Intermediary roles of prospective memory and retrospective memory in the comorbidity of depression and pain.

BACKGROUND: Patients who suffer comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic pain (CP) maintain a complex interplay between maladaptive prospective memory (PM) and retrospective memory (RM) with physical pain, and their complications are still unknown. AIMS: We aimed to focus on the full cognitive performance and memory complaints in patients with MDD and CP, patients with depression without CP, and control subjects, considering the possible influence of depressed affect and chronic pain severity. METHODS: According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

Seeing or hearing one's memories: Manipulating autobiographical memory imagery in schizophrenia.

The prevalence of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, and theories suggesting a link between autobiographical memory and hallucination, raise the possibility of a dominant role of auditory imagery in autobiographical remembering in patients with schizophrenia, whereas visual imagery is dominant in autobiographical memory of healthy adults. The present study explored this possibility by comparing autobiographical memory characteristics, according to sensory modality, in patients with schizophrenia versus healthy controls. Twenty-eight patients and 28 matched controls were asked to retriev

Sensitivity of the test of memory and learning to attention and memory deficits in children with ADHD.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit a number of cognitive deficits. The current study compared patterns of attention, learning, and memory impairment on the Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL) between 80 children with ADHD and 80 normal comparisons who were matched for age and gender. Results demonstrated that children with ADHD performed significantly worse than matched controls on the Attention/Concentration Index and the Sequential Recall Index. ROC analysis indicated that these two indexes had good classification accuracy with AUCs of.76 and.77 respectivel

The relationship between theoretical memory psychology and art of memory: a historical analysis.

The split between the theoretical branch and the practice--oriented art of memory psychology has existed for centuries. Whereas the theory of memory involved creation of elaborate models to elucidate the structure and processes of memory, in contrast the art of memory embraced techniques to enhance memory performance. One might expect a close relationship between practice and theory. This is, however, not the case. Theorists and memory artists criticized, fought, or ignored each other, as is demonstrated by examples from the 16th to the 19th century.

Memory for what it is and memory for what it means: a single case of Korsakoff's amnesia.

A single case of Korsakoff's syndrome, showing classic circumscribed amnesia on traditional neuropsychological tests, performed a number of learning tasks previously used in primates to demonstrate the different anatomical basis of memory systems used to learn about the properties of objects or to learn about rules of responding. The patient (CJ) performed in a manner very similar to lesioned monkeys in that he could learn evaluative tasks (e.g. a red object is nice), but not rule based tasks (e.g. a red object means go left). In consequence CJ learned an object discrimination task in a manner

On the pharmacological phenocopying of memory mutations in Drosophila: alkylxanthines accelerate memory decay.

Theophylline and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, two cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase inhibitors, when fed to wild-type Drosophila adults, cause the rapid decay of learning index after training in a shock-odor learning paradigm. The drugs practically do not affect the olfactory acuity of flies, hence they influence the learning/memory process itself. The time courses of memory decay resemble those of the memory mutants rutabaga and amnesiac and, to a lesser extent, dunce2 and dunceM11. Theophylline further deteriorates the learning performance of dunceM11. Biochemical characterization of the i

Endorsement of common memory beliefs in TikTok videos about repression, trauma, and memory.

Researchers have speculated about the role of social media in fuelling renewed interest and discourse about repressed memories. The present study examined the extent to which 394 TikTok videos related to repression, trauma, and memory explicitly endorsed eight commonly held beliefs about memory (Akhtar, S., Justice, L. V., Knott, L., Kibowski, F., & Conway, M. A. (2018). The 'common sense" memory belief system and its implications. The International Journal of Evidence & Proof, 22(3), 289-304). Videos were identified using the hashtags #dissociativeamnesia, #repressedmmemories, #repressedtraum

Memory performance, hippocampal volumes and memory fMRI in frontal versus temporal lobe epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) show an increased risk of memory impairment relative to healthy controls, alongside structural and functional encoding-related cerebral alterations. To better specify syndrome-related differences, we directly compared TLE and FLE patients. METHODS: We evaluated 56 TLE (25 right-sided) and 24 FLE patients with respect to fMRI activation during encoding of scenes, faces, and words, post-scan recognition accuracy, neuropsychological verbal and figural memory tests, and hippocampal volumes. RESULTS:

Increasing autobiographical memory specificity: Using kindness meditation to impact features of memory retrieval.

Individuals with a history of depression have an increased risk for future episodes. This risk has been linked with impaired features of autobiographical memory retrieval that remain when depressive symptoms abate, including memory specificity, remoteness, valence, and vantage perspective. Rumination has been shown to influence these impairments and can be reduced via compassion training. We therefore investigated the effects of a self-compassion meditation on autobiographical memory retrieval in remitted depression. Baseline data were collected (n = 50) using an extended version of the Autobi

Defective memory engram reactivation underlies impaired fear memory recall in Fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X chromosome-linked disease associated with severe intellectual disabilities. Previous studies using the Fmr1 knockout (KO) mouse, an FXS mouse model, have attributed behavioral deficits to synaptic dysfunctions. However, how functional deficits at neural network level lead to abnormal behavioral learning remains unexplored. Here, we show that the efficacy of hippocampal engram reactivation is reduced in Fmr1 KO mice performing contextual fear memory recall. Experiencing an enriched environment (EE) prior to learning improved the engram reactivation efficacy and

Verbal working memory and linguistic long-term memory: Exploring the lexical cohort effect.

Numerous studies have shown that verbal working memory (vWM) performance is strongly influenced by linguistic knowledge, with items more familiar at sublexical, lexical, and/or semantic levels leading to higher vWM recall performance. Among the many different psycholinguistic variables whose impact on vWM has been studied, the lexical cohort effect is one of the few effects that has not yet been explored. The lexical cohort effect reflects the fact that words sharing their first phonemes with many other words (e.g. alcove, alligator, alcohol…) are typically responded to more slowly as compared

Acute exposure to blue wavelength light during memory consolidation improves verbal memory performance.

Acute exposure to light within the blue wavelengths has been shown to enhance alertness and vigilance, and lead to improved speed on reaction time tasks, possibly due to activation of the noradrenergic system. It remains unclear, however, whether the effects of blue light extend beyond simple alertness processes to also enhance other aspects of cognition, such as memory performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a thirty minute pulse of blue light versus placebo (amber light) exposure in healthy normally rested individuals in the morning during verbal memory consolida

Drinkers' memory bias for alcohol picture cues in explicit and implicit memory tasks.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol cues can bias attention and elicit emotional reactions, especially in drinkers. Yet, little is known about how alcohol cues affect explicit and implicit memory processes, and how memory for alcohol cues is affected by acute alcohol intoxication. METHODS: Young adult participants (N=161) were randomly assigned to alcohol, placebo, or control beverage conditions. Following beverage consumption, they were shown neutral, emotional and alcohol-related pictures cues. Participants then completed free recall and repetition priming tasks to test explicit and implicit memory, respec

Chronic caffeine consumption prevents memory disturbance in different animal models of memory decline.

Caffeine, the most widely consumed psychoactive drug, enhances attention/vigilance, stabilizes mood, and might also independently enhance cognitive performance. Notably, caffeine displays clearer and more robust beneficial effects on memory performance when memory is perturbed by stressful or noxious stimuli either in human or animal studies. Thus, caffeine restores memory performance in sleep-deprived or aged human individuals, a finding replicated in rodent animal models. Likewise, in animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), caffeine alleviates memory dysfunction, which is in accordance wi

The relationship between working memory and episodic memory disorders in transient global amnesia.

In a previous study, we investigated the relationship between the disorders of both episodic memory and working memory in the acute phase of transient global amnesia (TGA). Since executive functions were spared, another dysfunction may be responsible for the binding and maintenance of multimodal informations and contribute to the encoding disorders observed in some patients [Quinette, P., Guillery, B., Desgranges, B., de la Sayette, V., Viader, F., & Eustache, F. (2003). Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia. Brain, 126, 1917-1934.]. The aim of this present study w

Modelling T-cell memory by genetic marking of memory T cells in vivo.

Immunological memory is the ability of the immune system to respond with enhanced vigour to pathogens that have been encountered in the past. Following infection or immunization, most effector T cells undergo apoptotic cell death, but a small fraction of these cells, proportional to the early antigen load and initial clonal burst size, persist in the host as a stable pool of memory T cells. The existence of immunological memory has been recognized for over 2,000 years, but our understanding of this phenomenon is limited, primarily because memory lymphocytes cannot be unequivocally identified a

Topographic amnesia: spatial memory disorder, perceptual dysfunction, or category specific semantic memory impairment?

A 60 year old patient, SE, who presented with a severe difficulty in finding his way around previously familiar environments and a mild prosopagnosia is described. SE had herpes simplex encephalitis resulting in selective right temporal lobe damage. He showed normal spatial learning, but was severely imparied in his ability to recognise pictures of buildings and landmarks. The disorder was not confined to the visual modality, but rather involved a loss of knowledge about famous buildings and landmarks when tested from their spoken name. SE was contrasted with a more severely prosopagnosic pati

Rac1 Constrains Memory Consolidation.

Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) is a small GTPase that regulates actin cytoskeleton dynamics and synaptic plasticity. Rac1 has been implicated in active forgetting, but whether it also constrains the consolidation of new memories remains unclear. Here we show that systemic administration of the Rac1 inhibitor 1A-116 after training in the novel object recognition task markedly extends memory persistence in rats. A single post-training injection of 1A-116 enhanced recognition memory for at least 28 d without altering locomotor- or anxiety-related behaviors. When given after a b

Memory Modulation for Warfighters.

This paper explores the potential of memory modulation techniques (MMTs) to alleviate psychological distress among veterans and active-duty soldiers, particularly in cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury. While conventional treatments have shown limited success, emerging pharmacological and neurotechnological interventions-such as propranolol, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and optogenetics-offer new possibilities for mitigating the emotional burden of traumatic memories. For this reason, there appears to be an obligation to invest in the research of such techniqu

The Digitized Memory Clinic.

Several major challenges, including an ageing population and declining workforce and the implementation of recent breakthrough therapies for Alzheimer disease, are prompting a necessary rethink of how people with neurodegenerative dementias are diagnosed and medically managed. Digital health technologies could play a pivotal part in this transformation, with new advances enabling the collection of millions of data points from a single individual. Possible applications include unobtrusive monitoring that aids early detection of disease and artificial intelligence-based health advice. To transla
