identify strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) circulating in Bamako and to examine the relationship between the strains and their drug susceptibility profiles. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional study using spoligotyping to identify strains of MTC recovered from 126 tuberculosis (TB) patients under treatment in Bamako, Mali. RESULT: Three members of the MTC were isolated: M. tuberculosis (71.4%), M. africanum (27.8%) and M. bovis (0.8%). Of these, three strains were found to be the most prevalent: M. tuberculosis T1 (MTB T1; 38.9%), M.

Genomic characterization of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli from children in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is a cause of epidemic and sporadic diarrhea, yet its role as an enteric pathogen is not fully understood. METHODS: We characterized 121 EAEC strains isolated in 2008 as part of a case-control study of moderate to severe acute diarrhea among children 0-59 months of age in Bamako, Mali. We applied multiplex polymerase chain reaction and comparative genome hybridization to identify potential virulence factors among the EAEC strains, coupled with classification and regression tree modeling to reveal combinations of factors most strongly assoc

[Community-based intervention to reduce birth asphyxia mortality in Mali].

Approximately one million newborn babies die every year as a result of birth asphyxia in developing countries. The objectives of this study are to develop the management of birth asphyxia and to establish a community-based surveillance system of vital events in rural areas of Oueléssébougou, Mali. Traditional birth attendants, female leaders of village associations and village health workers were trained to carry out communication activities designed to change behaviours in the management of birth asphyxia. The study has improved health facility-based delivery (from 80 to 93%) and the identifi

The National Schistosomiasis Control Programme in Mali, objectives, organization, results.

Schistosomiasis control started regionally, in the Bandiagara district, and as a component of a dam-building project in 1978. In 1982 a national programme was created. Control was divided into three phases: Preparation, intervention and maintenance. Districts qualifyed for schistosomiasis control activities, when the prevalence for either Schistosoma haematobium or Schistosoma mansoni exceeded 20% and/or the prevalence of persons with intensive infections for either parasite exceeded 5%. Intensive infection was defined as the excretion of more than 50 eggs per 10 ml of urine or the excretion o

Tuberculosis drug resistance in Bamako, Mali, from 2006 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: Although Drug resistance tuberculosis is not a new phenomenon, Mali remains one of the "blank" countries without systematic data. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2014, we enrolled pulmonary TB patients from local TB diagnostics centers and a university referral hospital in several observational cohort studies. These consecutive patients had first line drug susceptibility testing (DST) performed on their isolates. A subset of MDR was subsequently tested for second line drug resistance. RESULTS: A total of 1186 mycobacterial cultures were performed on samples from 522 patients, including

Women's health in urban Mali: social predictors and health itineraries.

Social and marital factors may influence women's health outcomes. This is of particular relevance in sub-Saharan Africa, where women's health indicators lag behind the rest of the world. Our study examines the impact of social mediators of women's health during key events (pregnancy and illness) in urban Mali. In this cross-sectional study, we interviewed 324 women aged 15-80, living in Bamako, the capital city, in 1999. We used mixed quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain detailed histories of pregnancy and illness during specific time periods preceding the survey. We examined the rol

Urinary tract morbidity due to Schistosoma haematobium infection in Mali.

A total of 824 Malian villagers in a region endemic for Schistosoma (S.) haematobium were examined clinically, parasitologically and by abdominal ultrasound. Systematic schistosomicidal treatment had never been applied to this population. Prevalence of S. haematobium infection ranged from 77% in adolescents to 51% in adults older than 40 years. Intensity of infection was generally mild, 91% of all patients excreting less than 100 ova/10 ml urine. Bladder wall enlargement and irregularities, bladder masses, pseudopolyps and dilation of the upper urinary tract were found ultrasonographically in

Outbreak of schistosomiasis among travelers returning from Mali, West Africa.

Schistosomiasis in travelers often remains unrecognized because doctors are unfamiliar with the clinical presentation and diagnosis of this imported disease. We describe the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics associated with an outbreak of schistosomiasis among nonimmune travelers. Of 30 travelers in two consecutive groups, 29 who had swum in freshwater pools in the Dogon area of Mali, West Africa, were followed for 12 months. Twenty-eight (97%) of those 29 became infected; 10 (36%) of the 28 had cercarial dermatitis, and in 15 (54%), Katayama fever developed. Eggs were

Factors Associated with Wuchereria bancrofti Microfilaremia in an Endemic Area of Mali.

Although Wuchereria bancrofti (Wb), the causative agent of lymphatic filariasis, is endemic throughout Mali, the prevalence of Wb microfilaremia (Mf) can vary widely between villages despite similar prevalence of infection as assessed by circulating antigen. To examine this variation, cross-sectional data obtained during screening prior to an interventional study in two neighboring villages in Mali were analyzed. The overall prevalence of Wb, as assessed by Wb CAg (circulating antigen), was 50.3% among 373 participants, aged 14-65. Wuchereria bancrofti Mf-positive and negative individuals appe

Prevalence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Districts of High and Low Endemicity in Mali.

Historically the western sahelian dry regions of Mali are known to be highly endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania major, while cases are rarely reported from the Southern savanna forest of the country. Here, we report baseline prevalence of CL infection in 3 ecologically distinct districts of Mali (dry sahelian, north savanna and southern savanna forest areas). We screened 195 to 250 subjects from 50 to 60 randomly selected households in each of the 6 villages (four from the western sahelian district of Diema in Kayes region, one from the central district of Kolokani a
