It is well documented that many individuals endorse the belief that alcohol reduces social anxiety. Individuals with social phobia, therefore, might be expected to use alcohol as a coping strategy in an attempt at self-medication. The purpose of the present paper was to review the published literature on the relationship between alcohol use and social phobia to test the self-medication hypothesis (SMH). Support for one aspect of the SMH was found; individuals with social phobia use alcohol to reduce anxiety. Support for the second premise, that alcohol actually reduces social anxiety, was less

OBJECTIVE: Nonadherence to tuberculosis (pulmonary TB) medication poses a serious threat to the increase in new cases, prevention of transmission, and control of pulmonary TB. The health behavior of patients with pulmonary TB regarding medication adherence is an extremely important issue to investigate. This review aimed to identify the available literature on professional interventions and important determinants for improving adherence to pulmonary TB medication based on a health belief model (HBM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify the determinants and professional treatment outcomes that

PURPOSE: Multi-professional medication reviews (MPMRs) are structured, collaborative processes designed to optimize medication management and promote evidence-based practice. Yet, their impact in psychiatric settings remains understudied. This study aimed to retrospectively assess the impact of hospital-based MPMRs on medication prescriptions in psychiatric inpatients.
METHODS: An observational, retrospective, pre-post study in four psychiatric wards of a French university hospital was conducted. Participants had two hospital stays: one before and one after MPMR implementation (August 2017-De

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious adverse event that occurs in patients treated with certain medications, leading to a major side effect that can result in substantial morbidity. MRONJ is known to be associated with antiresorptive (AR) and antiangiogenic (AA) medicines, but recent evidence suggests that other medications may also be involved. Recognizing a broad range of drug-induced risk factors is important, notably in light of the increasing number of drugs associated with MRONJ. The primary objective of this review is to update and synthesize findings from th

Hospital admission is high risk for medication harm due to transfer errors, delays, and charting mistakes. Up to 70% of admission medication lists contain errors, 59% potentially harmful, highlighting the need for safety strategies. The aim of the study is to systematically review the effectiveness of strategies for medication management at hospital admission. Following PRISMA guideline, three databases were searched for RCTs. Subgroup analyses assessed outcomes including mortality, readmissions/Emergency Department (ED) visits, length of stay (LOS), medication errors, and adverse drug events

Polypharmacy in older adults is common, rising and inconsistently defined, and it is widely treated as a problem of how many medicines a person takes. This non-systematic narrative review argues that its harm depends more on the appropriateness of the regimen and the pharmacological burden the regimen imposes, with the number of drugs a partly confounded marker rather than the principal cause. Drawing on evidence published mainly since 2020, it traces the shift from counting medicines to weighting them; the prescribing cascade as a patterned and detectable source of inappropriate use; the expl

BACKGROUND: Initiation of medication, or the first step in adherence, is a critical determinant of pharmacotherapy success in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, inconsistencies in defining and measuring initiation pose challenges in understanding its impact on patient outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to systematically assess the definitions, operationalization, and measurement of initial medication adherence (IMA) among patients with MDD.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and PsycInfo from inception to March 2025. Studies were incl

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of treatment strategies for medication-overuse headache (MOH) in children and adolescents.
BACKGROUND: There are no guidelines for the treatment of adult or pediatric patients with MOH. However, research pertaining to MOH in adults is far outpacing research in children and adolescents.
METHODS: A systematic review of evidence on treatment for MOH in children and adolescents was performed via PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Cochrane from database inception to October 2024 for articles with the subject headings and keywords for MOH and pedi

The concept of the second victim, described as the sense of victimization of health care professionals following the exposure to a traumatic, unanticipated medical error, was first introduced in 2000 by Albert W. Wu. Since then, the concept has gained immense traction and inspired the generation of assistance programs for second victims. With most second victim occurrences resulting from medication errors, pediatric pharmacists are at a high risk of experiencing second victim phenomenon. Second victims may experience both psychological and physical symptoms of distress often akin to post-traum

PROBLEM: Many children with epilepsy face challenges in adhering to their medication, leading to inadequate seizure control. However, the most effective intervention is still unclear. This integrative review's main goal was to examine and synthesize the existing literature on interventions for promoting medication adherence in children with epilepsy.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This integrative review followed Whittemore and Knafl's five-stage framework. Four electronic databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and CINAHL Complete) were systematically searched from 2013 until 2024 to identify eligi

OBJECTIVE: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe drug-related side effect mostly seen in the maxillofacial region of patients under current or previous treatment with antiresorptive and/or angiogenic agents. There is a wide range of treatment options explained in literature for the management of this condition, from conservative treatments to surgical procedures of various levels of invasiveness, which are sometimes supplemented with adjunctive therapies. The present systematic review aimed at evaluating the treatment options of MRONJ in terms of successful outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Personalized medicine aims to identify which characteristics of an individual predict the outcome of a specific treatment, in order to get a better match between the individual and the treatment received. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials comparing two treatments directly in a group of patients with a specific characteristic.
METHODS: We searched relevant studies from bibliographical databases and included trials comparing (1) medication with psychotherapy, (2) medication with combined treatment, and (3) psychotherapy with combined treatment,

BACKGROUND: Functional status is the cornerstone of geriatric care and serves as an indicator of general well-being. A decline in function can increase health care use, worsen quality of life, threaten independence, and increase the risk of mortality. One of several risk factors for decline in functional status is medication use.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to critically review published articles that have examined the relationship between medication use and functional status decline in the elderly.
METHODS: The MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for English-language articles published fr
