Chronic mandibular osteomyelitis associated with a novel probable Kocuria sp in a sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps).

Dental disease in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) is understudied, with only limited clinical and pathological data available. An approximately 7-year-old female sugar glider presented to its primary care veterinarian for a decline in food intake, rapid weight loss and a mass involving the rostral mandible. At necropsy, the mandibular mass effaced most of the rostral mandible and adjacent musculature. Histologically, the mandible was disrupted by nodular infiltrates of variably degenerate neutrophils and macrophages encased in granulomatous inflammation and fibrous connective tissue. Within

A new cue for torpor induction: charcoal, ash and smoke.

Recent work has shown that the use of torpor for energy conservation increases after forest fires in heterothermic mammals, probably in response to the reduction of food. However, the specific environmental cues for this increased torpor expression remain unknown. It is possible that smoke and the novel substrate of charcoal and ash act as signals for an impending period of starvation requiring torpor. We therefore tested the hypothesis that the combined cues of smoke, a charcoal/ash substrate and food shortage will enhance torpor expression in a small forest-dwelling marsupial, the yellow-foo

Integration, heterochrony, and adaptation in pedal digits of syndactylous marsupials.

BACKGROUND: Marsupial syndactyly is a curious morphology of the foot found in all species of diprotodontian and peramelemorph marsupials. It is traditionally defined as a condition in which digits II and III of the foot are bound by skin and are reduced. Past treatments of marsupial syndactyly have not considered the implications of this unique morphology for broader issues of digit development and evolution, and the ongoing debate regarding its phylogenetic meaning lacks a broad empirical basis. This study undertakes the first interdisciplinary characterisation of syndactyly, using variance/c

Use of helium-oxygen to examine the effect of cold acclimation on the summit metabolism of a marsupial, Dasyuroides byrnei.

To determine whether marsupial mammals increase their metabolic capabilities during cold acclimation, the metabolism of both warm and cold acclimated Dasyuroides byrnei was examined by exposure to cold in a helium-oxygen atmosphere. Mean values of heat production and conductance were significantly higher in a helium-oxygen atmosphere than in air. Body temperature did not change until metabolic capacity was exhausted. Both cold and warm acclimated groups could maintain a metabolic scope of 10-11 times the basal or standard level for this species. Such a metabolic scope is much higher than level

Keratoconjunctivitis of the koala, Phascolarctos cinereus, caused by Chlamydia psittaci.

Chlamydia psittaci was cultured from 29 of 35 koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) with keratoconjunctivitis. The disease progressed from acute to chronic stages over some months, with a known duration of at least 2 years. One recovered carrier was found. Up to 29% of koalas in some populations were clinically affected. A seasonal spread of infection was indicated by the high percentage of acutely affected cases found in summer. There was no evidence of susceptibility being related to age or sex. The sera of all chronically affected koalas had complement fixation test titres against chlamydial grou

The occurence of coxiellosis among rodents and shrews in the Tarai area of Uttar Praedesh.

Rodents and shrews were screened for serologic evidence of Coxiella burnetii. Attempts were made to isolate the organism from the spleen and liver. Seroreactors: total positive/total tested (% positive), in rats (Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus), ground shrews (Suncus murinus), bandicoots (Bandicota indica, B. bengalensis) and the house mouse (Mus musculus), respectively, were 13/105 (12.38), 6/42 (14.3), 2/15 (13.3) and 1/7 (14.3). Of the eight rickettsial isolants recovered including four from field and household rats, three from ground shrew and one from bandicoots, only three comprising one e

Identification of expressed endogenous retroviral element associated long terminal repeats in devil facial tumour cells.

The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) population has undergone a major decline in the wild owing to the epidemics of two transmissible cancers known as devil facial tumours (DFT1 and DFT2). A multipronged conservation strategy is in place, but a vaccine that prevents devils from developing devil facial tumour disease would be a major step towards recovering the wild devil population. Critical to an effective DFT vaccine are target antigens. Putative non-coding regions of genomes have been identified as potential tumour-specific antigens for human cancer. These non-coding regions include l

A molecular inventory of the faecal microbiomes of 23 marsupial species.

Despite the recent expansion of culture-independent analyses of animal faecal microbiomes, many lineages remain understudied. Marsupials represent one such group, where, despite their iconic status, direct sequencing-based analyses remain limited. Here, we present a metagenomic and metabolomic exploration of the faecal microbiomes of 23 Diprotodontia marsupials, producing a reference set of 3,868 prokaryotic and 12,142 viral metagenome-assembled genomes, the majority (>80 %) of which represent novel species. As with other animals, host phylogeny is the primary driver of microbiome composition,

Dynamic sperm proteome remodeling during epididymal maturation in a marsupial, Macropus giganteus†.

While assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are widely used in domestic animals, successful implementation of ARTs to conserve wildlife species remains challenging. In macropods, crucial aspects of fundamental reproductive biology, including changes induced by epididymal maturation, remain unknown, limiting the development of ARTs. In this context, we performed a proteomic analysis of spermatozoa from the caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis of Eastern Grey Kangaroos (n = 6) to profile changes over epididymal maturation. Samples prepared by filter-aided sample preparation digestion were ana

Pharmacokinetics of a topical application of moxidectin in bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus).

Sarcoptic mange is a debilitating disease that affects bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). One of the drugs currently used for treatment is moxidectin, as it has a relatively high efficacy against endo and ectoparasites and side effects are uncommon in domestic species, thus it is considered a relatively safe drug to use at the recommended doses. Developing further understanding of the pharmacokinetics of moxidectin will aid in developing treatment regimens for sarcoptic mange in wombats. Here we analyzed the pharmacokinetic parameters of using 100 ml of moxidectin (5 g/l) applied topically

Helminth community structure of the white-bellied woolly mouse opossum Marmosa constantiae Thomas, 1904 in Central-West Brazil.

Marmosa constantiae is a species of marsupial restricted to the central portion of South America. In Brazil, it occurs in the northwestern region including five states of the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal biomes. However, there is no study of the helminth fauna or helminth community structure for this marsupial. The aims of this study were to describe the species composition and to analyse the structure of the helminthic community of M. constantiae in an area of the Amazon Arc in Sinop, north of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Parasites were searched in 53 specimens of this marsupial, among

A model for the treatment of environmentally transmitted sarcoptic mange in bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus).

Some of the most important wildlife diseases involve environmental transmission, with disease control attempted via treatments that induce temporary pathogen resistance among hosts. However, theoretical explanations of such circumstances remain few. A mathematical model is proposed and investigated to analyse the dynamics and treatment of environmentally transmitted sarcoptic mange in a population of bare-nosed wombats. The wombat population is structured into four classes representing stages of infection, in a model that consists of five non-linear differential equations including the unattac

Chronic excess fluoride uptake contributes to degenerative joint disease (DJD): Evidence from six marsupial species.

One of the manifestations of chronic fluoride toxicosis in mammals is skeletal fluorosis, which can include lesions of degenerative joint disease (DJD). Although DJD lesions have been less commonly studied than bone or dental lesions in relation to the pathology and epidemiology of fluoride toxicosis, there have been multiple independent studies in various species that have concluded that there appears to be an effect. The mechanisms by which fluoride affects the joints are not clear, but our data provide evidence that chronic excess dietary fluoride intake contributes to DJD. Our study is the

Increasing generations in captivity is associated with increased vulnerability of Tasmanian devils to vehicle strike following release to the wild.

Captive breeding of threatened species, for release to the wild, is critical for conservation. This strategy, however, risks producing captive-raised animals with traits poorly suited to the wild. We describe the first study to characterise accumulated consequences of long-term captive breeding on behaviour, by following the release of Tasmanian devils to the wild. We test the impact of prolonged captive breeding on the probability that captive-raised animals are fatally struck by vehicles. Multiple generations of captive breeding increased the probability that individuals were fatally struck,

Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in wild rodents and marsupials from the Atlantic Forest, state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that infects a large spectrum of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Small rodents and marsupials play an important role in the epidemiology of T. gondii because they are sources of infection for domestic and feral cats. Serum samples from 151 rodents and 48 marsupials, captured in the Atlantic Forest, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil, were analyzed for the presence of T. gondii antibodies. Antibodies detected by the modified agglutination test (MAT ≥ 25) were found in 8.6% (13/151) of the rodents and 10.4% (5/48) of the marsupials, with titers
