Interaction Between Age and Task Demand on Brain Connectivity Associated With Mastication.

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor processing is critical to the ageing brain and geriatric health. Masticatory performance (MP) is key to the systemic health of older individuals. Neuroimaging research has revealed a potential link between brain functional connectivity (FC) and MP. Using the masticatory perturbation task (MPT), we investigated the FC associated with MP under different conditions of task demand and age groups. METHODS: Thirty-four older-age (OA, ≥ 65 years), 26 middle-aged (MA, between 40 and 64 years) and 42 younger-age (YA, < 40 years) participants were recruited for assessment of th

Identification of key miRNAs in unilateral mastication-induced disruption of cartilage homeostasis.

OBJECTIVE: The present study identified potentially pivotal miRNAs contributing to chondrogenic differentiation in temporomandibular joint suffering abnormal stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control and experimental unilateral mastication (EUM) group. Bone micro-structure parameters was detected by micro-CT, and FGF-1 and MMP-1 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry. Differentially expressed miRNAs of bilateral condyle cartilage were screened via miRNA microarray at 4- and 8-week EUM, then further verified using quantitative reverse-transc

Unilateral lingual nerve transection alters jaw-tongue coordination during mastication in pigs.

During chewing, movements and deformations of the tongue are coordinated with jaw movements to manage and manipulate the bolus and avoid injury. Individuals with injuries to the lingual nerve report both tongue injuries due to biting and difficulties in chewing, primarily because of impaired bolus management, suggesting that jaw-tongue coordination relies on intact lingual afferents. Here, we investigate how unilateral lingual nerve (LN) transection affects jaw-tongue coordination in an animal model (pig, Sus scrofa). Temporal coordination between jaw pitch (opening-closing) and 1) anteroposte

Effects of Active Mastication on Chronic Stress-Induced Bone Loss in Mice.

Chronic psychologic stress increases corticosterone levels, which decreases bone density. Active mastication or chewing attenuates stress-induced increases in corticosterone. We evaluated whether active mastication attenuates chronic stress-induced bone loss in mice. Male C57BL/6 (B6) mice were randomly divided into control, stress, and stress/chewing groups. Stress was induced by placing mice in a ventilated restraint tube (60 min, 2x/day, 4 weeks). The stress/chewing group was given a wooden stick to chew during the experimental period. Quantitative micro-computed tomography, histologic anal

Changes in respiratory activity induced by mastication during oral breathing in humans.

We examined the effect of oral breathing on respiratory movements, including the number of respirations and the movement of the thoracic wall at rest and while chewing gum. Forty normal nose breathers were selected by detecting expiratory airflow from the mouth using a CO2 sensor. Chest measurements were recorded using a Piezo respiratory belt transducer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter and trapezius muscles were recorded at rest and while chewing gum during nasal or oral breathing. Oral breathing was introduced by completely occluding the nostrils with a nose clip. During

Effect of experimental jaw muscle pain on dynamic bite force during mastication.

Knowledge about how Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) pain patients regulate masticatory function is still unclear. To investigate the effect of experimental jaw muscle pain as well as texture and size of food on mastication, twelve healthy participants (30.6±7.5 years old) participated in this study. Experimental pain was induced by an infusion of 0.5 M monosodium glutamate (MSG) with isotonic saline (IS) serving as a control. After the infusions, the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS) and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) were filled out. Electromyographic (EMG) activity in the masseter an

Intraorbital erosion of a malar implant resulting in mastication-induced vision changes.

Complications of cosmetic malar augmentation are uncommon. We describe the unusual case of a 60-year-old woman who experienced vision disturbances (flashing lights and diplopia) while masticating. Ten years earlier, she had undergone bilateral malar enhancement with silicone implants. Imaging studies revealed that the implant on the right side had become displaced. The prosthesis had entered the orbit in the retrobulbar area and eroded the lateral zygomaticomaxillary buttress and the orbital floor. Both implants were removed, and the patient's symptoms immediately resolved. To the best of our

Claudication on mastication following bilateral external carotid artery ligation for posterior epistaxis.

This case highlights a potentially disabling complication of intermittent claudication in the region of the masseter muscles on mastication, following bilateral external carotid artery ligation for epistaxis. Although there have been few reports of this complication this may be a reflection of the fact that the operation is rarely performed, and not because the complication is rare. Its potentially disabling nature, and its possible common occurrence after this procedure make awareness of it by surgeons who may carry out this procedure important.

Neural Control of Mastication: Ion-Channel Mechanisms in the Brainstem Central Pattern Generator.

Mastication is a fundamental rhythmic motor behavior controlled by a brainstem central pattern generator (CPG) located within the pontine and medullary reticular formations. Coordinated activation of jaw-opening and jaw-closing muscles is generated by this network and continuously refined through sensory feedback from periodontal mechanoreceptors and muscle spindles, together with descending inputs from the cortical masticatory area (CMA), basal ganglia, and cerebellum. Thus, mastication is regulated by distributed neural circuits rather than a single central locus. At the cellular level, the

Oropharyngeal structural dynamics during mastication and swallowing associated with tongue base volumetric changes.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze oropharyngeal dynamics during mastication and swallowing in a minipig model with volumetric enlargement and reduction of the tongue base. DESIGN: Six same-sex sibling pairs of 8-9-months-old Yucatan minipigs were analyzed. Of each pair one minipig was fed with high-calorie pellets to reach obesity (BMI > 51) for volumetric enlargement of the tongue base while the other was normal-weighted (BMI < 37) receiving surgical coblation for volumetric reduction. At baseline and week-5 post-surgery x-ray video fluoroscopy was recorded during unrestrained feeding with barium-mixed

Path pattern and movement during mastication on habitual and non-habitual chewing sides.

PURPOSE: To clarify the presence or absence of differences in path pattern and movement during mastication between the habitual and non-habitual chewing sides. METHODS: Participants were 225 healthy adults with natural dentition. Mandibular movement while chewing gummy jelly on each side was recorded, and masticatory path pattern was classified into five types (one normal and four abnormal). The frequency of each pattern was measured and compared between chewing sides. The amount, rhythm, velocity, and stability of movement and masticatory performance were measured and compared between chewin

State of mastication affects quality of life in patients with maxillary sinus cancer.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The quality of life of head and neck cancer patients after treatment is poor compared with a typical population sample. However, little is known about patients with maxillary sinus cancer. The identification of symptoms that are most troublesome for these patients and the development of strategies to minimize these negative sequelae should be matters of high priority. STUDY DESIGN: A restrospective study of patients with maxillary sinus cancer who underwent maxillary bone resection. METHODS: Thirty patients with maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma participated in t

[The value of the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) in screening for dysphagia and malnutrition].

The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) measures the number of bites, chewing cycles, swallows, and the total time required to swallow a standardized saltine cracker. The objective was to evaluate the relevance of TOMASS as a screening tool for dysphagia and malnutrition. This prospective study compared TOMASS results with nutritional status in a group of 30 dysphagic subjects and a control group of 30 matched participants. The TOMASS results (number of chewing cycles, swallows, and total time) were significantly higher in the dysphagic group than in the control group, and in ma

Giant cell tumor of the masticator space: case report and literature review.

Giant cell tumors of the head and neck are rare. We describe the case of a 50-year-old man who presented with otalgia and eustachian tube dysfunction. After his symptoms persisted despite aggressive medical management, further investigation revealed the presence of a firmness in his left parotid tail. Computed tomography identified a heterogeneously enhancing mass in the left masticator space. The tumor was removed surgically, and it was diagnosed on histopathology as a giant cell tumor. The patient recovered uneventfully and was closely followed for signs of recurrence. To the best of our kno
