Marijuana use in Pregnant Women with Disabilities in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: While perinatal marijuana use is increasing, limited research exists related to its use during pregnancy among vulnerable subpopulations of women with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to assess marijuana use in pregnant U.S. women with disabilities. METHODS: The analytic sample using 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data included 3657 pregnant women. Descriptive statistics were performed and adjusted logistic regression models estimated the size and direction of the association between the type of disability and marijuana use. RESULTS: Approximat

Marijuana use and DNA methylation-based biological age in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana is the third most commonly used drug in the USA and efforts to legalize it for medical and recreational use are growing. Despite the increase in use, marijuana's effect on aging remains understudied and understanding the effects of marijuana on molecular aging may provide novel insights into the role of marijuana in the aging process. We therefore sought to investigate the association between cumulative and recent use of marijuana with epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) as estimated from blood DNA methylation. RESULTS: A random subset of participants from The Coronary Art

Vanishing lung syndrome: a consequence of mixed tobacco and marijuana use.

Idiopathic giant bullous emphysema or vanishing lung syndrome (VLS) is a rare, chronic radiological diagnosis characterised by giant emphysematous bullae located primarily in the upper lobes of the lungs. This highly morbid phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease leads to severe progressive dyspnoea and significant disability. Here, we describe a 48-year-old man with a history significant for long-term tobacco and cannabis smoking, who is found to have VLS. We present a review of recent findings on the association between VLS and the additive effect of marijuana and tobacco.

Marijuana use in opioid exposed pregnancy increases risk of preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of opioid use disorder has increased across the United States, but the rural population of Appalachia has been disproportionately impacted. Concurrently, the slow, but steady progress in the legalization of marijuana may be affecting perception of marijuana use in pregnancy. However, marijuana use in pregnancy has been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Concomitant use of opioids and marijuana in pregnancy has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the association between confirmed marijuana use in late pregnancy and pre

Demand curve analysis of marijuana use among persons living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Despite medicalization and legalization of marijuana use, factors influencing demand for marijuana among persons living with HIV (PLWH) are incompletely understood. This knowledge gap undermines effective clinical management and policies. This study used demand curve simulation methods to address these issues. METHODS: Marijuana-using PLWH (N = 119) completed experimental tasks to simulate amount of marijuana purchasing/use across different costs (money or time), and likelihood of reselling marijuana or marijuana therapeutic-use registration card in relation to profits. Committee Opinion Summary NO. 722: Marijuana Use During Pregnancy and Lactation.

Cannabis sativa (marijuana) is the illicit drug most commonly used during pregnancy. The self-reported prevalence of marijuana use during pregnancy ranges from 2% to 5% in most studies. A growing number of states are legalizing marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes, and its use by pregnant women could increase even further as a result. Because of concerns regarding impaired neurodevelopment, as well as maternal and fetal exposure to the adverse effects of smoking, women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should be encouraged to discontinue marijuana use. Effects of marijuana use on impulsivity and hostility in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is increasingly prevalent among young adults. While research has found adverse effects associated with marijuana use within experimentally controlled laboratory settings, it is unclear how recreational marijuana use affects day-to-day experiences in users. The present study sought to examine the effects of marijuana use on within-person changes in impulsivity and interpersonal hostility in daily life using smartphone administered assessments. METHODS: Forty-three participants with no substance dependence reported on their alcohol consumption, tobacco use, recreationa

From counselor skill to decreased marijuana use: does change talk matter?

Client language about change, or change talk, is hypothesized to mediate the relationship between counselor fidelity in motivational interviewing (MI) and drug use outcomes. To investigate this causal chain, this study used data from an MI booster delivered to alternative high school students immediately after a universal classroom-based drug abuse prevention program. One hundred and seventy audio-recorded MI sessions about substance use were coded using the motivational interviewing skill code 2.5. Structural equation modeling showed that percentage of change talk on the part of the client me

Poly-drug and marijuana use among adults who primarily used methamphetamine.

This study examines health and legal problems associated with use of commonly reported substances and combinations of substances in a sample of adults with long histories of methamphetamine (meth) use. Data are from a 2009-11 eight-year follow-up interview in an intensive natural history study (N = 373). Respondents who had not used illicit substances in the year preceding the follow-up interview (38%) were compared to users of marijuana-only (16%), meth-only (7%), and poly-drug users who used meth + marijuana but not heroin or cocaine (19%), and poly-drug users who used heroin and/or cocaine

Immediate antecedents of marijuana use: an analysis from ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Marijuana remains the most commonly used illicit substance. Marijuana craving, anxiety, and peer marijuana use are thought to play important roles in the etiology and maintenance of marijuana use. The present study aimed to identify patterns between marijuana use and these affective and situational risk factors in the natural environment. METHODS: The sample consisted of 49 current marijuana users (38.8% female), 63.2% of whom evinced a current cannabis use disorder. Ecological momentary assessment was used to collect multiple daily ratings of marijuana craving, sta

Coronary no-flow and ventricular tachycardia associated with habitual marijuana use.

A 34-year-old man reported heart fluttering and near syncope a few hours after marijuana smoking. In the emergency department, he was found to have a right bundle-branch-type ventricular tachycardia. The patient underwent a successful electric cardioversion. Coronary angiography showed no pericardial artery stenosis yet very slow coronary blood flow. Clinical tachycardia was also inducible in the electrophysiologic laboratory. After verapamil therapy and cessation of marijuana, his coronary flow normalized and ventricular tachycardia was no longer inducible in the electrophysiologic laboratory

Marijuana use does not spuriously elevate serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels.

Marijuana use has been reported to spuriously elevate immunoreactive human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the serum of patients with testicular germ cell tumors. To reinvestigate this finding, we measured serum HCG and delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC) levels in 16 men known or suspected to be marijuana users. Eight of the serum samples had measurable levels of delta 9-THC, while eight did not. None contained immunoreactive HCG. The addition of delta 9-THC directly to pooled male serum had no effect on the HCG radioimmunoassay. These results indicate that marijuana does not artificia

Daily Motives for Alcohol and Marijuana Use as Predictors of Simultaneous Use Among Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Research on substance use motives typically examines each substance separately. However, simultaneous alcohol and marijuana (SAM) use-that is, using alcohol and marijuana at the same time so that their effects overlap-is common among young adults. This study examines day-to-day fluctuations in motives for using alcohol and/ or marijuana among young adult substance users as predictors of alcohol, marijuana, and SAM use across days. METHOD: Data were from a community sample of young adults who reported SAM use in the past month (analytic sample: N = 399, mean [SD] age = 21.63 [2.17];

The impact of prenatal marijuana and cocaine use on the infant and child.

The prevalence of cocaine use by pregnant women has been estimated by various researchers to range from 8-17%. Women who use cocaine during pregnancy are usually older and black and use more of other drugs. The effects of prenatal cocaine use on a variety of outcomes have not been substantiated. For each outcome discussed, there are as many reports of no effects as there are reports of detrimental effects. The studies that indicate that there are no effects of exposure are generally more sound methodologically. It is also possible that there are additional investigations of prenatal cocaine us
