[Massive osteolysis. Report of a case involving the mandible].

The case of a young man aged 18 years, attending to the Outpatient Service, Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital, Santa Clara, because of pathologic fracture in the anterior region of the jaw and history of hospitalization by pain and inflammation of mandibular gingiva with mobility of anterior teeth causing multiple extractions. The physical examination showed facial asymmetry by loss of normal chin configuration. Within investigations performed we had to rest on clinics, radiographical studies and anatomopathologic results. We think that the publication of this paper helps to enrich the s

[Intramandibular salivary inclusions and ectopia (author's transl)].

Intramandibular salivary inclusions and ectopia concern the main salivary glands. The most common takes the form of a regular well-defined lacunar appearance situated at the mandibular angle or molar region. This asymptomatic inclusions is in fact only the imprint of a lobule of the sub-mandibular gland on the mandible. More rarely, the parotid gland and sublingual gland may also be responsible for a lacunar radiological appearance in the mandible. By contrast, a few ectopic glandular lobules of the sublingual may be completely induced at the site of the mandibular symphsis. Salivary inclusion

Total mandible and bilateral TMJ reconstruction combining a customized jaw implant with a free fibular flap: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The need for whole mandibular bone reconstruction and bilateral joint replacement is fortunately rare, but it is an extremely challenging topic in maxillofacial surgery, due to its functional implications. CAD-CAM techniques development has opened new broad horizons in the surgical planning of complex maxillofacial reconstructions, in terms of accuracy, predictability, and functional cosmetic results. The review of the literature has revealed a small number of scientific reports on total mandibulectomy including the condyles, with only eleven cases from 1980. Most of the works desc

Differences in the Size and Morphology of Masseter Muscle and Mandible Assessed Using Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angular hypertrophy and hemifacial microsomia involve deformities in the mandibular region, resulting in facial asymmetry that severely affects patients' appearance. This study evaluated the masseter muscle-mandibular correlation in patients with hemifacial microsomia and those with mandibular angular hypertrophy using three-dimensional CT and compared them with normal individuals. METHODS: This study included 310 participants. Craniofacial scans were performed using three-dimensional CT in all participants to obtain masseter muscle and mandibular size and morphology da

Reduced mandibular dimensions and asymmetry in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Pathogenetic factors.

The pathogenesis of reduced mandibular dimensions and asymmetry was studied in 103 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Abnormalities of the temporomandibular joint were intimately related to mandibular growth disturbances. Unilateral joint abnormality resulted in jaw asymmetry and underdevelopment on the affected side. Duration of disease and of corticosteroid therapy, age at disease onset, and age when the data were recorded were correlated with the size of the mandible. Our findings did not support a hypothesis of cervical spine involvement as an etiologic factor of reduced mandibul

Determination of mandibular morphology in a TURKISH population with Down syndrome using panoramic radiography.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is by far the most common known chromosomal disorder. Some characteristic features of DS are generalised growth deficiency, craniofacial abnormalities such as mandibular prognathism and underdevelopment of the midfacial region, dental abnormalities such as taurodontism and hypodontia. Individuals with DS have an increased prevalence of periodontal disease compared with age-matched control patients. The aim of the present study is to determine the morphologic features of the mandible among individuals with DS. METHODS: Thirty-four DS patients and thirty four age-

Osteosarcoma of the mandible: A case with a clinical appearance similar to benign lesions.

A 34-year-old woman with complaints of mandibular swelling that started 4 months earlier was referred to the Oral Diseases Department. Based on the clinical and radiographic appearance, the primary diagnosis was an intraosseous reactive lesion. However, the result of histopathology indicated osteosarcoma.

Mandibular biomechanics after marginal resection: Correspondences of simulated volumetric strain and skeletal resorption.

Serious mandibular diseases such as tumor or osteonecrosis often require segmental or marginal mandibulectomy, the latter with improved outcome thanks to preserved mandibular continuity. Nevertheless, gradual osteolytic and/or osteosclerotic skeletal changes frequently indicate repetitive resections. Based on the fundamental adaptivity of bone to mechanical loads, the question arose whether resection-related anatomical alterations trigger relevant pathological skeletal adaptations. For a clinical case after mandibular box resection due to progressive osteoradionecrosis (ORN), routine biomechan

Multiple idiopathic mandibular bone cysts in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Although the most common oral manifestation of osteogenesis imperfecta is dentinogenesis imperfecta, several authors have described jaw fractures and radiolucent bone lesions associated with this disease. We report a case of a 23-year-old white woman with osteogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta who developed multiple unilocular, bilateral, radiolucent lesions of the mandible 5 years after presenting with a condylar fracture. This is the first documentation by surgical and histopathologic examination that the radiolucent lesions in this particular case represent multiple idiopathi

[Bilateral chronic dislocation of the temporomandibular joints and Meige syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic dislocation of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is rare. It occurs when an acute dislocation is left untreated, in certain situations, including severe illness, neurologic or psychiatric diseases or prolonged oral intubation. CASE REPORT: A 79 years old woman, with Meige syndrome, suffered from bilateral dislocation of the TMJ for over 1 year. Surgical repositioning of the mandibular condyles and temporal bone eminectomy were performed. At the 18 postoperative months control, no recurrence has been noted. DISCUSSION: Treatment of chronic TMJ dislocations often require

Association between number of teeth present and mandibular cortical erosion in Japanese men and women aged 40 years and older: A cross-sectional study.

Mandibular cortical erosion detected on dental panoramic radiographs is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis in older adults. Additionally, many reports have demonstrated an association between decreased number of teeth present and osteoporosis. However, whether mandibular cortical erosion is associated with a decreased number of teeth remains unclear. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to clarify the association between mandibular cortical erosion and number of teeth present in Japanese men and women aged 40 years and older. Among patients who visited our university hospital

Multiple supernumerary teeth in the maxillary canine and mandibular premolar regions: a case in the postpermanent dentition.

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth is an extra tooth above the normal number, of which approximately 90% occur in the premaxillary region and show rudimentary forms of crown morphology. Most cases occur singly, with bilateral occurrence in the maxillary canine regions very rare in children with no other associated diseases or syndromes. CASE REPORT: A case of a 14-year-old boy with bilateral supernumerary teeth with normal crown shapes in both the maxillary canine and mandibular premolar regions. The supernumerary teeth in the maxilla were diagnosed at 12.2 years of age and in the mandible at

Management of the dentoalveolar effects of tongue hypertrophy in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A pilot study.

Subjects affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) develop severe malocclusions with the progression of the disease, due to changes in orofacial musculature and function, including tongue hypertrophy. We aimed to evaluate the benefits of maintaining mandibular interarch width with the help of a simple fixed orthodontic appliance. Three adolescent DMD boys were selected consecutively to receive a passive rigid mandibular lingual arch, and followed for 4-5 years. An untreated age-matched control group was chosen and followed for a similar period. Study casts were obtained at baseline and aft

Mandibular deviation and canted maxillary occlusal plane treated with miniscrews and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy: functional and morphologic changes.

Conventionally, the combination of mandibular and maxillary osteotomy is used to correct both mandibular deviation and maxillary canted occlusal plane. This case report describes functional and morphologic changes after an alternative treatment with miniscrew anchorage instead of maxillary osteotomy. A boy, aged 16 years 5 months, had temporomandibular joint disease symptoms, facial asymmetry with mandibular deviation, and a maxillary canted occlusal plane. The maxillary molars on the right side were extruded 3 mm compared with those on the left side. In addition, there were functional problem

Primary osteomyelitis of the mandibular condyle--a rare case.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory process involving cortical and cancellous bone. In the maxillofacial region, the mandible is the most frequently affected bone. In the vast majority, a bacterial focus can be identified as the origin of the disease. Chronic progress of the disease may lead to destruction of mandibular bony structures, resulting in mild or severe loss of function if no adequate treatment is applied. In some cases, the etiology of osteomyelitis remains unclear. Review of literature revealed two cases of necrosis of the mandibular condyle caused by primary osteomyelitis. We report

Treatment of a case of bilateral long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation indirectly associated with COVID-19 using eminectomy and mandibular traction.

INTRODUCTION: Wearing a mask is beneficial in limiting the spread of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). However, identification of oral diseases is challenging when the lower part of the face is covered with a mask. Here, we report a case of long-standing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation that was detected late owing to the use of a mask in a patient with intellectual disability. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old man complaining of difficulty in closing his mouth for a few months was referred to our hospital. Panoramic radiography revealed bilateral dislocation of the mandibular c
