Social disruption after cancer: longitudinal changes in marital status, residence, and income among over 450,000 cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: The impact of cancer extends beyond clinical outcomes, often disrupting interpersonal relationships and living situations. Although these social factors are important for survivorship, little is known about how marital status, residential urbanicity, and income change over time for cancer patients. METHODS: Using SEER 17, we obtained data from 457,058 adults diagnosed with multiple primary cancers from 2000 to 2021 and evaluated changes in marital status, urbanicity, and household income between the first and last recorded diagnoses. Analyses were stratified by follow-up interval

Parent-Child Disconnectedness and Older European Adults' Mental Health: Do Patterns Differ by Marital Status and Gender?

OBJECTIVES: Disconnectedness from one's adult child(ren) can undermine older adults' well-being. However, the psychological consequences of disconnectedness may differ across marital contexts and by gender. Drawing on stress and normative violation frameworks, we examine the association between parent-child disconnectedness and European older adults' depressive symptoms, and the extent to which these patterns differ by marital status (married, remarried, cohabiting, divorced, widowed, and never married) and gender. METHODS: We used pooled data from 8 waves (2004-2022) of the Survey of Health

Marital status and risk of dementia over 18 years: Surprising findings from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center.

INTRODUCTION: Marital status is a potential risk/protective factor for adverse health outcomes. This study tested whether marital status was associated with dementia risk in older adults. METHODS: Participants (N = 24,107; Meanage = 71.79) were from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. Cox regressions tested the association between baseline marital status and clinically ascertained dementia over up to 18 years of follow-up. RESULTS: Compared to married participants, widowed (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.73, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.67-0.79), divorced (HR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.59-0

Female genital mutilation and sexual behaviour by marital status among a nationally representative sample of Nigerian women.

BACKGROUND: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is believed to have a negative effect on sexual and reproductive health but the evidence from nationally representative sample in high-burdened countries like Nigeria is scarce. This study explored the association between FGM and sexual behaviour in a nationally representative sample of Nigerian women. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted using the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2013 and 2018 among women aged 15-49 years. The descriptive summaries of respondent characteristics by marital status were presented using freque

Workday Sitting Time and Marital Status: Novel Pretreatment Predictors of Weight Loss in Overweight and Obese Men.

The evidence base for weight loss programs in men is limited. Gaining a greater understanding of which personal characteristics and pretreatment behaviors predict weight loss and attrition in male-only studies would be useful to inform the development of future interventions for men. In December 2010, 159 overweight/obese men (mean age = 47.5 years; body mass index = 32.7 kg/m2) from the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, participated in a randomized controlled trial testing the effectiveness of two versions of a 3-month gender-targeted weight loss program. In the current analyses, s

Marital status and cohabitation during pregnancy: relationship with social conditions, antenatal care and pregnancy outcome in France.

A survey of a representative sample of 5508 births in France in 1981 permitted the study of social characteristics of pregnant women, the medical care they received during their pregnancy and their pregnancy outcome, as a function of their marital status and whether or not they lived with the father of the child. Unmarried women living with the father (n = 412) like unmarried women living alone (n = 171), were more often younger, having their first baby and had a lower educational level than did married women living with the father (n = 4590). However, among the unmarried women, those living a

The educational, vocational, and marital status of growth hormone-deficient adults treated with growth hormone during childhood.

The goal of growth hormone therapy in childhood is to increase stature, thereby facilitating normal psychosocial development. To determine the social outcome of patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), we interviewed 116 adults with GHD across Canada, including 86 men and 30 women 18 to 38 years of age who were treated with growth hormone during childhood. The education of the 96 patients who had completed their formal education was similar to their siblings and to the general population. Of the patients in the labor force, 35.4% were unemployed; the unemployment rates for those patients

Moral Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in War: The Effect of Marital Status and Previous Genocidal Trauma.

This study examines the intergenerational transfer of the genocidal trauma of the Holodomor (1932-33) and explores how marital status moderates its impact on moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Moral injury, distinct from PTSD, arises from the violation of moral beliefs, leading to emotional distress characterised by guilt, shame, anger, disgust and a sense of betrayal. While previous research predominantly focused on direct survivors of genocide, this study expands the understanding of moral injury to their descendants, part

Marital and living status and biological ageing trajectories: a longitudinal cohort study with a 20-year follow-up.

Biomarkers of ageing (BA) can predict health risks beyond chronological age, but little is known about how marital/living status affects longitudinal changes in BA. We examined the association between marital/living status and BA over time using the-Swedish-Adoption/Twin-Study-of-Aging (SATSA) cohort. Four BAs were analyzed: telomere length (TL) (638 individuals; 1603 measurements), DNAmAge (535 individuals; 1392 measurements), cognition (823 individuals; 3218 measurements), and frailty index (FI) (1828 individuals; 9502 measurements). Individuals were born between 1900 and 1948, and data on m

Psychological symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis and the role of marital status: results from a retrospective single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Married people have, on average, better mental health than no married people. Psychological symptoms as anxiety and depression occur frequently in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), increasing the severity of neurologic disability. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the relationship between functional disability and psychological symptoms differentiating by marital status. METHODS: In this study 150 MS outpatients without a history of psychological disorders were selected from the hospital database. The outpatient procedure for all patients includes the adm

Rising educational gradients in mortality among U.S. whites: What are the roles of marital status and educational homogamy?

The educational gradient in U.S. mortality has been rising among non-Hispanic whites. A common intuition sees the growing educational divide in marital status and increases in educational homogamy as potential explanations. To empirically assess this possibility, we analyze mortality from 1986 to 2015 using the National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality Files (562,584 persons; 204,756 deaths). At the individual level, being unmarried and spouse's lower educational attainment are associated with higher mortality. Counterfactual analyses, however, reveal that the growing educational divid

Association of marital status and years of schooling with perinatal outcome: the influence of pre-natal care as an intermediate variable.

The association between mother's education and perinatal mortality, and between marital status and proportion of preterm deliveries was analyzed using data from 20,000 women and newborns delivered at the Hospital Barros Luco-Trudeau in Santiago, Chile. A highly significant correlation was found, but after being controlled by pre-natal care, that association disappeared for those mothers with good pre-natal care, remaining only as a part of the association for women who did not attend the pre-natal clinics or did not follow minimal standards of care. The definition used for "good pre-natal care

Association of marital and parental status with stress, support, adherence, and quality of life among breast cancer women.

BACKGROUNDS: Breast cancer presents multifaceted challenges that extend beyond physical illness, profoundly influencing patients' psychological well-being, treatment adherence, and social relationships. Marital and parental status further affect these experiences by influencing coping capacity, emotional stability, and perceived support systems. This study aimed to assess how marital and parental status influence the lives of women with breast cancer, particularly their psychological well-being, support, treatment adherence, and overall quality of life (QoL). The effects of marital status, partner drinking, and sex differences on the likelihood of remission from alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Marriage is associated with improved health and alcohol outcomes, yet prior research has often combined diverse non-marital relationships, obscuring whether benefits are unique to marriage or a result of strong interpersonal relationships. This study examines whether marriage, compared to cohabitation, exclusive dating, or being single, is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) remission and whether this varies by sex and partner drinking. METHOD: Participants were adults from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism Lifespan Study (n = 1494; 54.4% female) who met
