Pre-delivery BMI and the Accuracy of Fetal Weight Estimation in Very Preterm Infants.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relation between maternal pre-delivery BMI and the accuracy of sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) in very preterm infants (<32 weeks gestation). METHODS: This retrospective study included singleton infants born between January 2010 and March 2023, at gestational ages 230 to 316 weeks, at a tertiary university-affiliated hospital. Absolute weight, percentage error, absolute percentage error, and overestimation and underestimation of EFW were compared between women with pre-delivery normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.99 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25.0-29.99 kg/m2), and obe

Risk and protective factors in maternal-fetal attachment development.

Prenatal attachment can be described as the parents' emotions, perceptions and behaviors that are related to the fetus. This relationship has been described as the most basic form of the human intimacy and represents the earlier internalized representation of the fetus that both parents typically acquire and elaborate during pregnancy. The quality of the relationship between an infant and his or her parent is an important factor influencing the child's later development, both cognitive and emotional. There is evidence - even though yet unclear - that demographic, perinatal and psychological va

Leptin, fetal growth and insulin resistance in non-diabetic pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Interrogation of the association between leptin, insulin resistance and fetal growth may provide a biological link for the fetal programming of later metabolic health. AIMS: Our aim was to clarify the relationship between maternal and fetal leptin, insulin resistance and fetal growth. STUDY DESIGN: Maternal leptin, glucose and insulin were measured in early pregnancy and at 28weeks and the HOMA index calculated. At 34weeks, ultrasound scan assessed fetal weight and adiposity (abdominal wall width). At delivery birthweight was recorded and cord blood analyzed for fetal c-peptide a

Magnesium sulfate ameliorates maternal and fetal inflammation in a rat model of maternal infection.

OBJECTIVE: Magnesium sulfate is proposed to have neuroprotective effects in the offspring. We examined the effects of maternal magnesium sulfate administration on maternal and fetal inflammatory responses in a rat model of maternal infection. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnant rats were injected with saline, Gram-negative bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide or lipopolysaccharide with magnesium sulfate (pre- and/or after lipopolysaccharide) to mimic infection. Maternal blood, amniotic fluid, fetal blood, and fetal brains were collected 4 hours after lipopolysaccharide and assayed for tumor necrosis fac

Influence of asthma in pregnancy on labor and the newborn.

Asthma in pregnancy has been associated with maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. This study examines the relations of asthma in pregnancy, its severity and its treatment to the labor process, maternal and fetal parameters. Hundred and one consecutive asthmatic women, who gave birth to single babies between November 1993 and November 1994 at the Soroka Medical Center were studied. A group of 77 nonasthmatic women, matched for age and ethnic origin, who gave birth to single babies during the same period served as controls. A larger percentage of asthmatic women suffered from respiratory

Noninvasive prenatal methylomic analysis by genomewide bisulfite sequencing of maternal plasma DNA.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic mechanisms play an important role in prenatal development, but fetal tissues are not readily accessible. Fetal DNA molecules are present in maternal plasma and can be analyzed noninvasively. METHODS: We applied genomewide bisulfite sequencing via 2 approaches to analyze the methylation profile of maternal plasma DNA at single-nucleotide resolution. The first approach used maternal blood samples and polymorphic differences between the mother and fetus to analyze the fetal methylome across the genome. The second approach used the methylation profile of maternal blood cell

Antithyroid drug-induced fetal goitrous hypothyroidism.

Maternal overtreatment with antithyroid drugs can induce fetal goitrous hypothyroidism. This condition can have a critical effect on pregnancy outcome, as well as on fetal growth and neurological development. The purpose of this Review is to clarify if and how fetal goitrous hypothyroidism can be prevented, and how to react when prevention has failed. Understanding the importance of pregnancy-related changes in maternal thyroid status when treating a pregnant woman is crucial to preventing fetal goitrous hypothyroidism. Maternal levels of free T(4) are the most consistent indication of materna

Maternal Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Status, Methylmercury Exposure, and Birth Outcomes in a High-Fish-Eating Mother-Child Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Maternal status of long-chain PUFAs (LC-PUFAs) may be related to fetal growth. Maternal fish consumption exposes the mother to the neurotoxicant methylmercury (MeHg), which, in contrast, may restrict fetal growth. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to examine relations between maternal LC-PUFA status at 28 wk and birth outcomes (birth weight, length, and head circumference), controlling for MeHg exposure throughout pregnancy, in the Seychelles Child Development Study Nutrition Cohort 2. Our secondary aim was to examine the influence of maternal variation in genes regulating the desaturation o

Stress in pregnancy - Implications for fetal BDNF in amniotic fluid at birth.

INTRODUCTION: At the maternal-fetal interface in pregnancy, stress during pregnancy can lead to an increased vulnerability to later psychopathology of the fetus. Potential mediators of this association have scarcely been studied and may include early alterations of fetal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Amniotic fluid is of particular interest for effects on fetal endocrine alterations, as the assessment in amniotic fluid allows for measurements over a time integral. This study hypothesized that maternal psychometrics, socioeconomic status and glucocorticoids are related to BDNF level

A review of neonatal lupus syndrome.

This review article discusses neonatal lupus syndrome (NLS), an immune-mediated disease caused by maternal antibodies. Maternal antibodies in the fetal circulation are mostly but not always protective. NLS is a disease caused by pathogenic maternal autoantibodies in the fetal circulation. The passive immunization of the fetus by NLS-causing maternal antibodies may occur in the absence of a previously known maternal systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease (SARD). Screening for NLS-related antibodies in patients with related SARD or those in whom there is a risk of NLS including first-degree relat

The fetal alcohol syndrome in mice: maternal variables.

CBA, C3H, and C57 female mice maintained on a diet of 20 percent ethanol-derived calories prior to and throughout gestation were mated in a diallele cross. Prenatal death, malformations, and fetal weights were directly related to maternal blood alcohol levels, indicating a maternal effect. Fetal abnormalities and maternal blood alcohol levels varied with maternal strain (CBA > C3H > C57) and were inversely related to maternal alcohol dehydrogenase activity. Microsomal ethanol oxidizing systems induction was directly associated with increased fetal abnormalities, being greatest in CBA females.

[The immune microenvironment in maternal-fetal interface contributes to the parturition and preterm labor].

The maintenance of human pregnancy and the initiation of parturition are closely related with the dynamic balance of the maternal-fetal immune microenvironment. Implantation of the blastocyst into the maternal decidua is the first step in pregnancy establishment, which is favored by the abundant blood flow and the immunotolerant microenvironment maintained by the balance of immune cells. The parturition resembles an inflammatory response that includes secretion of cytokines by resident and infiltrating immune cells into reproductive tissues and the maternal-fetal interface, which promotes the

Caffeinated beverages, decaffeinated coffee, and spontaneous abortion.

We examined the relations between spontaneous abortion and the consumption of caffeine, individual caffeine-containing beverages (coffee, tea, and soda), and decaffeinated coffee in a prospective study of 5,144 pregnant women. We collected information about potential risk factors for spontaneous abortion, including consumption of caffeinated beverages and decaffeinated coffee before and during pregnancy, by interview in the first trimester. Neither total estimated caffeine nor individual caffeinated beverage consumption during the first trimester was associated with an appreciable increase in

Predictors of poor perinatal outcome following maternal perception of reduced fetal movements--a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal perception of reduced fetal movement (RFM) is associated with increased risk of stillbirth and fetal growth restriction (FGR). RFM is thought to represent fetal compensation to conserve energy due to insufficient oxygen and nutrient transfer resulting from placental insufficiency. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of poor perinatal outcome after maternal perception of reduced fetal movements (RFM). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: 305 women presenting with RFM after 28 weeks of gestation were recruited. Demographic factors and clinical history were recorded an

Maternal and fetal genetic predispositions to insulin deficiency and resistance affect fetal growth through distinct pathways.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to investigate whether maternal and fetal genetic predispositions to insulin deficiency and resistance affect offspring fetal growth through distinct pathways in multi-ethnic populations. METHODS: In 5065 multi-ethnic mother-infant pairs, we examined the conditional associations of maternal and fetal partitioned polygenic risk scores (pPRSs) for type 2 diabetes-related pathways with fetal growth outcomes, including birthweight, sum of skinfold thicknesses (SSF), large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births. Fetomaternal cellular and plasma DNA trafficking: the Yin and the Yang.

In human pregnancy, multiple lines of evidence have indicated that there is trafficking of nucleated cells and cell-free DNA between the mother and fetus. Diagnostically, fetal cells in maternal blood and fetal DNA in maternal plasma offer a noninvasive source of fetal material for prenatal diagnosis. Through the developments of methods for fetal cell isolation and fetal DNA detection, many fetal genetic characteristics and chromosomal abnormalities have been detected from maternal blood. Large-scale clinical trials have been initiated that will facilitate the eventual application of these tec

Placental vascular pathology as a mechanism of disease in pregnancy complications.

Inadequate placental development results in pregnancy complications. The extent and the degree of defective deep placentation may explain why a similar insult would result in different clinical presentations. The relative new categorization of the placental lesions, separating the non-infectious lesions into lesions that are consistent with maternal and fetal circulation abnormalities, and the infectious lesions into maternal and fetal inflammatory responses, provides us an additional tool to determine the placental maternal and fetal role in the various pregnancy complications. The Importance of Motherhood for Early Maternal Bonding and Engagement.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal perceptions about the importance of motherhood have been found to impact a variety of maternal well-being outcomes, but the impact of the importance of motherhood for the early maternal bonding relationship and on caregiving behaviors has not been explored. Examining attitudinal factors associated with maternal-infant bonding or early caregiving behaviors is essential for the development of effective interventions. METHODS: Using a clinic-based, urban sample of predominately low-income and diverse pregnant women (N = 177), we used hierarchical linear regression analysis
