INTRODUCTION: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are a series of perioperative care to optimize preoperative preparation, prevent postoperative complications, minimize stress, and speedup recovery. Tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy are common surgical procedures for chronic suppurative otitis media.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety between ERAS and conventional recovery after surgery in the perioperative period of chronic suppurative otitis media.
METHODS: From April 2018 to February 2019, a total of 84 patients scheduled for tympanoplasty and/or mastoidectomy due to

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective clinical study was to examine the negative effect of drilling by measuring peripheral Otolin-1 levels as a potential biomarker.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent mastoidectomy due to chronic otitis media were included in the study. Otolin-1 levels were measured preoperatively and 6 h postoperatively, and total drilling time was noted. Preoperative serum Otolin-1 levels in 31 patients were compared with those in31 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Pre- and postoperative serum Otolin-1 levels were also compared.
RESULTS: Tympanoplasty

OBJECTIVES: The inconsistent measures used to report outcomes after mastoidectomy to treat cholesteatoma make it impossible for clinicians to compare results and apply them appropriately to patient care. We sought to identify and assess the type and relative frequency of the reported measures.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, the Web of Science.
REVIEW METHODS: We searched 3 independent databases for articles that reported outcomes of middle ear cholesteatoma treated with mastoidectomy. Articles were assessed for eligibility using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analys

BACKGROUND: A mastoid cavity resulting from a canal wall down mastoidectomy can result in major morbidity for patients due to chronic otorrhea and infection, difficulty with hearing aids and vertigo with temperature changes. Mastoid obliteration with reconstruction of the bony external ear canal recreates the normal anatomy to avoid such morbidity. Few have the studied the quality of life benefit that this procedure confers.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted to determine if mastoid obliteration with autologous cranial bone graft following mastoidectomy improves qua

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the long-term results of tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy in elderly patients with chronic otitis media (COM).
METHODS: We included 192 patients with intractable COM who underwent both tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy from the same surgeon between January 2003 and December 2006 and were followed up for more than 3 years. The patients were divided into two groups: an "old COM group" of 83 patients (more than 65 years of age) and a "young COM group" of 109 patients (between 21 and 40 years of age). We compared the preoperative and postoperative levels of hearing, the typ

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine infusion on the amount of opioid that is consumed during the operation, the amount of analgesic that the patient requires after the operation and on pain scores.
METHODS: Forty patients who were ASA I-II, between 18-50 years old, and who were scheduled for mastoidectomy operation were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups as group Dexmedetomidine (Group D) and group Placebo (Group P). Dexmedetomidine was administered at the rate of 0.5 mcg/kg/hour to the cases in Group D during operation and 9% NaCl wa

The effect of grafting mastoid cavities with small Davis cutaneous pinch grafts was assessed in 15 patients. Following revision of the cavity and Davis pinch grafting the resultant cavity was completely dry in 13 patients (87%) over a period ranging from 1 to 30 months with a mean of 7.3 months, with five becoming dry within 1 month. Patient satisfaction with respect to reduction in discharge and smell was excellent (87%). We believe that the Davis graft technique has a beneficial role in persistent post-mastoidectomy otorrhoea especially when previous standard revision techniques have failed.

It is almost impossible to establish the natural history of Menière's disease and, by the same token, it is difficult to confirm the efficacy of endolymphatic sac surgery. The authors doubt the logic of sac operations. Only two controlled trials of sac surgery have been found and both cast doubt upon its value. There do not appear to be any controlled trials indicating that it works. In 14 cases of incapacitating Menière's disease, where vestibular nerve section was indicated, cortical mastoidectomy was offered and accepted in the expectation that two-thirds might be spared the more major proc

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the partial mastoid obliteration of the so-called radical mastoid cavity after canal-wall down mastoidectomy (CWD) for cochlear implantation (CI) compared to overclosure of the external ear canal as two stage procedures.
METHODS: Out of 1020 patients undergoing cochlear implantation between January 1st, 2003 and June 15th, 2016 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, University Hospital Cologne, eight patients underwent obliteration of the radical cavity prior to cochlear implantation. In four additional patients, the external ear canal wa

OBJECTIVE: To report the way for searching the chorda tympani nerve and the significance for preserving the chorda tympani nerve during canal-wall-down mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty surgery.
METHOD: Sixty-six cases with chronic suppurative otitis media underwent canal-wall-down mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty surgery. According to the marker of the short crus of incus, the posterior wall of auditory canal was lowered and crista of the chorda tympani nerve was found through tracing the facial nerve contour. The chorda tympani nerve was preserved after clearing the surrounding tissue.

The article is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth and 275th anniversary of the death of the great French surgeon Jean-Louis Petit (1674-1750), who made an invaluable contribution to various branches of theoretical and practical medicine, including otolaryngology. Petit was the first who purposefully perform trepanation of the mastoid process in mastoiditis to drain mastoid cells filled with pus. It was described in his work "Traité des maladies chirurgicales", published posthumously in 1774. Subsequently, Hermann Schwartze (1837-1910) took into account J.-L. Petit's experience and

Our goal was to describe a case of a rare complication that developed as a result of multiple surgical interventions over the years due to chronic mastoiditis - specifically, a pathological connection between a retroauricular skin defect and the mastoid cavity - and its surgical management. Based on subjective and objective findings, a surgical intervention was planned, including radical cavity obliteration and closure of the cutaneous-mastoid fistula using the temporomastoid periosteum. The surgery was successfully completed, resulting in improved hearing and the elimination of the infectious
