Citral-Containing Essential Oils as Potential Tyrosinase Inhibitors: A Bio-Guided Fractionation Approach.

Excessive melanin production causes serious dermatological conditions as well as minor aesthetic problems (i.e., freckles and solar lentigo). The downregulation of tyrosinase is a widespread approach for the treatment of such disorders, and plant extracts have often proven to be valuable sources of tyrosinase inhibitors. Citral (a mixture of neral and geranial) is an important fragrance ingredient that has shown anti-tyrosinase potential. It is highly concentrated in the essential oils (EOs) of Cymbopogon schoenanthus (L.) Spreng., Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers., Melissa officinalis L., and Verbe

Essential Oils as Treatment Strategy for Alzheimer's Disease: Current and Future Perspectives.

Alzheimer's disease is a multifarious neurodegenerative disease that causes cognitive impairment and gradual memory loss. Several hypotheses have been put forward to postulate its pathophysiology. Currently, few drugs are available for the management of Alzheimer's disease and the treatment provides only symptomatic relief. Our aim is to review the relevant in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies focused toward the potential uses of essential oils in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Scientific databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar from April 1998 to June 2018

Identification of antitumoral agents against human pancreatic cancer cells from Asteraceae and Lamiaceae plant extracts.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and mortal cancers. Although several drugs have been proposed for its treatment, it remains resistant and new alternatives are needed. In this context, plants and their derivatives constitute a relevant source of bioactive components which might efficiently inhibit tumor cell progression. METHODS: In this study, we have analyzed the potential anti-carcinogenic effect of different Asteraceae (Achillea millefolium and Calendula officinalis) and Lamiaceae (Melissa officinalis and Origanum majorana) plant extracts obtained by different g

Microemulsions of Essential Oils: Characterization and Phase Behavior.

Essential oils are a key ingredient in foods, beverages, and personal- and home-care products due to their flavors, scents, and various biological activities. This study investigates the capacity of polysorbate 60 (PS60) micelles to solubilize eight essential oils classified into two groups based on their composition. The first group (tea tree, rose, lavender, and melissa oils) contains more than 40% polar aliphatic or alicyclic alcohols or aldehydes, whereas the oils from the second group (chamomile, yarrow, lemon, and orange oils) contain less than 20% of these compounds. The efficient solub

Phylogenetically distant enzymes localized in cytosol and plastids drive citral biosynthesis in lemongrass.

Citral, a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpene aldehyde, is present in the essential oils of various plants, but only a few produce it in abundance. Despite its importance as a key aroma molecule, knowledge regarding the in-planta biosynthesis of citral and its metabolic origin remains limited. Here, we have elucidated the functions of an alcohol dehydrogenase (CfADH1) and an aldoketo-reductase (CfAKR2b) in citral biosynthesis in lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), one of the most cultivated aromatic crops for its citral-rich essential oil. Expression of both CfADH1 and CfAKR2b showed correl

Investigating mental simulation during sentence comprehension in aphantasia.

Aphantasia is a condition in which individuals do not consciously experience visual imagery. There is ongoing debate concerning whether language comprehension involves visual imagery or only unconscious mental simulation (modality-specific perceptual reactivation). To test this directly, we investigated mental simulation during sentence comprehension in a group of individuals with aphantasia. We compared aphantasics to controls on their response time and accuracy on a sentence-picture verification task. In two experiments, participants read sentences (e.g., Melissa's dog was hard to find in th

Rosmarinic acid: a new inhibitor of complement C3-convertase with anti-inflammatory activity.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a naturally occurring compound, isolated from Rosmarinus officinalis or Melissa officinalis which inhibits the in vitro immunohaemolysis of antibody-coated sheep erythrocytes by guinea pig serum. In further experiments this reduced immunohaemolysis was found to be due to inhibition of the C3-convertase of the classical complement pathway. The threshold concentration for inhibition of C3-convertase was 10(-6) mol/l. RA with an optimal inhibitory concentration between 5 and 10 mumol/l., resulting in about 70% inhibition of haemolysis. However, higher concentrations of RA

Pathophysiology of diabetic hepatopathy and molecular mechanisms underlying the hepatoprotective effects of phytochemicals.

Patients with diabetes are at risk for liver disorders including glycogen hepatopathy, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatic fibrosis. The pathophysiological mechanisms behind diabetic hepatopathy are complex, some of them include fatty acid accumulation, increased reactive oxygen species, increased advanced glycation end-products, hyperactivity of polyol pathways, increased apoptosis and necrosis, and promotion of fibrosis. A growing number of studies have shown that herbal extracts and their active phytochemicals have antihyperglycemic properties and beneficial effects on

[Research progress on Parkinson's disease treatment with traditional Chinese medicine via regulating Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway].

Parkinson's disease(PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and the accumulation of Lewy bodies. While conventional drugs like levodopa can improve early symptoms, their efficacy diminishes over time, and they may cause severe side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), with its multi-target therapeutic approach, has shown unique advantages in PD treatment, particularly in slowing disease progression and improving clinical symptoms. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)/heme oxygenase
