BACKGROUND: Skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction can yield excellent aesthetic results, but high rates of mastectomy flap necrosis have been reported. A prospective cohort study was undertaken to compare three methods of assessing mastectomy flap viability following skin-sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction to determine which is most effective in reducing mastectomy flap necrosis.
METHODS: The study group included 60 consecutive patients (99 breasts) undergoing skin-sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with either tissue expanders (n = 39) or transverse

BACKGROUND: Breast-conserving surgery has become the standard approach for about 80% of patients treated for primary breast cancer in most centres. However, mastectomy is still required in case of multicentric and/or large tumours or where recurrences occur after conservative treatment. When a total mastectomy is performed, the removal of the nipple areola complex (NAC) is a strongly debated issue. In fact, although removal of the NAC greatly increases the patient's sensation of mutilation, and the risk of tumor involvement of the areola is reported as a very variable percentage, NAC excision

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy are at risk of developing Post Mastectomy Pain Syndrome (PMPS), and socio-demographic factors such as race, ethnicity, and neighborhood disadvantage have been posited as risk factors for the development of PMPS. This observational study assessed development of PMPS across different racial/ethnic and socio-demographic categories for women undergoing mastectomy.
METHODS: This prospective, observational study included women between 18 and 85 years of age, undergoing mastectomy surgery. The primary outcomes were the Brief Pain Inve

BACKGROUND: In recent years, endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (ENM) has been applied in breast cancer treatment, whereas conventional open mastectomy (COM) remains widely adopted in clinical practice. The data about the oncological outcomes of ENM vs. COM was rare, especially the multicenter data.
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study enrolled 2,314 early breast cancer patients diagnosed with stage 0-III, and treated with either ENM or COM from September 1st, 2021 to January 30th, 2025 at three institutions. After exclusions, the final cohort consisted of 1,722 patients, of

Phantom breast syndrome (PBS) following mastectomy has already been reported by other authors. The temporal course, character and extent of these phenomena, however, have not yet been elucidated. In a prospective study, we investigated the incidence, clinical picture and the temporal course of PBS. One hundred and twenty women who, during a 1 year period, embarked consecutively on post-operative control or treatment at the department, were interviewed by a standard questionnaire 3 weeks after the operation. One year later 110 patients were interviewed again. The median age at the first intervi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surgical management of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) is often mastectomy. No guidelines specifically address contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for this population. We assessed factors associated with CPM at the time of IBTR mastectomy.
METHODS: Patients undergoing mastectomy for IBTR (10/2008-5/2024) were identified. Demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment details were assessed.
RESULTS: Of the 381 eligible IBTR patients, 221 (58.0%) had a unilateral therapeutic mastectomy and 160 (42.0%) underwent mastectomy with CPM. CPM patients

INTRODUCTION: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) accounts for 15% of all breast cancers and generally, the prognosis is good if treated optimally. The standard treatment includes breast conservative surgery along with adjuvant radiotherapy. Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) preserves the breast skin envelope but its oncological safety poses a few concerns. Moreover, no DCIS-specific studies have compared the local recurrence (LR) rate following total mastectomy (TM) or SSM. We evaluated the LR rate in DCIS patients who underwent either TM or SSM.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study on women who u

INTRODUCTION: Contralateral symmetrising mastectomy (CSM) may be a good alternative to breast reconstruction for some women following a single mastectomy for breast cancer, but women report challenges accessing care. We explored the current practice and provision of CSM as an alternative to breast reconstruction in the UK.
METHODS: An online survey was developed to explore current pathways for women seeking CSM and the information and support provided. The survey was circulated via social media and the UK professional associations, July 2023-May 2024. One survey was completed per unit. Descri

BACKGROUND: Despite that breast conservative therapy became the standard of care in breast cancer, modified radical mastectomy, a large mutilating surgery, is still required for an important number of patients. In order to improve the quality of life and the psychological aspects of a surgery involving the femininity of woman, we developed a new less invasive procedure called infra-radical mastectomy. It aims to save the neckline of patients by the maintenance of the peripheral skin-fatty flap that constitutes the base for implantation of the breast. This phase I study analyzed the feasibility

BACKGROUND: Reconstructive trends and outcomes for nipple-sparing mastectomy continue to be defined. The graduated impact of breast size and mastectomy weight remains incompletely evaluated.
METHODS: All patients undergoing nipple-sparing mastectomy from 2006 to June of 2016 were identified. Demographics and outcomes were analyzed and stratified by mastectomy weight of 800 g or higher (large group), between 799 and 400 g (intermediate group), and less than 400 g (small group).
RESULTS: Of 809 nipple-sparing mastectomies, 66 (8.2 percent) had mastectomy weights of 800 g or higher, 328 (40.5 p

To evaluate the oncological outcomes of patients with breast cancer after nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM)/skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM), followed by immediate reconstruction, as compared to conventional mastectomy (CM).SSM/NSM has been increasingly used to treat women with breast cancer who wish to preserve the overlying breast skin, but concern exist regarding its oncological safety due to the potential for residual breast tissue. We report our experience performing SSM/NSM for breast cancer treatment compared to CM with a long follow-up period. All consecutive patients who underwent mastectom

BACKGROUND: Same-day discharge after mastectomy (SDM) is safe for patients meeting narrow eligibility criteria. Our institution embarked on a feasibility study for an SDM pathway with expanded eligibility criteria.
STUDY DESIGN: An SDM pathway was created to ensure proper education and expectations. Data were prospectively collected for all patients who underwent mastectomy from February 2022 to May 2023. Demographics, treatments, and complications were compared for patients who underwent SDM with those who stayed overnight. Patient-reported outcomes were collected via Recovery Tracker, an el

INTRODUCTION: Mastectomy and liposuction are the most used techniques for the treatment of pubertal gynecomastia. This study compared the surgical time and safety of the combined technique versus isolated mastectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective single-center study was conducted in males with bilateral gynecomastia treated between 2005 and 2022. Patients with synchronous double-field approach, operated by specialists, with prior endocrinological evaluation and a minimum follow-up of 2 years, were included. Two cohorts were established depending on whether or not tumescent liposuction

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age are chronically underrepresented in breast cancer studies. Recent studies suggest that almost 40% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer who are of reproductive age want to have children after completing treatment. In this study, the authors evaluated patients of reproductive age who had undergone nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) and implant-based reconstruction. The authors compared those who became pregnant with those who did not with respect to clinical and radiologic changes that are reported at follow-up.
METHODS: Any patient 45 years of age or youn

BACKGROUND: Women who undergo mastectomy for breast cancer may be prone to prolonged opioid use (POU). However, risk factors for long-term opioid use after mastectomy remain unclear. This study seeks to identify risk factors for POU after mastectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A single-institution database was queried for women who underwent mastectomy for breast cancer between January 2016 and December 2017. Patients were stratified based on opioid use < 90 or ≥ 90 days after mastectomy or completion of their reconstruction. Clinicopathologic and operative parameters as well as preoperative and p

It is known that survival is unaffected by the choice of surgical management for breast cancer (BC) patients. Despite this fact, recent literature reveals that the number of bilateral mastectomies (BMs) in the United States is increasing. In an effort to elucidate potential factors influencing this trend, we investigated socioeconomic and clinicopathologic characteristics of our patient cohort that could have affected a patient's decision between unilateral mastectomy (UM) versus BM. Five-hundred-eight patients with unilateral BC who underwent mastectomy between 2000 and 2009 were analyzed: 39

BACKGROUND: The treatment of gynecomastia depends on multiple factors, and the best modality is controversial. In this study, we aimed to determine the best management approach by comparing outcomes of two groups of patients with gynecomastia who received subcutaneous mastectomy combined with liposuction and liposuction only.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 64 patients who underwent surgery for gynecomastia. We divided the patients into two groups: group A, patients who underwent liposuction only; and group B, patients who underwent liposuction and subcutaneous mastectomy. T
