Masked distress: The mediated effects of face masks on physical and emotional suffocation.

This study explores the effects of bodily states on emotions based on embodied cognition theories of conceptual metaphor and feelings-as-information theory. Specifically, it investigates how physical suffocation induced by mask-wearing affects perceptions of emotional suffocation related to one's romantic relationship and financial situation. In this quantitative online experiment, we employed a convenience sampling method through a crowdsourcing platform. Adult participants (N = 180, 25 years or older and involved in a romantic relationship) were randomly assigned to three conditions: wearing

Masking Influences: A Systematic Review of Placebo Control and Masking in Psychedelic Studies.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is becoming increasingly acknowledged as an effective therapeutic intervention for various psychiatric illnesses. However, the evaluation of masking success is rarely reported in trials. The objective of the present systematic review was to evaluate placebo-control and masking in studies exploring psychedelic-assisted therapy. Nine (k = 9) studies dating between January 2010 and March 2023 were retrieved using six databases, following strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results show that almost 78% of the studies had, at best, "poor" masking success. At th

Multimodal Masked Autoencoder Based on Adaptive Masking for Vitiligo Stage Classification.

Vitiligo, a prevalent skin condition characterized by depigmentation, presents challenges in staging due to its inherent complexity. Multimodal skin images can provide complementary information, and in this study, the integration of clinical images of vitiligo and those obtained under Wood's lamp is conducive to the classification of vitiligo stages. However, difficulties in annotating multimodal data and the scarcity of multimodal data limit the performance of deep learning models in related classification tasks. To address these issues, a Multimodal Masked Autoencoder (Multi-MAE) based on ad

Effect of surgical mask and N95 respirator mask use on cerebrovascular reactivity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Face masks are crucial parts of personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce the risk of respiratory infections. The COVID-19 outbreak has increased healthcare workers' use of face masks. This study aimed to evaluate changes in cerebrovascular response among healthcare workers using surgical and N95 respirator masks. METHODS: 90 healthcare workers: 30 wearing surgical masks, 30 wearing N95 respirators, and 30 without masks were included. After two-hour of face mask use, the baseline mean flow velocity (MFV) and the mean breath-holding index (BHI) of the bilateral midd

Masking-level differences in older adults: the effect of the level of the masking noise.

In Experiment 1, masking-level differences (MLDs) for a 500-Hz tone at five masker levels were obtained from younger and older adults. For both age groups, there were no reliable increases in MLD once the spectrum level of the masker exceeded 27 dB SPL. MLDs were larger for younger than for older adults over the range of masker levels tested. In Experiment 2, the levels of both the signal and the masker in one ear were attenuated by either 15 or 30 dB relative to their level in the other ear, which was fixed at a spectrum level of 47 dB SPL. MLDs for both age groups declined with increasing IA

The aging brain that doesn't fail: how neural resilience masks neurodegeneration.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease are usually framed as consequences of aging-related pathogenic processes, including impaired proteostasis with protein aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Yet, most individuals, even into advanced age, do not develop clinically significant neurodegenerative disease. This discrepancy suggests that the nervous system possesses robust and redundant protective mechanisms that maintain neural integrity despite cumulative molecular and cellular s

Exoshell-Assisted Fully Conformal Ultrasonic Facial Masks for Enhanced Transdermal Therapy.

Improving skin condition has attracted growing public interest, motivating the development of wearable transdermal drug delivery systems. Ultrasound-assisted delivery enhances skin permeability noninvasively, but existing wearable devices, even highly stretchable ones, fail to achieve complete conformal contact with the complex concave-convex topography of the human face, limiting full-area treatment. Here, we present an exoshell-assisted fully conformal ultrasonic facial mask (FCUFM) that mechanically guides stretchable electronics to achieve intimate contact across the full facial surface. T

Revealed masks: Facial mimicry after oxytocin administration in forensic psychopathic patients.

Facial mimicry serves as an evolutionarily rooted important interpersonal communication process that touches on the concepts of socialization and empathy. Facial electromyography (EMG) of the corrugator muscle and the zygomaticus muscle was recorded while male forensic psychopathic patients and controls watched morphed angry or happy facial expressions. We tested the hypothesis that psychopathic patients would show weaker short latency facial mimicry (that is, within 600 ms after stimulus onset) than controls. Exclusively in the group of 20 psychopathic patients, we tested in a placebo-control

Utilizing Carbon Dots Derived from Waste Face Masks for Pentachlorophenol Detection.

Pentachlorophenol is a very toxic chemical that is used as a pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, wood preservative, etc., and it should be monitored in terms of human health and environmental production. Another environmental problem is the increase in the use of facemasks, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides a value added chemicals to sustainability of recycling process. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from waste facemasks and investigated their fluorescence sensor performances. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra of the synthesized carbon dots were recorded i

Thiol-Reactive Arylsulfonate Masks for Phenolate Donors in Antiproliferative Iron Prochelators.

Tridentate thiosemicarbazones, among several families of iron chelators, have shown promising results in anticancer drug discovery because they target the increased need for iron that characterizes malignant cells. Prochelation strategies, in which the chelator is released under specific conditions, have the potential to avoid off-target metal binding (for instance, in the bloodstream) and minimize unwanted side effects. We report a prochelation approach that employs arylsulfonate esters to mask the phenolate donor of salicylaldehyde-based chelators. The new prochelators liberate a tridentate

Laryngeal Masks in Neonatal Resuscitation-A Narrative Review of Updates 2022.

Positive pressure ventilation (PPV) is crucial to neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation because respiratory failure precedes cardiac failure in newborns affected by perinatal asphyxia. Prolonged ineffective PPV could lead to a need for advanced resuscitation such as intubation, chest compression, and epinephrine. Every 30 s delay in initiation of PPV increased the risk of death or morbidity by 16%. The most effective interface for providing PPV in the early phases of resuscitation is still unclear. Laryngeal masks (LMs) are supraglottic airway devices that provide less invasive and relatively

Turbinate hypertrophy following COVID-19 infection masks choanal atresia in adult.

A 34-year-old female 4 weeks post COVID-19 infection was diagnosed with inferior turbinate hypertrophy and a deviated nasal septum. The patient underwent inferior turbinate bone resection and nasal septoplasty with minimal improvement in nasal obstruction. Upon reevaluation, unilateral choanal atresia was discovered. Subsequent repair of the choanal atresia resolved all complaints of nasal obstruction. This unique presentation of a missed diagnosis of choanal atresia contributes to the idea that a variety of conditions may precede and at times delay the discovery of choanal atresia in adults.

Photopolymerizable, Universal Antimicrobial Coating to Produce High-Performing, Multifunctional Face Masks.

COVID-19 poses a major threat to global health and socioeconomic structures, and the need for a highly effective, antimicrobial face mask has been considered a major challenge for protection against respiratory diseases. Here, we report the development of a universal, antiviral, and antibacterial material that can be dip-/spray-coated over conventional mask fabrics to exhibit antimicrobial activities. Our data shows that antimicrobial fabrics rapidly inactivated multiple types of viruses, i.e., human (alpha/beta) coronaviruses, the influenza virus, and bacteria, irrespective of their modes of

Experimental visualization of sneezing and efficacy of face masks and shields.

In the present work, we propose and demonstrate a simple experimental visualization to simulate sneezing by maintaining dynamic similarity to actual sneezing. A pulsed jet with Reynolds number Re = 30 000 is created using compressed air and a solenoid valve. Tracer particles are introduced in the flow to capture the emulated turbulent jet formed due to a sneeze. The visualization is accomplished using a camera and laser illumination. It is observed that a typical sneeze can travel up to 25 ft in ∼22 s in a quiescent environment. This highlights that the present widely accepted safe distance of
