Management of a large frontoethmoid osteoma with sinus cranialization and cranial bone graft reconstruction.

Osteoma represents the most common benign neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The etiology of osteomas is uncertain and the majority occur in the frontal. ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses in that order. We present a 14-year-old male with a large frontoethmoid osteoma that required frontal sinus cranialization and pericranial bone graft reconstruction following removal. The osteoma recurred 6 months postoperatively and was excised. Treatment alternatives and a review of the literature are presented.

The first case of myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma affecting the maxillary bone.

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS) is rare and malignant soft-tissue neoplasms that typically present in the extremities. In the literature, MIFS has been reported in the groin, back, neck, nose, and temporal regions in addition to the extremities. We report a case of MIFS presenting with the complaints of nasal bleeding, purulent nasal discharge, and swelling on the right side of his face. Polypoid tissues protruded from the middle meatus were observed and initial diagnosis was inverted papilloma. The painless tumor was initially mistaken for low-grade myxofibrosarcoma in biopsy. Ma

[Double-way endoscopic surgery in a patient with cystic degeneration of maxillary sinus ossifying fibroma: a case report].

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament and with a potential to form fibrous tissue, cementum and bone, which is usually in molar area of the mandible, predominantly seen in young girls. And ossifying fibroma poses diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties due to their clinical, radiological and histological variabilities. We report a rare case of an 18 year old girl with cystic degeneration of ossifying fibroma in maxilla which is an uncommon site of occurrence.

Fibrous histiocytoma of orbit: a case report.

A fifty year male (K.S.) presented with protrusion (Proptosis) of left eye which was gradually increasing in size for the last one year. The swelling was accompanied by pain for the last fifteen days. Preoperative X-ray & computed tomography showed erosion of frontal sinus & roof of maxillary sinus. Clinical diagnosis of a malignant tumour of eye was made & enucleation of the left eye, along with the mass was done. The specimen was received in the pathology department on 16.9.98. Grossly, encapsulated mass attached with the intact eye ball was received. The mass measured 5x3x2.5 cms. Microscop

Unilateral Maxillary Sinus Plasmablastic Lymphoma in an Immunocompetent Patient. An Unusual Occurrence Report and Literature Review.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive form of mature B cell neoplasms almost exclusively identified in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The small number of HIV-negative PBL cases reported in the literature to date is composed of single case reports and small case series which characteristically are present involving the oral cavity mucosa or gingiva. We present a 72-year-old HIV-negative Australian patient without any cause of immunodeficiency, with an isolated left maxillary sinus PBL.

Does evaluation of tumor volume or/both origination site better guide to optimal surgery for inverted papilloma?

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. METHODS: Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the maxillary sinus: A case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are one of the most complex and rare neoplasms that have been discovered, with varying behavior in different cases. They mostly arise in the thoracic and abdominal cavity, the lungs, retroperitoneum, and extremities. They can also be detected in the head and neck area. IMTs have no age or gender preference which makes them tougher to anticipate. Head and neck IMTs are benign neoplasms with locally aggressive behavior and a low risk of metastatic spread. They have an unknown etiology, and they resemble malignant lesions radiologically. In this case rep

Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal cancer extending to maxillary sinus: a case report.

Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal cancer of the cavum (UCNT) is the most frequent neoplasm of the nasopharynx, having a close relationship with exposure to Epstein-Barr virus. It has a high potential for locoregional or distant invasion which are the cause of some treatment failures. The extension to the maxillary sinus is rarely described. We report here the case of a 38-year-old patient with headaches associated with epistaxis, left otalgia and facial pain. Examination by anterior rhinoscopy objectively revealed a polylobed ulcerating mass. Otoscopic examination revealed a left seromucous otit

Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy in recurrent maxillary sinus inverted papilloma.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is the most common, globally detected nosocomial fungal pathogen with multi-drug resistance. The high prevalence of C. auris infections has raised concern about drug resistance and adverse effects, compounded by a lack of effective alternative drugs. Bioengineered nanomaterials play a significant role in combating nosocomial infections. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as an extensively used nanomaterial due to their prominent antimicrobial properties. One of the most promising approaches is to incorporate herbal extracts that contain a range of phytoconstitu

[Immunohistochemical detection and ultrastructural features of solitary plasmacytoma of maxillary bone--case presentation].

Plasma cell neoplasm have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma and extramedullary plasmacytoma. The solitary plasmacytoma of maxilla is a rare condition. It is a single focus of myelomatous tissue with no dissemination to other parts of the skeleton. This paper presents a case of solitary plasmacytoma in the maxillary bone. Roentgenographic examination revealed a cystic-like osteolytic lesion over the left posterior portion of maxillary bone, invading maxillary sinus. The CT scan showed the tumor mass occupied the left maxillary sinus and lateral wall of the nasal cavity,

Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (lymphoepithelioma) is a neoplasm that may be found in nasopharynx, nasal fossae, maxillary sinus, base of the tongue, tonsil, thymus and parapharyngeal area. Such a tumor is extremely rare in the hypopharynx and the case described is the second so far reported in the world literature, after the first case by Dockerty et al. (1968). The tumor is morphologically identical to those arising in other organs. Our patient died ten months after diagnosis.

Oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with severe alveolar bone loss: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: In AIDS patients who present with an oral neoplasm, Kaposi sarcoma is the tumor most frequently encountered, comprising 50% to 80% of all tumor occurrences. However, oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with erosion of underlying bone is a relatively rare finding. This report and review of the literature documents a case of AIDS-related oral Kaposi sarcoma exhibiting severe bilateral erosion of the maxillary alveolar ridges. METHODS: An HIV-seropositive male with extensive maxillary Kaposi sarcoma and associated bilateral alveolar bone erosion presented for dental evaluation subsequent

Hodgkin lymphoma of the maxillary sinus: an unusual occurrence.

The maxillary sinus is a rare anatomic site for Hodgkin lymphoma, as only 1 such case has been previously reported in the literature. Nevertheless, we recommend that lymphoma be considered in the differential diagnosis of a mass that involves the maxillary sinus or any other unusual extranodal site in the head and neck. Lymphoma in a patient who presents with disease in an unusual site and without lymphadenopathy is difficult to diagnose. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with nasal congestion and obstruction. Examination revealed an abnormal-appearing mucosa involving th

The opacified maxillary sinus: CT findings in chronic sinusitis and malignant tumors.

To distinguish opacification owing to inflammatory conditions (sinusitis) from that caused by nasomaxillary malignancy, computed tomography scans in 24 proved cases of sinusitis or tumor were reviewed for features related to sinus size, wall thickness, and character of bone erosion. An anatomic system was defined for classifying lesions according to the surface and type of bony involvement. In 12 cases of chronic maxillary sinusitis, the involved sinus was usually small and thick walled. The nasal surface of the involved sinus usually was eroded; often the orbital surface was eroded. The erosi

Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy for a mixed maxillary inverted papilloma and mycetoma with absent prelacrimal recess.

Endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach is a promising technique for treating various maxillary sinus diseases because it allows for adequate visualization and wide access to the entire maxillary sinus. However, the incidence of absent prelacrimal recess (PLR) has ranged from 7% to 17.5%, implying that there is a limitation for the application of EPLA in this population. Here, a male patient with concomitant Krouse T2 maxillary inverted papilloma and mycetoma presenting with unilateral nasal obstruction and blood-tinged secretion is described. The presurgical computed tomography showed no reces

[The paranasal sinuses as metastatic site of renal cell carcinoma].

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors very seldom establish metastasis in the paranasal sinuses. Renal cell carcinomas (RCC) are one of the possible primary tumors displaying metastases in this location. The incidence of metastasis from the renal cell carcinoma in the paranasal sinuses is higher as would be expected by the incidence of this tumor. PATIENTS: We report here about 3 patients from the ENT clinic with metastasis in the paranasal sinus derived from primary RCC. Two of them showed metastases in the maxillary sinus and the third patient had a metastasis in the sphenoid sinus. RESULTS AND CON
