UNLABELLED: Emergency airway management in children is generally considered to be challenging, and endotracheal intubation requires a high level of personal skills and experience. Immobilization of the cervical spine is indicated in all patients with the risk of any cervical spine injury but significantly aggravates endotracheal intubation. The best airway device in this setting has not been established yet, although the use of videolaryngoscopes is generally promising. Seventy-five moderately experienced paramedics of the Emergency Medical Service of Poland performed endotracheal intubations

Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) promotes pterygium and cataract development in the human eye. When outdoors, people are subject to varying ocular UVR exposure intensity depending on time of day and orientation to the sun. To assess this variability, a manikin eye was exposed to solar UVR at 12 rotation angles relative to the sun with a solar elevation angle (SEA) ranging from 24.6° to 88.2°. At rotation angles of 0°, 30°, and 330°, the diurnal variation of ocular UVR exposure intensity showed a bimodal distribution that peaked at a SEA of about 40°, which was 3 to 4 hr both before and after

Background Critically ill cardiac patients may decompensate suddenly owing to arrhythmias and worsening haemodynamics, often necessitating emergent endotracheal intubation. Training in airway management is usually neglected for residents in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). There is an unmet need to train cardiology residents in the swift management of airways in the acute setting of a cardiac arrest. Methods In this manikin-based cross-over study, we compared King's vision channelled (KVC) and non-channelled video laryngoscopes (King's vision [KV]) with Macintosh direct laryngoscopes (DL

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation is an important emergency procedure, especially in critical care settings. Capnography-guided intubation (CGI) is a technology that may enhance procedural efficiency. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of CGI with conventional intubation (CI) using a manikin simulation.
METHODS: A case-crossover manikin simulation study was conducted with three clinical scenarios: normal airway, cervical immobilization, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A CO2-exhalation simulation manikin was developed for this purpose. Participants were randomly assigned to per

Loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are used in healthcare settings, although barriers to routine, everyday usage remain, including usability concerns and potential interference with work activities. Loose-fitting PAPRs are approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and must meet minimum performance requirements, including a minimum airflow requirement of 170 L/min. One course of action to address usability concerns is to allow for the use of PAPRs designed with reduced airflow rates. The primary objective of this study was to assess the e

AIM: Early basic life support is crucial to enhance survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest but rates remain low, especially in households. High-risk groups' training has been advocated, but the optimal method is unclear. The CArdiac REhabilitation and BAsic life Support (CAREBAS) project aims to compare the effectiveness of two basic life support educational strategies implemented in a cardiac rehabilitation program.
METHODS: A community intervention study including consecutive patients enrolled on an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program after acute coronary syndrome or revascu

The objective of this randomized controlled manikin trial was to examine tidal volume (VT) delivery and ventilation rate during mask positive pressure ventilation (PPV) with five different devices, including a volume-controlled prototype Next Step™ device for neonatal resuscitation. We hypothesized that VT and rate would be closest to target with the Next Step™. Twenty-five Neonatal Resuscitation Program providers provided mask PPV to a newborn manikin (simulated weight 1 kg) in a randomized order with a self-inflating bag (SIB), a disposable T-piece, a non-disposable T-piece, a stand-alone re

OBJECTIVE: Airway management in patients with suspected cervical spine injury is classified as a "difficult airway." The best device for managing difficult airways is not known. Therefore, we conducted an intubation study simulating patients with cervical spine injury using three devices: a conventional Macintosh laryngoscope, a video laryngoscope (GlideScope), and a fiberoptic bronchoscope (MAF-TM). Success rates, intubation time, and complication rates were compared.
METHODS: Nine physician experts in airway management participated in this study. Cervical immobilization was used to simulate

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown that there may be an interaction between duty cycle and other factors related to the quality of chest compression. Duty cycle represents the fraction of compression phase. We aimed to investigate the effect of shorter compression phase on average chest compression depth during metronome-guided cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
METHODS: Senior medical students performed 12 sets of chest compressions following the guiding sounds, with three down-stroke patterns (normal, fast and very fast) and four rates (80, 100, 120 and 140 compressions/min) in random sequen

BACKGROUND: The Airway Scope (AWS) (Pentax-AWS, Hoya Corp., Tokyo, Japan) and the Airtraq (ATQ) (Prodol, Vizcaya, Spain) have similarities in the novel structures of their blades. In this study, we evaluated the ease of use of the AWS and ATQ compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope (ML) by inexperienced personnel in a simulated manikin difficult airway.
METHODS: Twenty-four fifth-year medical students with no previous experience in tracheal intubation participated in this study. We used an advanced patient simulator (SimMan(R), Laerdal Medical, Stavanger, Norway) to simulate difficult airway

PURPOSE: Oral mucosal biopsy and submucosal injection are essential clinical skills for dental students, yet traditional training relies on extraoral skin models that fail to replicate the texture of oral mucosa and the confined intraoral working space. This study aimed to develop a manikin-compatible buccal mucosal lesion simulator to address these limitations and evaluate its effectiveness in preclinical training.
METHODS: An intraoral simulator was designed to fit a dental manikin head, featuring realistic mucosal texture and anatomical constraints of the buccal region. Quantitative scorin

BACKGROUND: Although fiberoptic-guided endotracheal intubation using a supraglottic airway device (SAD) is a good alternative for the management of difficult airways, its learning curve for residents has not been evaluated in pediatric patients. We aimed to train residents using a pediatric manikin and obtain learning curves to evaluate the efficiency of the training.
METHODS: We conducted a single-armed prospective study with anesthesiology residents. Plain endotracheal tube (ETT) intubation guided by a fiberoptic bronchoscope through Ambu® AuraGainTM was demonstrated in a pediatric manikin

BACKGROUND: Manikins are widely used in airway management training; however, simulation of realism and interpatient variability remains a challenge. We investigated whether cadavers embalmed with the novel Fix for Life (F4L) embalmment method are a suitable and realistic model for teaching 3 basic airway skills: facemask ventilation, tracheal intubation, and laryngeal mask insertion compared to a manikin (SimMan 3G) and formalin-fixed cadavers.
METHODS: Thirty anesthesiologists and experienced residents ("operators") were instructed to perform the 3 airway techniques in 10 F4L, 10 formalin-fi
