Disinhibition of maternal behavior following neurotoxic lesions of the hypothalamus in primigravid rats.

Virgin female rats do not respond maternally to foster pups due to an endogenous neural circuit that actively inhibits the display of maternal behavior. Once pregnant, primigravid rats will continue to avoid foster pups until just prior to or at parturition. Anosmia or lesions of the olfactory tract, medial amygdala, and areas of the hypothalamus will stimulate virgin females to display maternal behavior rapidly, but little is known of the effect of these lesions in primigravid rats. The objective of the present study was to determine if neurotoxic lesions of the dorsomedial (DMH) and ventrome

Crying and motor behavior of six-week-old infants and postpartum maternal mood.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prepartum and postpartum emotional distress in first-time mothers is associated with crying and fussing behavior and activity level in 6-week-old infants, after eliminating potential biases. DESIGN: Observational study examining predictive and concurrent associations between maternal emotions and infant behaviors. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: Expectant primiparas attending obstetricians' offices for routine prenatal care were recruited in the third trimester. Mothers and babies were required to be free of medical complications to complete the stu

Effects of the autoimmune uterine/maternal environment upon cortical ectopias, behavior and autoimmunity.

NZB and BXSB mice develop autoimmune disease and learn poorly on avoidance tasks. In addition, many of these mice have ectopic collections of neurons, which occur prenatally, in layer I of the cerebral neocortex. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate the contribution of the uterine/maternal environment upon these variables by transferring fertilized ova to an autoimmune or a non-autoimmune maternal host. In Experiment 1 fertilized DBA ova were transferred into the uteri of BXSB maternal recipients. Later, these animals and conventionally reared DBAs were tested for paw preference, s

Protein malnutrition induced during gestation: its effect on pup development and maternal behavior.

Repeated time-lapse photographic observations were used to examine the ontogeny of behavioral development in prenatally malnourished rat pups following birth. Pups born to dams receiving a low protein diet (7% casein by weight) were fostered at birth to well-nourished dams and behavioral observations were made at 4-day intervals. Dams nursing gestationally malnourished pups were observed to spend more time in the nesting area with their pups towards the end of lactation. Moreover, the behavioral development (locomotion, feeding, and rearing and climbing activity) of gestationally malnourished

Maternal edible THC consumption alters offspring neurodevelopment and emotional behavior in rhesus macaques.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal cannabis exposure is associated with adverse offspring outcomes including altered neurodevelopment. However, there is insufficient evidence to establish a direct association. We sought to determine the impact of chronic prenatal delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure on offspring neurodevelopment and emotional behavior in a translational rhesus macaque model. METHODS: Animals were divided into two groups, control and THC-exposed, with both groups receiving a daily edible (placebo or THC) pre-conception, throughout pregnancy, and postnatally. MRI was performed longitu

Maternal sensitivity and child behavior problems in the context of intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as physical, sexual, or psychological violence perpetrated by a romantic partner. When IPV occurs prenatally, it can affect the developing stress regulatory system of the fetus and confer risk for later behavior problems. Postnatal exposure to IPV is also linked to greater behavior problems in children, potentially due to the way that high-stress home environments can interfere with the development of self-regulation. Maternal sensitivity, on the other hand, is an important parenting factor that promotes children's adaptive self-regulation. The presen

Disrupted maternal behavior in morphine-dependent pregnant rats and anhedonia in their offspring.

It is currently estimated that every 15 minutes an infant is born with opioid use disorder and undergoes intense early life trauma due to opioid withdrawal. Clinical research on the long-term consequences of gestational opioid exposure reports increased rates of social, conduct, and emotional disorders in these children. Here, we investigate the impact of perinatal opioid exposure (POE) on behaviors associated with anhedonia and stress in male and female Sprague Dawley rats. Young adult female rats were administered morphine via programmable, subcutaneous micro-infusion pumps before, during, a

Disrupting Maternal Behavior and Inducing Cannibalism Due to Valproic Acid: An Unexplored Insight.

INTRODUCTION: Valproic acid (VPA) is the most widely used chemical to develop the preclinical model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, in addition to inducing autism, it causes different teratogenic effects like teeth malformation, tail kink, and abnormal body growth in offspring. So far, no study has explored VPA-induced maternal misbehavior, miscarriage, and maternal cannibalism. We aimed to determine the cannibalistic effects of VPA in pregnant female Wistar rats and VPA's influence on causing miscarriage frequency. METHODS: Our study was conducted on pregnant Wistar rats. Maternal care behavior and physiology moderate offspring outcomes following gestational exposure to opioids.

The opioid epidemic has resulted in a drastic increase in gestational exposure to opioids. Opioid-dependent pregnant women are typically prescribed medications for opioid use disorders ("MOUD"; e.g., buprenorphine [BUP]) to mitigate the harmful effects of abused opioids. However, the consequences of exposure to synthetic opioids, particularly BUP, during gestation on fetal neurodevelopment and long-term outcomes are poorly understood. Further, despite the known adverse effects of opioids on maternal care, many preclinical and clinical studies investigating the effects of gestational opioid exp

Children's Behavior and Maternal Parenting Stress in Young Children With Sex Chromosome Trisomies.

OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) usually show a higher frequency of behavioral problems than typically developing (TD) children. However, little is known about the presence of behavioral issues in toddlers with SCT. This study aimed at investigating their behavioral profile in the second year of life and its impact on maternal stress. METHOD: Participants were 87 children ranging in age from 18 to 26 months: 63 children with SCTs (all diagnosed prenatally) and 24 TD children. Their psychomotor and language development and their behavioral profile were a

Exposure to maternal diabetes in utero and offspring eating behavior: The EPOCH study.

The risk of becoming overweight among offspring exposed to gestational diabetes (GDM) in utero is two-fold higher than in the general population. The responsible mechanisms are likely multifactorial, with some evidence that GDM exposure alters brain satiety signaling, which may impact eating behavior. To better understand these effects, we investigated the relationship between GDM exposure, eating behavior, and total energy intake in 268 adolescents from the Exploring Perinatal Outcomes among Children cohort, who were exposed (n = 50) or not exposed (n = 217) to GDM in utero. Eating behavior w

Maternal hypothyroxinaemia in early pregnancy and problem behavior in 5-year-old offspring.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence, though not consistent, that offspring born to mothers with subtle decreases in thyroid function early in their pregnancies may be at risk of cognitive impairments and attention problems. However, other types of problem behavior have not been addressed thus far. We tested whether maternal thyroid function in early pregnancy is associated with several types of problem behavior in offspring at age 5-6 years. METHODS: This was a longitudinal study that included the data of 2000 mother-child pairs from the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study. At a m

Maternal heavy alcohol use and toddler behavior problems: a fixed effects regression analysis.

Using data from the longitudinal Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, the aims of the current study were to examine associations between postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use and toddler behavior problems, taking both observed and unobserved confounding factors into account by employing fixed effects regression models. Postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use (defined as drinking alcohol 4 or more times a week, or drinking 7 units or more per alcohol use episode) and toddler internalizing and externalizing behavior problems were assessed when the toddlers were aged 18 and 36 months. Maternal ps

Variations in maternal behavior in rats selected for infant ultrasonic vocalization in isolation.

Individual differences in maternal behavior in rodents are associated with altered physiology and behavior in offspring across their lifespan and across generations. Offspring of rat dams that engage in high frequencies of high-arched-back nursing and pup-licking (High-LG) show attenuated stress responses compared to those engaging in lower frequencies (Low-LG). Selective breeding also produces widespread alterations in physiology and behavior that are stable over generations. To examine processes underlying generational and developmental influences on anxiety in an animal model, we developed

Gender-dependent effects of maternal immune activation on the behavior of mouse offspring.

Autism spectrum disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by two core symptoms; impaired social interactions and communication, and ritualistic or repetitive behaviors. Both epidemiological and biochemical evidence suggests that a subpopulation of autistics may be linked to immune perturbations that occurred during fetal development. These findings have given rise to an animal model, called the "maternal immune activation" model, whereby the offspring from female rodents who were subjected to an immune stimulus during early or mid-pregnancy are studied. Here, C57BL/6 mouse dams

Oral cleft recurrence risk and subsequent maternal fertility preferences and behavior in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Oral clefts are among the most common birth defects with numerous impacts on affected individuals and families. However, little is known about how being at a greater risk of having an affected child affects subsequent maternal fertility decisions. We investigated differences in fertility preferences and behavior between mothers who are themselves affected with cleft lip with/without cleft palate but have had no affected children and unaffected mothers of an affected child. We also compared these outcomes between unaffected mothers of a first versus another affected child. METHODS:

Maternal psychosocial factors around delivery, and the behavior of 2-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of the present study were to explore whether maternal psychosocial factors, mental health and work stress around delivery, are related to the behavior of 2-year-old children. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study design, pregnant women attending the National Taiwan University Hospital for delivery and post-partum care from April 2004 to January 2005 were recruited and their children were observed at 24 months. A total of 186 mother-term-born child dyads completed the measurement. The five-item Mental Health Index (MHI-5) self-report data of maternal psychosocial fa

[Impact of parenting behavior relevant to infant's sleep on maternal sleep and health].

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is affected by infant's sleep problems like night awakening or bedtime difficulties. Previous studies indicated that infant's sleep problems are affected by particular parenting behaviour (hereinafter referred to as parenting). However, the relation between maternal sleep and infant's sleep has been unclear and there is only limited information on the interaction between parenting, infant's sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal health. The purpose of this study was: 1. to examine the relationship between infant's sleep problems and maternal sleep and health; and 2. to
