Contextual cues and transition statistics drive expression of competing motor memories.

Learning multiple motor skills and expressing them appropriately in changing environments is challenging. While contextual cues help separate these memories, their interaction during retrieval remains unclear. We investigated how memory stability, recency, and transitional statistics of learning environments influence this process. Across six visuomotor adaptation experiments, participants learned opposing rotations linked to distinct cues under blocked or interleaved schedules and were tested in stable or dynamic environments. We found that contextual cues separated memories, but expression w

Novel word acquisition in aphasia: Facing the word-referent ambiguity of natural language learning contexts.

Recent research suggests that some people with aphasia preserve some ability to learn novel words and to retain them in the long-term. However, this novel word learning ability has been studied only in the context of single word-picture pairings. We examined the ability of people with chronic aphasia to learn novel words using a paradigm that presents new word forms together with a limited set of different possible visual referents and requires the identification of the correct word-object associations on the basis of online feedback. We also studied the relationship between word learning abil

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological evaluation after anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm surgery.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated high cerebral functions 6 months after surgery for bleeding ACoA aneurysms comparing neurophysiological and neuropsycological tests. METHODS: Twelve patients were chosen among a series of cases operated on in the first 48 hours after ACoA aneurysm bleeding. All of them were in Hunt-Hess grade I or II. We excluded patients over 65 years, or with intracranial haematomas, intraventricular haemorrhage, hydrocephalus, or with multiple or giant aneurysms. All of them underwent neurophysiological evaluation with recording and mapping of long latency (P300) auditory and visua

Long-term retention of real-world experiences in a patient with profound amnesia.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is known to be critical for healthy memory function, but patients with MTL damage can, under certain circumstances, demonstrate successful learning of novel information encountered outside the laboratory. Here, we describe a patient, D.C., with extensive but focal bilateral MTL damage centering primarily on his hippocampus, whose memory for real-world experiences was assessed. Tests of remote memory indicated at least some capacity to retrieve specific details. To test his anterograde memory, he was taken on a tour of the NIH Clinical Center, with unique events o

Past adult lead exposure is associated with longitudinal decline in cognitive function.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether adults with past exposure to neurotoxicants have progressive declines in cognitive function years after exposure has ceased, and whether tibia lead is a predictor of the magnitude of change. METHODS: A total of 535 former organolead manufacturing workers with a mean age of 55.6 years, a mean duration of 16 years since last occupational lead exposure, and low blood lead levels at the first study visit and 118 controls were evaluated with neurobehavioral tests two to four times over 4 years. "Peak" tibia lead levels, estimated from current levels measured by X-ra

Reprint of "Value of water mazes for assessing spatial and egocentric learning and memory in rodent basic research and regulatory studies".

Maneuvering safely through the environment is central to survival of all animals. The ability to do this depends on learning and remembering locations. This capacity is encoded in the brain by two systems: one using cues outside the organism (distal cues), allocentric navigation, and one using self-movement, internal cues and sometimes proximal cues, egocentric navigation. Allocentric navigation involves the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and surrounding structures (e.g., subiculum); in humans this system encodes declarative memory (allocentric, semantic, and episodic, i.e., memory for people

Acquired oral reading vocabulary following the onset of amnesia in childhood.

While the neuropsychological literature includes few cases of child-onset amnesia, 2 previous case studies suggest that these patients may be able to learn new information of a semantic or academic nature. The previous studies were, in large part, based on neuropsychological testing performed during adulthood and a retrospective review of academic achievement test scores during childhood. We present patient A.C., who acquired severe anterograde amnesia at age 10 years but demonstrated average levels of performance on tests of reading, spelling and arithmetic upon examination at age 19 years. Retrograde and anterograde memory following selective damage to the dorsolateral entorhinal cortex.

Anatomical and electrophysiological evidence suggest the dorsolateral entorhinal cortex (DLEC) is involved in processing spatial information, but there is currently no consensus on whether its functions are necessary for normal spatial learning and memory. The present study examined the effects of excitotoxic lesions of the DLEC on retrograde and anterograde memory on two tests of allocentric spatial learning: a hidden fixed-platform watermaze task, and a novelty-preference-based dry-maze test. Deficits were observed on both tests when training occurred prior to but not following n-methyl d-as

Thalamic volume deficit contributes to procedural and explicit memory impairment in HIV infection with primary alcoholism comorbidity.

Component cognitive and motor processes contributing to diminished visuomotor procedural learning in HIV infection with comorbid chronic alcoholism (HIV+ALC) include problems with attention and explicit memory processes. The neural correlates associated with this constellation of cognitive and motor processes in HIV infection and alcoholism have yet to be delineated. Frontostriatal regions are affected in HIV infection, frontothalamocerebellar regions are affected in chronic alcoholism, and frontolimbic regions are likely affected in both; all three of these systems have the potential of contr

Is there evidence for an emotion-related bias in verbal learning or memory in individuals putatively high at risk for mania?

There is broad evidence that individuals with bipolar disorder show deficits in verbal memory and learning. Such deficits seem to be independent of acute mood episodes and to manifest after the onset of the disorder. Less research has been conducted in relation to more specific memory functions, particularly to verbal memory and learning for emotional information. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to investigate if there is evidence for an affective memory bias in at-risk individuals before the onset of affective disorder. We applied the Emotional Auditive Verbal Learning Test t

Acute pre-learning stress and declarative memory: impact of sex, cortisol response and menstrual cycle phase.

This study explores the influence of pre-learning stress on performance on declarative memory tasks in healthy young adults in relation to sex and menstrual cycle phase. The sample was composed of 119 students (32 men and 87 women) from 18 to 25 years of age. The women were tested in different hormonal stages (30 in follicular phase, 34 in luteal phase, and 23 using oral contraceptives). The participants were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or a control condition. Afterwards, their memory performance was measured using a standardized memory test (Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning T

Antiamnesic Effect of Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) Leaves on Amyloid Beta (Aβ)1-42-Induced Learning and Memory Impairment.

To examine the antiamnesic effects of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) leaves, we performed in vitro and in vivo tests on amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity. The chloroform fraction from broccoli leaves (CBL) showed a remarkable neuronal cell-protective effect and an inhibition against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The ameliorating effect of CBL on Aβ1-42-induced learning and memory impairment was evaluated by Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. The results indicated improving cognitive function in the CBL group. After the behavioral tests, antioxidant effects

A process approach to verbal memory assessment: Exploratory evidence of inefficient learning in women remitted from anorexia nervosa.

Introduction: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with deficits in set-shifting and cognitive flexibility, yet less is known about the persistence of these deficits after recovery and how they might contribute to reported difficulties organizing and learning new information. To address this question, the current study applied a process-focused approach, that accounts for errors and strategies by which a score is achieved, to investigate the relationship between verbal memory and executive function in women remitted from AN. Method: Twenty-six women remitted from anorexia nervosa (RAN) and 25 c

Investigating the association between pre-implantation cognitive performance and one-year post-implantation speech perception outcomes in adult cochlear implant recipients using the repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status for hearing impaired individuals (RBANS-H).

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether pre-implantation cognitive function, assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status for Hearing Impaired Individuals (RBANS-H) correlates with speech perception oneyear post-implantation, and whether it can serve as a factor explaining unexpected outcome variability in adult Cochlear implant (CI) recipients. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study involved 68 postlingually deaf CI recipients (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05525221). RBANS-H assesses five cognitive domains: Immediate Memory (List Learning and Story

The role of executive functions in long-term memory: case report.

The role of executive functions in long-term memory has been studied. We describe a single-case study, consisting of a 45-year-old male patient, hospitalized for right frontal stroke. After the stroke, the patient had memory alterations in everyday activities. However, performance in short-term memory tests was not significantly altered. Long-term memory assessments included pre- and post-stroke episodic, semantic, and procedural memories. Specific skills involved in the acquisition of new learning (auditory-verbal and visual reproduction) were also evaluated, as well as executive functions. T

Frontal lobe-related cognitive functions in patients with sleep apnea syndrome before and after treatment.

Impairments of cognitive executive functions has been previously suspected to occur in Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS), as suggested by some neuropsychological studies. However such functions have not been assessed directly. In the present study, ten patients with SAS were evaluated with various focused frontal lobe-related tests in comparison with ten matched normal controls. Such tasks explored attention, short term memory spans, learning abilities, planning and programming capacities, categorizing activities and verbal fluency. Patients were found with a significant decreased ability to initiate

KIF17 mediates the learning and memory impairment in offspring induced by maternal exposure to propofol during middle pregnancy.

Preclinical studies suggest that propofol may cause neuronal injury to the developing brain. A previous study demonstrated that, in a rat model, maternal exposure to propofol during early or late pregnancy caused learning and memory impairment in the offspring. However, whether propofol exposure during middle pregnancy can cause long‑term behavioral deficits in the offspring remains to be elucidated. N‑methyl‑D‑aspartate receptor 2B subunit (NR2B) serves a critical role in memory modulation. To exert its function, NR2B must be transported to the neuronal membrane by kinesin family member 17 (K
