[The importance of nutrition in maternal health and economy in nutrition].

Iron requirement of women in child bearing age are higher than normal level. During pregnancy and lactation women also need extra food to meet the increasing iron and other nutrient requirements. When women can not meet these requirements, they use their own tissues. This in turn cause deteriation of mother and child health. In our country, one third of mothers have various health problems and half of them are anemic. The principal factors for nutritional and health problems are poverty, lack of nutritional knowledge, frequent pregnancy and child birth. Effective and continuing nutrition educa

The effects of birth spacing on child and maternal health.

Child and maternal mortality and morbidity are examined in relation to the interval between pregnancies. Most data available pertain to child mortality. Very little reliable information links child morbidity or maternal health detriments to short birth spacing. The evidence on child mortality suggests that very short intervals (conceptions less than six months after a birth) are detrimental to survival of the second child, but these results must be viewed in light of the methodological difficulties of studies of this subject. Policy implications of the data are perhaps less clear than is somet

Modeling Pathways to Describe How Maternal Health Care Providers' Mental Health Influences the Provision of Respectful Maternity Care in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal health (MH) providers may experience traumatic events, such as maternal or fetal death, that can contribute to stress and burnout. Past trauma, poor working relationships, and under-resourced environments not only affect providers' own emotional well-being but also reduce their ability to provide respectful maternity care (RMC). METHODS: Data were collected in mid-2021 as a cross-sectional survey with 302 MH providers working in 25 maternities in 3 districts in Malawi to measure burnout, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We present a pathway model d

Social media addiction, maternal mental health, and children's oral health behaviours among immigrants.

OBJECTIVES: Oral health disparities persist among immigrants. Little is known about how social media shapes the socio-psychological environment in which parenting and health behaviours occur. This study examined the link between immigrant mothers' anxiety and depression and children's oral health behaviours (OHBs) and evaluated social media addiction as a mediator or moderator. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited immigrant parents of children aged 2-12 years in Edmonton, Canada. Parents completed a questionnaire assessing demographics, children's OHBs (dental visits, toothbrushing,

Association Between Maternal Sleep Health and Mental Health: Moderating Role of Family Function.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy, as a complex physiological process, significantly alters maternal sleep patterns, which are closely associated with various maternal health outcomes. This study explored the association between maternal sleep health and anxiety/depression symptoms and whether this association differed by family function. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among pregnant women attending obstetrics departments at two hospitals in Nanjing, China. The Sleep Health Index, Family APGAR, and Patient Health Questionnaire-4 were administered to evaluate sleep health, family function,

Maternal age and offspring adult health: evidence from the health and retirement study.

Advanced maternal age is associated with negative offspring health outcomes. This interpretation often relies on physiological processes related to aging, such as decreasing oocyte quality. We use a large, population-based sample of American adults to analyze how selection and lifespan overlap between generations influence the maternal age-offspring adult health association. We find that offspring born to mothers younger than age 25 or older than 35 have worse outcomes with respect to mortality, self-rated health, height, obesity, and the number of diagnosed conditions than those born to mothe

Maternal childhood adversity as an upstream vulnerability for prenatal alcohol use and maternal mental health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health and substance use during pregnancy often co-occur, yet antecedent factors contributing to both remain understudied. This analysis examined associations between maternal adverse childhood experiences (mACEs) and (a) alcohol use and (b) stress, mood, and trauma symptoms during pregnancy. METHODS: The ENRICH-2 cohort recruited pregnant individuals into mild-to-moderate Alcohol and Control groups. Alcohol use was assessed via prospective interviews and ethanol biomarkers. Maternal childhood adversity was measured with a 10-item Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE

Analysis of Maternity Rights Perception: Impact of Maternal Care in Diverse Socio-Health Contexts.

Maternity rights are perceived and fulfilled differently according to women's psychosocial characteristics, leading to varying maternal experiences and outcomes. It is necessary to know the impact of cultural context, emotional well-being, and resource availability on the maternal woman's clinical care experience. The aim is to identify if these factors contribute to disparities in the perception of maternity rights fulfillment in Spain and Colombia. This retrospective observational study focused on women who received maternity-related healthcare in Spain or Colombia. A total of 185 women were

Maternal and Newborn Health in Somalia: A Narrative Review of Health System Challenges and Public Health Priorities.

Maternal and newborn health in Somalia remains a critical public health challenge within a fragile and conflict-affected health system. This review aims to examine the magnitude, determinants, and health system challenges affecting maternal and neonatal outcomes in Somalia, and to identify priority public health actions and research gaps. A narrative review methodology was employed, drawing on peer-reviewed literature from PubMed and Google Scholar, alongside grey literature including national surveys (SHDS 2020), policy documents, and reports from international organizations. Findings show th

Exploring the Link Between Maternal Oral Health Literacy and Child Oral Health Behaviours.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Caregiver's oral health literacy (OHL) has a multidimensional impact on child oral health outcomes. In infants and toddlers, oral health behaviours (OHB) play a crucial role in the development of early childhood caries and could be related to the caregiver's OHL. A simple OHL assessment may help identify children at risk of caries. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal OHL and the child OHBs during the first 2 years of life. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 398 mothers of children aged 6 to 24 months. Maternal OHL was assess

Beyond Housing for Health: Using Flexible Funds to Improve Maternal and Child Health.

Upstreaming Housing for Health (UHfH) was a pilot program that aimed to improve housing stability and reduce health inequities among people experiencing high-risk pregnancies and their infants. It served 50 families from 2019 to 2020. One critical component of UHfH was an innovative flexible fund, which was originally designed to address housing stability (e.g., rent arrears) but expanded its scope to address material needs that promoted family stability within the context of their housing situation (e.g., housing safety or maternal-infant health while in shelter). Seventy-six percent of famil

ENDOCRINOLOGY IN PREGNANCY: Targeting metabolic health promotion to optimise maternal and offspring health.

There is an increase in maternal metabolic burden due to the rise in pregnancies complicated by obesity, gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. Metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy is associated with increased risks of long-term morbidity and mortality for women and their offspring. Lifestyle interventions in pregnancy in women at risk of metabolic dysfunction have demonstrated short-term improvements such as reduced gestational weight gain and lowered risk of gestational diabetes. It is not known whether these interventions lead to sustained improvements in the

Global health indicators and maternal health futures: The case of Intrauterine Growth Restriction.

Public health indicators generally operate in the world as credible, apolitical and authoritative. But indicators are less stable than they appear. Clinical critiques of Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) criteria have been forthcoming for decades. This article, though, takes up the measuring and calculation gradients of IUGR in the ultrasound machine itself, including the software algorithms that identify IUGR. One hospital where research was conducted incorrectly predicted pathological birth outcomes 14 of 14 times. We are at a historical moment when the global use of prenatal diagnostic

Implementation of maternal death audits and changes in maternal health care in Cambodia, 2010-2017.

OBJECTIVE: Cambodia is one of seven countries globally that met Millennium Development Goal 5A: reduction of maternal deaths by at least 75% between 1990 and 2015. The maternal death audit (MDA) was instituted in 2004 to support the improvement of maternal care. We evaluated progress in MDA implementation and maternal health services in Cambodia between 2010 and 2017. METHODS: International experts and the national MDA committee members assessed all case abstracts, investigation questionnaires and audit meeting minutes covering all maternal deaths reported in Cambodia in 2010 and 2017 for qua

Maternal Hookworm Infection and Its Effects on Maternal Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hookworm is an intestinal parasite that infects nearly 230 million people, with another 5.1 billion at risk, especially in poverty-stricken tropical and subtropical regions. Pregnancy is an especially vulnerable time for hookworm infection because of its effect on both maternal and subsequently fetal health. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. The meta-analysis was performed on the association between maternal hookworm and maternal anemia, as well as maternal hookworm coinfection with malaria. The prevalence of hookworm ranged from 1% to 78% in pregnant women, whereas malaria
