Trifid mandibular condyle is a rare anatomical malformation characterized by a division of the mandibular condylar head. The two articulating surfaces of the bifid condyle are divided by a groove that can be oriented mediolaterally or anteroposteriorly. This anomaly of the mandibular condyle has been described as a condition of unknown ætiology and uncertain pathogenesis. Some authors see it as a result of accidental trauma or forceps delivery, with the two heads occurring one behind the other in the sagittal plane. Reported cases are mostly unilateral and usually asymptomatic. The diagnosis i

The mandibular condyle consists of articular cartilage and subchondral bone that play an important role in bearing loads at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during static occlusion and dynamic mastication. The objective of the current study was to examine effects of sex and cartilage on 1) static and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) based dynamic energy storage and dissipation for the cartilage-subchondral bone construct of the human mandibular condyle, and 2) their correlations with the tissue mineral density and trabecular morphological parameters of subchondral bone. Cartilage-subchondral

BACKGROUND: The authors present six cases of mandibular condyle malformation. They also conducted a literature review of bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) to analyze the various hypotheses that have been made regarding the etiopathogenesis of this entity. Type of Studies Reviewed. The authors searched the PubMed database for all instances of BMC and similar anatomical alterations, and they included non-English-language published reports. The inclusion criterion was the presence of a multilobular mandibular condyle.
RESULTS: Mandibular condyle may manifest in different anatomical forms; bilobular

A prominent mandibular angle is considered to be unattractive in Asian countries because it gives the face a square and muscular appearance. Successful correction by angle ostectomy has been reported, but one of the serious complications of angle reduction ostectomy is fracture of the mandibular condyle. If the ostectomy line is misdirected vertically, the condyle may be fractured. The authors experienced two cases of condylar fracture during angle reduction. Case 1 was a pulled-out condylar fracture, where an L-shaped miniplate was then attached by external approach, and intermaxillary fixati

A case of vertical-split fracture of the right mandibular condyle and its sequelae is presented. The patient was a 16-year-old female being assessed for orthodontic treatment. Orthopantomograph and plain joint view radiographs showed a remodelled condyle which had suffered trauma 10 years previously. This type of fracture is unusual in nature but has not led to any secondary lack of growth, restriction of movement or facial asymmetry.

Transport distraction osteogenesis was used to reconstruct the articulation of the temporomandibular joint in two patients. Patient 1 underwent a gap arthroplasty for release of a bony ankylosis. Patient 2 had degenerative joint disease after tumor resection. Both patients had painful, limited mouth opening and facial asymmetry as a result of condylar shortening. A reverse-L osteotomy was performed from the sigmoid notch to the posterior border of the mandible. An external transport distraction device was applied, and the segment was advanced superiorly, 1.0 mm per day, until contact was made

A case of supero-lateral dislocation of the mandibular condyle into the temporal fossa is reported. The condyle was concurrently fractured antero-posteriorly forming a bifid mandibular condyle. The previously reported cases of supero-lateral dislocations into the temporal fossa are discussed and the literature of bifid condyle is reviewed.

A rare case of osteocartilaginous exostosis, also called osteochondroma, is described. The resection of the tumor through an extra-oral incision is the treatment of choice. The follow-up covers a period of 4 years. No relapse was observed and postoperatively the function of the temporomandibular joint was practically normal.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in endochondral development-related genes and mandibular condyle shape, size, volume, and symmetry traits. Cone-beam Computed Tomographies and genomic DNA from 118 individuals were evaluated (age range: 15-66 years). Data from twelve 3D landmarks on mandibular condyles were submitted to morphometric analyses including Procrustes fit, principal component analysis, and estimation of centroid sizes and fluctuating asymmetry scores. Condylar volumes were additionally measured. Seven SNPs across BMP2, BMP4,

This narrative review evaluates the literature on the management of mandibular condyle fractures in growing patients. It aims to illustrate some fundamental biological principles and to offer a series of considerations applicable to clinical practice. The discussion is based on 116 papers published in PubMed and two relevant textbooks. Condylar fractures may be overlooked, especially in pre-scholar children, where compliance is usually reduced. However, these injuries can have disabling sequelae such as ankyloses, facial deformities, malocclusion, and chronic pain in some patients if not diagn

BACKGROUND/AIM: The condylar fracture is among the most frequent facial fractures. Despite all the published studies, its treatment remains controversial. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the epidemiology and complications of mandibular condyle fractures managed by surgical and conservative treatments, over a period of twenty years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The files of 262 patients with 318 condyle fractures were included in this study. One hundred and seven patients had conservative management, and 155 had surgical management for the condylar fractures. The outcomes were ass

Dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) represents 3% of all reported dislocated joints. Traditionally, dislocation of the TMJ occurs when the mandibular condyle is displaced anteriorly beyond the articular eminence. Traumatic dislocation of the condyle into the middle cranial fossa is well defined in the literature, but posterior dislocation without fracture is rarely described. This report documents a case of young male with posterior dislocation of the intact mandibular condyle after facial trauma. The clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment are discussed, and a critical review

Practical aspects of treatment of mandibular condyle fractures are discussed. After a brief review of therapeutic measures previously applied, the different treatment modalities available for condylar fractures are discussed, indications being reviewed as a function of the clinical types of fracture. The majority of these fractures respond to effectively conducted supervised functional therapy, which appears to reduce sequelae in a significant manner.

Fractal analysis (FA) is a mathematical method used to evaluate irregular and complex shapes. The numerical result obtained from FA is called fractal dimension (FD). FA can detect subtle bone changes in diseases that affect bone microstructures such as temporomandibular disorder (TMD), even when these changes are not visible on radiographs. It provides objective results that can improve clinical diagnosis without creating extra burden for patients. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between FD values and both the severity of TMD and degenerative changes in temporomandibular joints (

PURPOSE: The management of fractures of the condyle of the mandible has been a topic of debate and still no consensus exists in the literature about the most appropriate approach. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the modified Blair approach for the open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular condyle fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 18 patients with 20 mandibular condyle fractures from 2014 to 2020. All patients were treated surgically using the modified Blair approach. Postoperative occlusion status and mouth opening were
