BACKGROUND: North Eastern Kenya has persistently had poor maternal, new-born and child health (MNCH) indicators. Barriers to access and utilisation of MNCH services are structural, individual and community-level factors rooted in sociocultural norms. A package of interventions was designed and implemented in Garissa sub-County aimed at creating demand for services. Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) were trained to generate demand for and facilitate access to MNCH care in communities, while health care providers were trained on providing culturally acceptable and sensitive services. Minor stru

OBJECTIVES: The study seeks to improve understanding of maternity health seeking behaviors in resource-deprived urban settings. The objective of this paper is to identify the factors which influence the choice of place of delivery among the urban poor, with a distinction between sub-standard and "appropriate" health facilities.
METHODS: The data are from a maternal health project carried out in two slums of Nairobi, Kenya. A total of 1,927 women were interviewed, and 25 health facilities where they delivered, were assessed. Facilities were classified as either "inappropriate" or "appropriate"

BACKGROUND: Achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, particularly targets 3.1 (reducing the global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to less than 70 per 100,000 live births) and 3.8 (universal health coverage), requires sustained reductions in maternal mortality and equitable access to essential maternal health services (MHS). Despite global progress, large disparities persist. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) account for more than 90% of maternal deaths worldwide, largely reflecting gaps in access to essential MHS. However, multi-country evidence examining how improvements in MHS

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a major public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with Sub-Saharan Africa bearing a disproportionate burden. Nigeria accounts for over one-quarter of all maternal deaths worldwide. This reflects gaps in access to and continuity of maternal healthcare. The continuum of maternal healthcare, which includes antenatal care (ANC), skilled delivery, and postnatal care (PNC) is critical for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study examines the determinants of continuum of maternal healthcare service utilization in Nige

The maternal and child health situation in developing countries remains critical and deeply concerning, These regions account for 99% of global maternal and under-five deaths. In Nigeria, uptake of critical life-saving maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) services, delivered through antenatal care (ANC), are sub-optimal, leading to poor outcomes. Group antenatal care (G-ANC) is an evolving antenatal care delivery model in low and medium-income countries. G-ANC models can improve quality and uptake of maternal health services.G-ANC model was implemented across 255 primary health facilitie

BACKGROUND: In early March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. In South Africa, the first case was confirmed in early March 2020. According to the WHO, disruptions in essential services due to the COVID-19 pandemic occurred worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic affected access to maternal and child health (MCH) services in many countries, including South Africa. The study aimed to map and describe the existing evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the access to and delivery of maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH) services in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Ebola outbreaks pose a major threat to global public health, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. These outbreaks disrupt the already fragile maternal health services in West Africa. The aims of this study is to assess the effect of Ebola virus disease (EVD) on maternal health service utilisation and perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in West Africa, and the databases used were Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE and African journals online. Studies that reported the effect of the Ebola outbreak on maternal health services in West Africa were eligib

INTRODUCTION: Since March 2014, Guinea has been in the midst of the largest, longest, and deadliest outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease ever recorded. Due to sub-optimal health conditions prior to the outbreak, Guinean women and children may have been especially vulnerable to worsening health care conditions. A rapid assessment was conducted to better understand how the delivery and utilization of routine RMNCH services may have been affected by the extraordinary strain placed on the health system and its client population by the Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
METHODS: Data were collected January-Febr

INTRODUCTION: Despite significant global advancements, the past decade has seen stagnation in Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) service coverage and a concerning high under-five and maternal mortality rates, which have been worsened by COVID-19 pandemic-related disruptions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This scoping review protocol will support the comprehensive mapping, evaluation and assessment of the application, impact, effectiveness and adaptability of health-resilient frameworks in maintaining these services during pandemics, while also identifying gaps in the literature a

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) of Kenya was upgraded to improve access to healthcare for impoverished households, expand universal health coverage, and boost the uptake of essential reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) services. However, premiums may be unaffordable for the poorest households. The Innovative Partnership for Universal Sustainable Healthcare (i-PUSH) programme targets low-income women and their households to improve their access to and utilization of quality healthcare, including RMNCH services, by providing subsidized, mobile phone-based NHIF co

BACKGROUND: Explicit and implicit cultural patterns are critical cultural norms, beliefs, and practices that determine women's health-seeking behaviour. These cultural patterns could limit women's use of maternal health services, resulting in maternal health complications. The study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of explicit and implicit cultural patterns, their meanings and how they influence women's use of maternal health services among Igala women in Nigeria.
METHODS: Roper and Shapira's (2000) focused ethnography was employed with 43 women aged 18-43 years recruited using the p

INTRODUCTION: There has been significant progress in maternal health outcomes in the sub-Saharan African region since the early 1990s, in part due to digital and mobile health interventions. However, critical gaps and disparities remain. Mobile phones in particular have potential to reach underserved, hard-to-reach populations with underdeveloped infrastructure. In spite of the opportunities for mobile phones to address maternal mortality in the region, there is no extensive mapping of the available literature on mobile phone interventions that aim to improve access of maternal care in sub-Sah

BACKGROUND: Despite priority being given to maternal and child health programs in Ethiopia, the reduction of neonatal mortality rate is stagnant, which is more than double the national target. Immediate newborn care and continuity of maternal health services are comprehensive, wide-ranging, and core strategies to overcome neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, the evidence of immediate newborn care practices and the effectiveness of continuity of maternal health services on immediate newborn care practices are scarce. Hence, this study aimed to fill this gap.

BACKGROUND: India leads all nations in numbers of maternal deaths, with poor, rural women contributing disproportionately to the high maternal mortality ratio. In 2005, India launched the world's largest conditional cash transfer scheme, Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), to increase poor women's access to institutional delivery, anticipating that facility-based birthing would decrease deaths. Indian states have taken different approaches to implementing JSY. Tamil Nadu adopted JSY with a reorganization of its public health system, and Gujarat augmented JSY with the state-funded Chiranjeevi Yojana
