Tetracycline antibiotics in hospital and municipal wastewaters: a pilot study in Portugal.

This study investigated the occurrence of tetracyclines (TCs), namely minocycline (MIN), TC, and its epimer epitetracycline (ETC), and doxycycline (DC), in four hospital wastewater effluents and its fate in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in Coimbra, Portugal. Analytical determination was carried out by solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. A gradient system with a mobile phase containing oxalic acid 0.02 M and acetonitrile was used. After postcolumn derivatization with magnesium reagent, TCs were detected at lambda(exc) 386 nm and

Mass flows of X-ray contrast media and cytostatics in hospital wastewater.

Little is known about the significance of hospitals as point sources for emission of organic micropollutants into the aquatic environment. A mass flow analysis of pharmaceuticals and diagnostics used in hospitals was performed on the site of a representative Swiss cantonal hospital. Specifically, we analyzed the consumption of iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) and cytostatics in their corresponding medical applications of radiology and oncology, respectively, and their discharge into hospital wastewater and eventually into the wastewater of the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Emission

Survey of Antimicrobial-Resistant Bacteria Isolated from Rivers in Japan, Indonesia and Nepal.

The threat of antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments, particularly riverine systems, is escalating, in part due to effluents discharged from healthcare facilities. This issue has been recognized not only in Japan but also in other Asian countries such as Indonesia and Nepal. Nevertheless, existing research remains limited, prompting an investigation into the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the upstream and downstream sites of environmental rivers. In 2024, six samples were collected from three rivers in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan; five samples from five river sites in

Green nephrology: water and waste - one year in a hemodialysis unit in Northeastern Brazil and reassessment of dialyzer reprocessing from an environmental perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Hemodialysis is one of the most water-intensive and waste-generating therapies in health care, yet its environmental impact remains poorly documented in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate water consumption and solid waste generation in a hemodialysis unit in northeastern Brazil that reprocesses dialyzers, comparing the observed scenario with an estimated counterfactual single-use scenario. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study. Aggregate institutional data on water consumption, supply procurement, and waste mass were ana

Think before you flush! A sustainable aquatic eco-system's relation to human health.

What we do every day at work and in our home lives can make a difference in the quality of our environment. Consider, for example, the flushing of pharmaceuticals into the sewer system can lead to water pollution resulting in a threat to aquatic and human life. In contrast, keeping aquatic life healthy may contribute to human health. Some aquatic-based medications are currently on the market. Others are in various stages of development. In this article the authors argue that, for the benefit of both human and marine life, it is time to implement safer disposal methods for unwanted medications.

Effect of chlorine content in feeding wastes of incineration on the emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans.

This study attempts to clarify the effects of chlorine content in waste on the formation mechanisms of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in full scale incinerators by proposing and using the principal component analysis (PCA) to compare the congener profiles of PCDD/Fs in the stack flue gases of 17 emission sources, including incinerators and vehicles. Four incinerators, among these 17 emission sources, were sampled and analyzed in this study, and the data for the other 13 emission sources were selected from previous studies. These 17 emission sources can be classif

Interobserver Agreement on Clinical Judgment of Work of Breathing in Spontaneously Breathing Children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The U.S. healthcare system generates more than five billion pounds of waste each year. Waste disposal has become a serious environmental problem facing healthcare institutions. The operating room is the second largest source of hospital waste, and no current standards exist regarding perfusion waste reuse or recycling. A typical perfusion circuit produces approximately 15 pounds of plastic that ends up incinerated once used. Contaminated perfusion circuits consisting primarily of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polycarbonate are difficult to sterilize, reuse, or recycle. A literature review of In

Public knowledge and practices toward safe disposal of unused and expired medications in Palestine: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Improper disposal of unused and expired medications poses significant health and environmental risks worldwide, especially in resource-limited and conflict-affected settings where pharmaceutical waste management infrastructure is lacking and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising. Population-level data from fragile healthcare systems in the Middle East are scarce. This study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to medication disposal among Palestinian adults in a setting without formal take-back programs or national disposal guidelines, and analyzed behavior

Practice, awareness and opinion of pharmacists toward disposal of unwanted medications in Kuwait.

BACKGROUND: The disposal of unwanted medications has been a concern in many countries, as pharmaceutical waste enters the ecosystem, ultimately having an effect on human health and environment. Earlier studies in Kuwait found that the method of disposal by the public was by disposing in the garbage or by flushing down the drain. In accordance with patient preference and environment safety, it would be appropriate to use local government pharmacies as collection points for proper disposal. OBJECTIVE: To determine the practice of pharmacists, working in government healthcare sectors, with regar

[Quality of the water and public health in the Central American isthmus].

As of December 1970 the population of the Central American Isthmus was 16,436,723; 6,225,447 (37.9%) urban and 10,210,946 (62.1%) rural. Of the urban population, 63.3%, or 3,964,611 had water in the home, while 2,283,836 (36.7% had no adequate water supply. The problem is even worse in the rural population where only 732,150 inhabitants (7.17%) had water in the home; the rest, 9,500,000 were using water from contaminated rivers, streams, wells, etc. These low percentages do not meet the standards proposed at Punta del Este, Uruguay in 1961 of providing drinking water to 70% of the urban popula

Medical surveillance for hazardous waste workers.

The efforts to clean up hazardous waste disposal sites have led to an increasing number of workers involved in these activities. Industrial hygiene surveys have demonstrated that these workers are potentially exposed to low levels of multiple contaminants during the work day and to high levels of some contaminants for very short time periods. Personal protective equipment and work practices are important components in protecting workers from these exposures. Medical monitoring for these workers is problematic. While monitoring for the potential health effects of these multiple exposures may be

An assessment of hospital wastewater and biomedical waste generation, existing legislations, risk assessment, treatment processes, and scenario during COVID-19.

Hospitals release significant quantities of wastewater (HWW) and biomedical waste (BMW), which hosts a wide range of contaminants that can adversely affect the environment if left untreated. The COVID-19 outbreak has further increased hospital waste generation over the past two years. In this context, a thorough literature study was carried out to reveal the negative implications of untreated hospital waste and delineate the proper ways to handle them. Conventional treatment methods can remove only 50%-70% of the emerging contaminants (ECs) present in the HWW. Still, many countries have not im

Health hazards in drawing and painting.

Most health hazards in drawing and painting fall into two primary categories: volatile organic solvents used in many painting mediums and fixatives for dry drawing mediums; and respirable powders and dusts such as powdered pigments and dyes, which may be toxic and/or suspected or known carcinogens. User safeguards, such as appropriate ventilation and protective attire, and protection of the environment through careful emission and waste disposal, can be readily implemented with the education of artists and their employers. This chapter succinctly outlines the risk factors, symptomatology, and

The Financial and Environmental Cost of Anaesthetic Emergency Drugs: Comparing Ampoules With Prefilled Syringes.

Introduction Anaesthetic emergency drugs are essential for safe practice; however, when prepared from ampoules, they are frequently wasted when unused. Prefilled syringes (PFS) may reduce waste as they can be opened at the point of use. Additional benefits may include reducing medication errors and saving clinician time, although higher initial purchasing costs have been a barrier to universal adoption across the NHS. We undertook two quality improvement cycles to quantify the use and waste of anaesthetic emergency drugs before and after transitioning from ampoules to PFS for metaraminol, ephe
