OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiology, characteristics, response to initial treatment, and outcomes of Adult-Onset Still's disease (AOSD) in the Afro-Caribbean population of Martinique with free and easy access to specialised care.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study from 2004 to 2022 in the island of Martinique, French West-Indies which total population was 354 800 in 2021. Patients were identified from multiple sources including standardised databases. To be included, patients had to be residents of the island and fulfilled Yamaguchi and/or Fautrel's criteria for AOSD, or have a

Prostate, breast, stomach, colon-rectum, lung, and hematologic cancers represent a regional public health burden among older adults in the Caribbean. We described 15-year trends in cancer incidence and mortality among older adults in Martinique. We conducted a population-based cohort study (2008-2022) from the population-based cancer registry of Martinique. Age-Standardized Incidence and Mortality Rates (ASIR and ASMR) were estimated using the Segi/Doll world standard population and Annual Average Percent Change (AAPC) with 95% confidence interval in patients ≥ 65 years, by tumor site and sex.

BACKGROUND: Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) has been discovered in 1980 and has been linked to tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in 1985 in Martinique. There is no data on HAM/TSP incidence trends. We report, in the present work, the temporal trends incidence of HAM/TSP in Martinique over 25 years.
METHODS: Martinique is a Caribbean French West Indies island deserved by a unique Neurology Department involved in HAM/TSP diagnosis and management. A registry has been set up since 1986 and patients diagnosed for a HAM/TSP were prospectively registered. Only patients with a definit

BACKGROUND: Tropomyosin has been described as cross-reacting allergen between mite, cockroach and shrimp.
METHODS: In 13 patients with asthma and/or rhinitis sensitized to mite and/or German cockroach and presenting urticaria, oral allergy syndrome or angio-edema upon eating shrimp and/or crab, we measured specific IgE to mite, cockroach, crab and shrimp tropomyosin.
RESULTS: Ten patients had specific IgE to tropomyosin from mite, 8 from shrimp, 6 from crab and 5 from cockroach. AST inhibition tests indicated that mite allergen is a primary sensitizer and is cross-reacting with shrimp, crab

A clinicopathologic study was conducted to assess the implication of HTLV-I infection, Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) infection, and P53 overexpression in the development, response to treatment, and evolution of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in Martinique, French West Indies. Two groups of patients, with 22 and 41 participants with B-cell and T-cell lymphoma, respectively, were analyzed. HTLV-I antibodies were detected in 24 (59%) patients with T-cell lymphoma of whom 19 (46%) fulfilled diagnostic criteria of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). By comparison with other T-cell lymphomas, pati

"Chiniy-tref" (CT) is a traditional preparation used in folk medicine in Martinique Island (French West Indies) that is nowadays mainly taken orally to prevent or act against any "manifestation of evil". CT is easily prepared at home by macerating larvae of the endemic swallowtail Battus polydamas (ssp.) cebriones (Dalman, 1823), sometimes accompanied by a leaf of its host-plant Aristolochia trilobata L., in commercial rum. We have previously reported the detection of nephrotoxic and carcinogenic aristolochic acids (AAs) I and II in CT, leading the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Martinique to

A serological survey was performed of 1788 cattle, goats and sheep on 13 islands in the Lesser Antilles. Sera were tested by microscopic agglutination (MAT) using a panel of 22 live antigens. Evidence of past exposure, at a titer of > or = 100, was found in 101 animals (5.6%). Antibodies were more common in cattle and goats (7.2% in each) than in sheep (1.7%). Seroprevalence was highest in cattle in Martinique (20%) and in goats in St. Vincent (23%). The predominant serogroups were Sejroe (largely confined to cattle in Martinique), Autumnalis, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa, and Cynopteri.

One hundred and twenty-seven Brahman cattle from several locations in Martinique (FWI), reared under different environmental conditions, were followed over three years and checked for clinical signs of dermatophilosis. To confirm that these animals had been in contact with the pathogen Dermatophilus congolensis, their sera were tested by ELISA. On the basis of this epidemiological study, 12 animals were classified as resistant (seropositive without clinical signs), belonging to herds in which the prevalence of the disease ranged from 25 to nearly 98%. Eighteen animals classified as highly susc

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever (YF) is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Symptoms range from mild fever to severe complications such as jaundice and haemorrhages, which can be fatal. Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean, has remained YF-free since 1908. However, the reintroduction of A. aegypti in the 1970s, the limited scope of mandatory vaccination-currently required only for international travellers to endemic areas-and increased connectivity to YF-endemic regions heighten its vulnerability. To inform local preparedness activities, we assessed the risk of

BACKGROUND: In the French West Indies, previous studies have reported findings on pesticide exposure and cancer incidence. A new exploratory geographical study, including a more sensitive soil contamination indicator, will provide more detailed information on the link between cancer incidence and organochlorine pesticide exposure. This study aims to investigate the association between incident cases of cancer and chlordecone soil contamination at an IRIS scale over the period 2006-2019 in Martinique.
METHODS: Data on the 18 most frequent cancer sites were collected from the Martinique Populat

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The epidemiological characteristics of hypertension and obesity in French overseas territories (FOTs) have never been compared.
METHODS: This cross-sectional survey included representative population-based samples of 602, 601, 620 and 605 men and women aged more than 15 years, respectively, from four FOTs of Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and French Polynesia. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure (BP) at least 140/90mmHg or the current use of antihypertensive treatment.
RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension was 29.2% in Guadeloupe, 17.9% in French Guia

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving pa

BACKGROUND: The French military personnel may be exposed to leptospirosis during their training or on duty on the field in continental France, and most of all, in intertropical areas in the French departments and in Africa. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of leptospirosis from epidemiological surveillance and cases data from 2004 to 2018, and to propose tools to assess leptospirosis risk prior to any mission or leisure activity.
METHOD: A retrospective epidemiological study on leptospirosis cases among French Armed Forces was conducted. More data were collected for 2 cluster

The mosquito-borne disease, Yellow fever (YF), has been largely controlled via mass delivery of an effective vaccine and mosquito control interventions. However, there are warning signs that YF is re-emerging in both Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. Imported from Africa in slave ships, YF was responsible for devastating outbreaks in the Caribbean. In Martinique, the last YF outbreak was reported in 1908 and the mosquito Aedes aegypti was incriminated as the main vector. We evaluated the vector competence of fifteen Ae. aegypti populations for five YFV genotypes (Bolivia, Ghana, Nigeria, S

Since two years our laboratory is involved in the sero-epidemiology of retroviruses in Martinique, French Guiana and Equatorial Africa. French West Indies is an endemic area for HTLV-I with 3 to 5% positivity in blood donors. Such a prevalence increases with age in the general population, reaching 30% after 60 years of age. Data are given here regarding hematological and neurological syndromes observed in Martinique and associated with HTLV-I. Furthermore, we recently discovered an association between HTLV-I and the neuro-myelopathy named endemic Tropical Spastic Paraparesis. Such an associati

Outbreak sequencing provides insight into the origin and evolutionary processes acting on emerging pathogens. Sequencing a historic multihost outbreak of Ralstonia spp. in Martinique shows the outbreak was caused by two lineages that diverged at separate times from mainland populations. One lineage (Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum I-18) was originally introduced from Asia to South America, where it became well established prior to its dissemination to Martinique, where it retains a signature of specialization on solanaceous hosts. The novel lineage first identified during the outbreak (Ralstonia

Martinique was accepted as an associate member by the Council of Ministers of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean State since February 2015. This membership constitutes a major asset in bringing Martiniquais closer to the other Caribbean populations and should play a key role as it relates to regional cooperation especially in the domain of healthcare. Martinique and several Caribbean countries share common health issues such as; dengue, chikungunya virus, Zika Virus leptospirosis, snakebite, severe cardiovascular diseases (CVD), HTLV-1, sickle cell diseases and so on. Prostate cancer incidence varies considerably across regions worldwide. In Martinique, the incidence reached 164, 5 per 100,000 person-years between 2008 and 2014, ranking among the highest globally. During the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnostic activities were severely disrupted, which may have impacted prostate cancer outcomes. This study aimed to compare incidence, characteristics, and survival of prostate cancer patients diagnosed in Martinique before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study included patients diagnosed with invasive prostate adenocarcinoma between January 1, 2015, and Decem
