Vitamin D deficiency and associated factors among cardiology patients in Nouakchott, Mauritania: A cross-sectional study using modified Poisson regression.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and identify associated demographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors among cardiology patients at the National Cardiology Center in Nouakchott, Mauritania. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 170 cardiology patients, with vitamin D status assessed using serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations (deficiency: <20 ng/mL). We used modified Poisson regression with robust (sandwich) variance estimators to directly estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals. Univariable and multivariable analyses iden

Quantile regression application to identify key determinants of malnutrition in five West African countries of Gabon, Gambia, Liberia, Mauritania, and Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition remains one of the most pressing health challenges, particularly in developing nations across Africa, placing a significant burden on both public health agencies and the affected countries. In countries such as Gabon, Gambia, Mauritania, Liberia, and Nigeria, the burden of malnutrition exacerbates public health systems, strains economic resources, and hinders sustainable development, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts at national and international levels. This study aimed to determine the scope and underlying factors contributing to the elevated incid

Local drivers of Rift Valley fever outbreaks in Mauritania: A one health approach combining ecological, vector, host and livestock movement data.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease with recurrent epidemic and epizootic outbreaks in Mauritania caused by the RVF virus (RVFV). In recent years, outbreaks have occurred with increasingly shorter inter-epidemic periods. The primary objective of this study was to utilise a high-resolution spatiotemporal model and identify the drivers and ecological suitability for RVFV infections, as well as areas for RVF outbreaks and emergence in humans and animals, respectively, in Mauritania. We used geolocated data from 2019 to 2023 for modelling, including human RVF cases confirmed

First report of kdr mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene in the arbovirus vector, Aedes aegypti, from Nouakchott, Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Since 2014, dengue epidemics have occurred almost annually in Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania, coinciding with the recent establishment of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue, in the city. Anopheles arabiensis, the primary vector of malaria, is also abundant not only in Nouakchott but also in most areas of the country. Resistance to insecticides has been studied in An. arabiensis but not in Ae. aegypti in Mauritania. The objective of the present study was to establish the baseline data on the frequencies of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the voltage-gate

[Comparison of the efficacy and safety of praziquantel administered in single dose of 40 versus 60 mg/kg for treating urinary schistosomiasis in Mauritania].

During the last twenty years, praziquantel (PZQ) was the drug of choice for the treatment of schistosomiasis in the majority of national programs. However, a lower rate of cure had been significantly noted on the left bank of the Senegal River. To explain this unusual rate of cure, the assumption of a possible resistance to the drug as well as under-dosing was considered. With an aim of testing this hypothesis of underdosing, we compared the amount of a single dose of 60 mg/kg of PZQ versus the standardized dose of 40 mg/kg used in curing urinary schistosomiasis in Mauritania. One hundred and

Schistosoma haematobium infection in Mauritania: two years of follow-up after a targeted chemotherapy--a life-table approach of the risk of reinfection.

Reinfection pattern among 6- to 20-year-old subjects was studied over 24 months in two Mauritanian villages of intense Schistosoma haematobium infection after a targeted chemotherapy with praziquantel involving the whole community. Subjects received treatment according to the presence of haematuria/proteinuria and this indirect screening technique was able to identify 98-100% of the heavily infected subjects (50 + eggs/10 ml). The two villages differed with respect to their characteristics, quality of follow-up and reinfection pattern. The post-treatment 6-month cumulative incidence during the

[Trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi (Steel 1885), Balbiani 1888 in small ruminants in Mauritania: results of experimental inoculation and field surveys].

In order to define the eventual role of small ruminants in the epidemiology of T. evansi infection in Southern Mauritania, the following experiments were carried out: the intravenous inoculation of a ewe and a goat with a local strain of T. evansi isolated from a dairy camel; surveys of small ruminant flocks which graze with infected camels in the South of the Trarza region. The experimental inoculation allowed to show that local sheep and goats are receptive. Only the ewe showed a clinical episode with loss of weight and abortion. During 220 days after inoculation the blood of the goat remain

[Camel trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi (Steel 1885), Balbiani 1888, in Islamic Republic of Mauritania: results of surveys in the Trarza region].

A first survey concerning camel trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma evansi was carried out in the Trarza region (south-western Mauritania). Blood smears were made from 218 animals and 160 were submitted to an indirect immunofluorescence test. Young calves below one year old seem to be free of T. evansi infection, while in dairy females, average rates of infection of 7.3% (blood smears) and 24.5% (serological results) were found. The type of herd management seems to be an important risk factor: the herds that frequent, even temporarily, the wooded areas of the Senegal river valley or permanent w

Amplicon-based DNA sequencing to characterize Duffy antigen polymorphisms and analysis of Duffy blood system and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Both Duffy blood antigen expression and G6PD deficiency are known to be associated with ethnic origin. Updates in epidemiological data on the prevalence of polymorphisms in these two human genes are key information for guiding national programs to eliminate Plasmodium vivax malaria. METHODS: Duffy genotypes and their predicted phenotypes were determined in 943 blood samples from Mauritanian patients belonging to different ethnic groups (n = 432 White Moors and n = 511 individuals of black African ancestry) with a known G6PD genotype determined by PCR-restriction fragment length po

Combined eco-epidemiological and molecular biology approaches to assess Echinococcus granulosus transmission to humans in Mauritania: occurrence of the 'camel' strain and human cystic echinococcosis.

Mauritania lies between West-Central Africa where human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is considered extremely rare and West Maghreb where CE accounts for a real public health problem. Until 1992, Mauritania was considered as human CE-free even through CE seemed well known in livestock. In 1992, the introduction of ultrasonography led to the diagnosis of the first human CE cases. In 1997, a veterinary study revealed that dogs living around Nouakchott were commonly infected by Echinococcus granulosus. To assess E. granulosus transmission and to identify the most relevant animal reservoir responsibl

Assessment of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity using CareStart G6PD rapid diagnostic test and associated genetic variants in Plasmodium vivax malaria endemic setting in Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Primaquine is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for radical treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria. This drug is known to provoke acute hemolytic anemia in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Due to lack of data on G6PD deficiency, the use of primaquine has been limited in Africa. In the present study, G6PD deficiency was investigated in blood donors of various ethnic groups living in Nouakchott, a P. vivax endemic area in Mauritania. A multicentre randomized controlled trial of the efficacy and safety of single-dose praziquantel at 40 mg/kg vs. 60 mg/kg for treating intestinal schistosomiasis in the Philippines, Mauritania, Tanzania and Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Praziquantel at 40 mg/kg in a single dose is the WHO recommended treatment for all forms of schistosomiasis, but 60 mg/kg is also deployed nationally. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Four trial sites in the Philippines, Mauritania, Tanzania and Brazil enrolled 856 patients using a common protocol, who were randomised to receive praziquantel 40 mg/kg (n  =  428) or 60 mg/kg (n  =  428). While the sites differed for transmission and infection intensities (highest in Tanzania and lowest in Mauritania), no bias or heterogeneity across sites was detected for the main efficacy outcomes.
