Efficacy of botulinum toxin in masseter muscle hypertrophy for lower face contouring.

BACKGROUND: Masseter muscle hypertrophy (MMH) usually presents with cosmetic concerns as it may lead to widening of the lower face. Apart from the traditional surgical approaches, botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injection is a non-invasive treatment option available. There are no standard guidelines for this procedure. OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy of botulinumtoxin A in MMH for lower face contouring. METHODOLOGY: The Cochrane Library, PubMed/MEDLINE, Google-scholar, Science-Direct database, and ResearchGate from inception until September 2021 were searched using the keywords "botulinumtoxi

Masseter muscle defined sarcopenia and survival in head and neck cancer patients.

Sarcopenia is increasingly recognised as a poor prognostic factor in older patients undergoing cancer treatment. Recently, masseter muscle cross sectional area (MMCSA) has been shown to accurately identify sarcopenic patients. We aimed to apply this novel technique to a head and neck cohort to identify any potential relationship with survival. A retrospective review was undertaken of patients over 65 years, diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and treated with curative intent in our unit between October 2009 and October 2017. MMCSA was measured on staging CT scans using

Management of unilateral idiopathic masseter muscle hypertrophy with botulinum toxin type A.

Masseter hypertrophy (MH) is an uncommon disorder which can cause both aesthetic and functional problems. The most common aetiological factors associated with MH are habit of chewing gum, clenching and/or bruxism. The treatment of MH includes conservative management as well as surgical resection of the enlarged muscle and/or bone. Injection of botulinum toxin type A is a relatively new and minimally invasive method for management of masseter muscle hypertrophy, which offers many advantages over conventional surgical management. This paper reports a case of unilateral MH of unknown origin which

Influence of partial masseter muscle resection along with reduction of mandibular angle.

UNLABELLED: The mandibular angle plays an important role in determining the Asian human facial attractiveness. Currently, mandibular angle osteotomy is often reported as the correction of square face appearance due to its prominence. However, no previous study has documented the long-term outcome of partial masseter muscle resection along with reduction of mandibular angle. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to investigate the outcome and complications of partial masseter muscle resection along with reduction of mandibular angle in long-term follow-up. METHOD: One hundred fifty-one patients were subj

Oral commissure reconstruction with split masseter muscle transposition and cheek skin flap.

Satisfactory reconstruction of the cheek involving the oral commissure is always challenging. A 64-year-old male patient underwent full-thickness repair of a cheek defect involving the oral commissure following excision of squamous cell carcinoma. Reconstruction was performed with a cheek skin flap combined with split masseter muscle transposition. This method was found to be useful for reconstructing the oral commissure with good functional and aesthetic results.

Role of trigeminal ganglion satellite glial cells in masseter muscle pain hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: The underlying mechanism of masseter muscle pain hypersensitivity by sustained masseter muscle contraction (SMMC) is not well understood. This study aimed to examine whether the activation of satellite glial cells in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) contributes to masseter muscle pain hypersensitivity induced by SMMC. METHODS: Electrodes were placed on the masseter muscle fascia of rats to induce strong contractions, by daily electrical stimulation. Pain sensitivity in the masseter muscle was measured and the activation level of satellite glial cells in the TG was examined. The locali

Roles of TRPV1 and TRPA1 in Spontaneous Pain from Inflamed Masseter Muscle.

Craniofacial muscle pain, such as spontaneous pain and bite-evoked pain, are major symptoms in patients with temporomandibular disorders and infection. However, the underlying mechanisms of muscle pain, especially mechanisms of highly prevalent spontaneous pain, are poorly understood. Recently, we reported that transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) contributes to spontaneous pain but only marginally contributes to bite-evoked pain during masseter inflammation. Here, we investigated the role of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) in spontaneous and bite-evoked pain during

Simultaneous Bilateral Hypertrophies of the Parotid Gland and Masseter Muscle: Case Report.

Increased salivary demand can lead to enlarged parotid salivary glands, and increased activity of the masseter muscles can cause masseter hypertrophy. This report describes a most unusual case of simultaneous bilateral hypertrophies of the parotid gland and masseter muscle originating from the very extensive habit of chewing gum. An extensive literature review uncovered many cases of the independent existence of masseteric or parotid hypertrophy, but no example of the simultaneous occurrence of these 2 conditions.

Influence of unilateral masseter muscle atrophy on craniofacial morphology in growing rabbits.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether the induction of unilateral masticatory muscle dysfunction can alter the skeletal growth patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one white male New Zealand rabbits (4 weeks old) were divided into 3 groups of 7 subjects: group 1 served as the control to study normal craniofacial growth. In groups 2 and 3, rabbits were injected with 5 units and 15 units of Botulinum toxin A (BTXA) into the right masseter muscle, respectively. The effect of a neuromuscular blockade of masseteric activity on craniofacial growth was evaluated with 3 samples

Use of the masseter motor nerve in facial animation with free muscle transfer.

Facial paralysis is either congenital or acquired, and of varying severity, which leads to an asymmetrical or absent facial expression. It is an important disability both from the aesthetic and functional points of view. Between 2003 and 2008, at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Parma, Italy, 21 patients with facial paralysis had their faces reanimated with a gracilis transplant reinnervated by the masseter motor nerve. All free-muscle transplants survived the transfer, and no flap was lost. Facial symmetry at rest and while smiling was excellent or good in most cases, an
