In-field pollen consumption by orchard predatory mites detected by metabarcoded molecular gut content analysis.

DNA metabarcoding has become a relatively common tool for studying consumption of plants by arthropod herbivores and identifying pollen collected by pollinating insects. However, studies using molecular gut content analysis to detect pollen-feeding in generalist predators are exceedingly rare. Pollen-feeding is known to be important to the nutritional ecology of many generalist predators and is particularly well studied in phytoseiid mites. In apples, generalist phytoseiids such as Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and the stigmaeid predator, Zetzellia mali (Ewing)

A microRNA allele that emerged prior to apple domestication may underlie fruit size evolution.

The molecular genetic mechanisms underlying fruit size remain poorly understood in perennial crops, despite size being an important agronomic trait. Here we show that the expression level of a microRNA gene (miRNA172) influences fruit size in apple. A transposon insertional allele of miRNA172 showing reduced expression associates with large fruit in an apple breeding population, whereas over-expression of miRNA172 in transgenic apple significantly reduces fruit size. The transposon insertional allele was found to be co-located with a major fruit size quantitative trait locus, fixed in cultivat

Beetles- and fungi-induced volatiles from wild apple trees modulate host selection behavior of Agrilus mali (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Malus sieversii (Ledeb.) M. Roem. (Rosales: Rosaceae), widely recognized as the primary progenitor of Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosales: Rosaceae), is threatened by both Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) and Valsa mali Miyabe et Yamada (Diaporthales: Valsaceae) in China. Notably, A. mali adults prefer wild apple plants damaged by beetles and by fungi, yet the chemical cues driving this phenomenon remain elusive. Through gas chromatography-electroantennography (GC-EAD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), 13 volatiles were identified from healthy, A. mali-infested, and

Changes in skin properties are consequence but not cause of green spot in 'WA 38' apples.

The green spot (GS) disorder impairs appearance and restricts 'WA 38' marketing. The objectives of the present study were to characterize GS in developing 'WA 38' fruit. Green halos around lenticels were the first GS symptoms visible at 47 days after full bloom (DAFB) (GHL stage). Green halos darkened with the onset of red coloring (stage GHGS). By 96 DAFB, GS symptoms began to turn brown and sink relative to the surrounding surface (BHL stage). The first macroscopically visible cracks appeared by 133 DAFB. Most GS (92.5%) were associated with lenticels. Frequency of GS decreased from the prox

Individual phenolic response and peroxidase activity in peel of differently sun-exposed apples in the period favorable for sunburn occurrence.

Extreme weather events like high solar radiation can cause stress in apple fruits (Malus domestica Borkh.). The aim of the study was to make a screening of individual phenols and peroxidase activity in apple peel as a response to sunburn and different sun-exposures in the period when weather conditions are suitable for sunburn occurrence. Apple fruits of 'Golden Delicious' and 'Braeburn' were sampled. Fruit temperature and color were measured prior HPLC-MS(2) and peroxidase activity analyses. Sunburned peel was darker and more yellow-red in comparison to healthy peel, which appeared yellow-gre

Transcriptomic events associated with internal browning of apple during postharvest storage.

BACKGROUND: Postharvest ripening of apple (Malus x domestica) can be slowed down by low temperatures, and a combination of low O2 and high CO2 levels. While this maintains the quality of most fruit, occasionally storage disorders such as flesh browning can occur. This study aimed to explore changes in the apple transcriptome associated with a flesh browning disorder related to controlled atmosphere storage using RNA-sequencing techniques. Samples from a browning-susceptible cultivar ('Braeburn') were stored for four months under controlled atmosphere. Based on a visual browning index, the inne

Geostatistical spatial mapping of soil potassium fractions and targeted fertilization strategies for improving apple productivity and fruit quality in highland orchards.

Potassium (K) deficiency has emerged as a critical constraint for sustainable apple production in highland regions, yet spatial variability of soil K status and site-specific fertilization responses remain poorly characterized. A survey-based study was initiated where soil samples (0–15 and 15–30 cm) were collected from 60 representative apple orchards to analyze various K fractions. Additionally, Geostatistical analysis using semi-variogram modeling in GIS was also used to map the spatial distribution of K, and then a field trial was conducted in orchards with low, medium, and adequate initia

Potential to reduce pesticides in intensive apple production through management practices could be challenged by climatic extremes.

Apples are the third most produced fruit in the world, but their production is often pesticide-intensive. Our objective was to identify options for pesticide reduction using farmer records from 2549 commercial apple fields in Austria during five years between 2010 and 2016. Using generalized additive mixed modeling, we examined how pesticide use was related to farm management, apple varieties, and meteorological parameters, and how it affected yields and toxicity to honeybees. Apple fields received 29.5 ± 8.6 (mean ± SD) pesticide applications per season at a rate of 56.7 ± 22.7 kg ha-1, which

Physiological Characteristics of Sunburn Peel after Apple Debagged.

The bagging of fruits provides efficient protection from high-intensity sunlight and improves fruit color and quality. However, bagged fruit suddenly exposed to bright light can cause sunburn and destroys the peel cell structure. In this study, fruits from ten-year-old apple trees of 'Gala' variety were debagged, and the effect of sunburn on fruits was divided into: (1) normal peels (BFN), (2) peels with albefaction (BFA), and (3) browning (BFB). The non-bagging fruits (NBF) were set as a control to study the physiological characteristics of apple fruits with different levels of sunburn. Our r

Smartphone Application-Enabled Apple Fruit Surface Temperature Monitoring Tool for In-Field and Real-Time Sunburn Susceptibility Prediction.

Heat stress and resulting sunburn is a major abiotic stress in perineal specialty crops. For example, such stress to the maturing fruits on apple tree canopies can cause several physiological disorders that result in considerable crop losses and reduced marketability of the produce. Thus, there is a critical technological need to effectively monitor the abiotic stress under field conditions for timely actuation of remedial measures. Fruit surface temperature (FST) is one of the stress indicators that can reliably be used to predict apple fruit sunburn susceptibility. This study was therefore f

Cross-cultivar prediction of apple SSC: Mitigating biological variability through optical properties and calibration transfer methods.

Non-destructive detection of apple soluble solids content (SSC) is challenged by biological variability. In this study, the visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy of the intact fruit and the optical properties of skin and flesh tissue were compared for SSC prediction across four cultivars ('Aksu', 'Fuji', 'Smith' and 'Ruixue'). Moreover, the performance of model updating and calibration transfer methods, including slope and bias correction (SBC) and parameter-free calibration enhancement (PFCE), was evaluated in cross-cultivar prediction. Results indicated that the models based on flesh-

MdWRKY71 promotes the susceptibility of apple to Glomerella leaf spot by controlling salicylic acid degradation.

Glomerella leaf spot (GLS), a fungal disease caused by Colletotrichum fructicola, severely affects apple (Malus domestica) quality and yield. In this study, we found that the transcription factor MdWRKY71 was significantly induced by C. fructicola infection in the GLS-susceptible apple cultivar Royal Gala. The overexpression of MdWRKY71 in apple leaves resulted in increased susceptibility to C. fructicola, whereas RNA interference of MdWRKY71 in leaves showed the opposite phenotypes. These findings suggest that MdWRKY71 functions as a susceptibility factor for the apple-C. fructicola interacti

Antioxidant response and quality of sunburn Beurré D'Anjou pears (Pyrus communis L.).

Sunburn is a physiological fruit disorder induced by exposure to excessive solar radiation. This disorder leads to significant losses in the yield of marketable fruits by negatively affecting quality parameters such as maturity and external color of the fruits. The purpose of this work was to characterize the physiological and biochemical aspects related to oxidative metabolism in Beurré D'Anjou pear fruit with different sunburn levels. Fruits were collected and classified into three sunburn levels at harvest: no sunburn (S0), mild sunburn (S1), and moderate sunburn (S2). On sunburned area, th

Enhancing the efficacy of peracetic acid against Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria innocua on fresh apples using commercial acidic and alkaline cleaners.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a commonly used antimicrobial in brush-bed spray bar interventions during apple packing. Prior to sanitizer application on the brush-bed, specific fruit cleaners, such as Acidex Duo (AD), EpiClean (EC), Nature's Shield 220-ACL (NS 220), or Nature's Shield 330-ALK (NS 330), are used to remove of soil, debris, and natural wax from the surfaces of apples. This study evaluated the effectiveness of commonly used cleaners in the apple industry to improve the antimicrobial efficacy of PAA against Listeria monocytogenes on apple surfaces during brush-bed spray bar interventions

Aphid-infested beans divert ant attendance from the rosy apple aphid in apple-bean intercropping.

Ecological intensification of cropping systems aims at restoring multi-functionality while supporting current productivity levels. Intercropping is a form of ecological intensification involving ecological processes beneficial to farmers that do not take place in monocultures. Thus, it represents a practical approach to decrease the use of synthetic inputs such as insecticides in cultivated systems. Whereas insecticide reduction via intercropping-facilitated suppression of aphids is reported in literature, the majority of published studies focussed on herbaceous crops. Thus, the effect of inte

Determination of amygdalin in apple seeds, fresh apples and processed apple juices.

Cyanogenic glycosides are natural plant toxicants. Action by endogenous plant enzymes can release hydrogen cyanide causing potential toxicity issues for animals including humans. We have quantified amygdalin in seeds from different apple varieties, determined the effects of processing on the amygdalin content of apple juice and quantified amygdalin in commercially-available apple juices. Amygdalin contents of seeds from fifteen varieties of apples ranged from 1 mg g(-1) to 4 mg g(-1). The amygdalin content of commercially-available apple juice was low, ranging from 0.01 to 0.04 mg ml(-1) for p
