KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: The phenomenon of vessel pedicle ossification is a noteworthy aspect of the repair and reconstruction of maxillofacial defects. Imaging findings typically reveal high-density shadows within the vascular pedicle pathway, which may be managed through conservative observation or surgical intervention as deemed appropriate.
ABSTRACT: Vessel pedicle ossification is a relatively uncommon complication associated with the reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial tissue defects using free tissue flap repair. In this paper, we report a case of pedicle ossification and conduct a co

PURPOSE: Prompt recognition of cervical fractures in patients with facial fractures is of prime importance, as failure to diagnose such injuries carries a significant risk of causing neurologic abnormalities, long-term disabilities, and even death. The aim of this retrospective case study is to describe the different patterns of combinations of maxillofacial and cervical spine (C-spine) injuries to provide guidance in diagnosis and care of patients with combined injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The trauma directory of 1 academic institution was searched for records of 701 patients admitted wit

BACKGROUND: Oblique facial clefts, also known as Tessier clefts, are severe orofacial clefts, the genetic basis of which is poorly understood. Human genetics studies revealed that disruption in SPECC1L resulted in oblique facial clefts, demonstrating that oblique facial cleft malformation has a genetic basis. An important step toward innovation in treatment of oblique facial clefts would be improved understanding of its genetic pathogenesis. The authors exploit the zebrafish model to elucidate the function of SPECC1L by studying its homolog, specc1lb.
METHODS: Gene and protein expression anal

The medical profession today, has the choice of many imaging techniques for documenting, investigating, assessing or planning treatment. Amongst them, the laser surface imaging system is emerging as a useful tool to capture and store digital data for reformatting into a three-dimensional computer model. The laser scanning system captures only the surface morphology of a subject, and is highly appropriate for the evaluation of surface morphological changes of craniofacial disorders. Although originally acquired for the study of facial anthropometry, many other clinical uses have been found for

Orofacial digital syndromes are a heterogeneous group of rare malformative diseases, characterised by abnormalities of the oral cavity, maxillofacial region and digits. Orofacial digital syndromes are classified into ten types with orofacial digital syndrome type II, Mohr's syndrome being transmitted as autosomal recessive disorder. Here a case of a full term, female, born by lower segment caesarean section weighing 2.800 kg with respiratory distress, cyanosis, poly and syndactyly is reported.

Pyknodysostosis is an autosomal-recessive disorder of osteoclast dysfunction causing osteosclerosis, with associated maxillofacial anomalies. Multidetector CT with multiplanar and 3D reconstruction illustrated the pathologic findings in this case. Abnormalities included multiple retained deciduous teeth, unerupted teeth with associated follicles, an irregularly expanded alveolus and body of the mandible, and an obtuse mandibular angle. Volume-rendered imaging better delineated the irregular dentition, with crowding and retention of deciduous teeth.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease characterized by the degeneration of alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord, resulting in progressive proximal muscle weakness and paralysis. SMA is classified into types I-IV based on the age at symptom onset or maximum motor function achieved, and its clinical manifestations vary. SMA affects maxillofacial growth because of muscle dysfunction and results in abnormal maxillofacial morphology. In addition, definitive diagnosis is not often made because of the older onset age and symptoms are rarely severe. Therefore,

BACKGROUND: Dento-maxillofacial deformities are common problems. Orthodontic-orthognathic surgery is the primary treatment but accurate diagnosis and careful surgical planning are essential for optimum outcomes. This study aimed to establish and verify a machine learning-based decision support system for treatment of dento-maxillofacial malformations.
METHODS: Patients (n = 574) with dento-maxillofacial deformities undergoing spiral CT during January 2015 to August 2020 were enrolled to train diagnostic models based on five different machine learning algorithms; the diagnostic performances we

One of the most common causes of short stature is a defect of the short stature homeobox-containing (SHOX) gene, which is located in pseudoautosomal region 1 on the distal end of the short arm of chromosomes Xp22.33 and Yp11.32. More than 300 different mutations in the SHOX gene responsible for short stature syndrome have been described. The phenotypic expression of SHOX haploinsufficiency is remarkably varied. The 3 typical clinical presentations, from least to most severe, are idiopathic short stature without skeletal malformations, Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD), and Langer mesomelic dy

Among the rarest of the craniofacial clefts is the Tessier no. 4 cleft; and hence little has been published about its management and treatment. Complete forms of the cleft yield poor surgical results because of the shortened oculoalar and oculo-oral distance and inadequate soft and bony tissue. Multiple sequential corrective operations are required. A primary early concern is the protection of the eye, particularly in severe forms in which corneal exposure occurs. This article presents two cases of Tessier no. 4 clefts, one unilateral and the other bilateral, and discusses the problems encount

OBJECTIVE: To probe the possibility of trans-sutural distraction osteogenesis for correction of children midfacial hypoplasia.
METHODS: The trans-sutural distraction system of mid-facial skeleton consisted of the bone-borne traction hooks of titanium, the face-bow, and the elastic loops. Nine children with midfacial hypoplasia were treated at their 6 - 12 years of age. No osteotomy was made in them. Bone holes were drilled with a dental bur at each side of the lateral-inferior rim of the aperture, or at the anterior part of the hard palate. The traction device was hatched to the holes through

Gardner syndrome is a hereditary disease in which patients develop gastrointestinal polyps, osteomas, desmoid tumors, epidermoid cysts, fibromas, lipomas, and retinal lesions. Dental abnormalities such as supernumerary or impacted teeth, odontomas and dentigerous cysts are also reported. The most serious concern in this syndrome is the extremely high risk of gastrointestinal polyps undergoing malignant transformation. Since the maxillofacial findings usually precede gastrointestinal polyps, the dentist plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of Gardner syndrome, and panoramic radiography is an i
