Testosterone and ill-health in aging men.

As men age, testosterone levels decline, and decreased testosterone levels are associated with increased risks of osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus and mortality. Nevertheless, it is still uncertain whether reduced testosterone level is a cause of ill-health or a marker of pre-existing disease, as systemic illness lowers testosterone levels. Most circulating testosterone is bound to sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, whereas a small proportion circulates as free testosterone. Decreased SHBG level is associated with increased risks for insulin resistance a

Gay men talking about health: are sexuality and health interlinked?

Defining and describing health has traditionally been the role of medical experts. Although a rich literature has recently established the importance of lay accounts of health, one important gap relates to gay men's accounts of health. Data from 11 focus groups involving 45 gay men were thematically analyzed to investigate gay men's views of health. Two contrasting positions on a possible relationship between sexuality and health-there is no link or there is a definite link-were identified. In addition, five key ways gay men talked about health were identified: health is the absence of disease

Stress, health, and mental health symptoms of older women and men.

The objectives of this inquiry were to examine Langner mental health symptomatology screening scores in a community-dwelling sample of older adults, and to explore relations between Langner scores, health, and stress. Older adults (N = 364), who were participants in a study of sex roles, were interviewed in their homes concerning mental health symptoms, health, recent life stress, sex-role conflict, and demographic factors. Respondents reported relatively few symptoms. Symptoms were related to health and independent reports of nervousness and depression in both sexes, and to age in men, but no

Health status, symptoms and health counselling among middle-aged men: comparison of men at low and high risk.

AIM: To assess the levels of health indicators, health behaviour and health counselling among men at low and high risk for adverse health outcomes. METHODS: A total of 273 middle-aged men, 145 at low and 128 at high risk for adverse health outcomes, were studied. Two- and three-way tables with chi-squared tests were performed to identify differences between the groups. A step-wise logistic regression model was used to analyse symptoms and complaints associated with the likelihood of perceived health. RESULTS: One-half of the low-risk men were overweight, of whom 8% were obese. Forty per cent

Body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and metabolic syndrome as predictors of middle-aged men's health.

PURPOSE: There is no reported evidence for an anthropometric index that might link obesity to men's sexual health. We evaluated the ability of an anthropometric index and the symptom scores of five widely used questionnaires to detect men's health problems. We determined the predictive abilities of two obesity indexes and other clinical parameters for screening for lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual dysfunction in middle-aged men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,910 middle-aged men were included in the study. Participants underwent a detailed clinical evaluation that included recordi

Liver fibrosis is associated with men's health care symptoms, especially erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of liver dysfunction among men has been steadily increasing in recent decades. Among the various non-invasive assessment tools available, the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) Index has emerged as a particularly valuable and widely adopted scoring system for evaluating liver fibrosis. This study investigated the relationship between liver fibrosis evaluated by the FIB-4 Index and male health care parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were assessed using standardized questionnaires, including the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for lower urinary tract symptoms (L

Occupational Benzene Exposure and Cancer Risk among Chinese Men: A Report from the Shanghai Men's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Benzene exposure has been associated with increased risk of leukemia and other cancers; however, epidemiologic evidence is inconsistent for the latter, and confounding from smoking and alcohol was rarely adjusted. METHODS: We investigated associations between occupational benzene exposure and risk of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and lung, stomach, liver, and kidney cancers in a population-based cohort of 61,377 men, ages 40 to 74 years. A job-exposure matrix, constructed by industrial hygienists specifically for the study population, was used to derive cumulative benzene exposure

Loss of the Y Chromosome: A Review of Molecular Mechanisms, Age Inference, and Implications for Men's Health.

Until a few years ago, it was believed that the gradual mosaic loss of the Y chromosome (mLOY) was a normal age-related process. However, it is now known that mLOY is associated with a wide variety of pathologies in men, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and many types of cancer. Nevertheless, the mechanisms that generate mLOY in men have not been studied so far. This task is of great importance because it will allow focusing on possible methods of prophylaxis or therapy for diseases associated with mLOY. On the other hand, it would allow better understanding of mLO

The broad reach and inaccuracy of men's health information on social media: analysis of TikTok and Instagram.

Social media (SoMe) offers great potential to expand access to health information, but a significant proportion of users consume its content instead of consulting a physician. We sought to quantify the volume and characterize the accuracy of men's health-related content on TikTok and Instagram. We searched TikTok and Instagram for the terms: testosterone, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, semen retention, Peyronie's disease, and vasectomy. The top 10 hashtags for each term were used to estimate the total impressions for each term on each platform, and posts were then characterized by cre

Popularity and worldwide reach of targeted, evidence-based internet streaming video interventions focused on men's health topics.

Streaming video has emerged as a dominant content-delivery medium for healthcare information, with over 30 million visitors daily to the YouTube platform alone. Videos related to men's health have proliferated, but content produced by trained health care providers remains scarce. We evaluated educational YouTube streaming videos created in collaboration with a large, university-based health system focused on male factor infertility, men's health, and Peyronie's disease, uploaded during 2016-2018. All videos featured a board-certified urologist with fellowship training in andrology. Using YouTu

Longitudinal Associations of Sexual Fluidity and Health in Transgender Men and Cisgender Women and Men.

Research has just begun to study associations between sexual fluidity and health among cisgender individuals; only one cross-sectional study examined these links among transgender individuals. The goals of the current study were to prospectively examine fluidity in sexual attractions and fluidity in sexual orientation identity, and associations with health-related outcomes. Participants were a community-based sample of 45 transgender men, ages 16-51 years, who had recently begun testosterone, and 95 cisgender individuals (53 women, 42 men), ages 18-55 years, who completed surveys either in-per

Homocysteine, frailty, and all-cause mortality in older men: the health in men study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty and hyperhomocysteinemia are common in the older population. The researchers' objectives were to determine whether elevated homocysteine (tHcy) is associated with frailty and mortality. METHODS: The researchers conducted a prospective cohort study. tHcy was measured by immunoassay in 4,248 community-dwelling men aged 70-88 years. Frailty was assessed with the Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illness and Loss of weight (FRAIL) scale. Mortality was determined from the death registry. RESULTS: At baseline, 1,117 men (26.3%) had high tHcy (≥15 µmol/L) and 685 (16.2%) were fra

Low free testosterone predicts frailty in older men: the health in men study.

CONTEXT: The prevalence of frailty increases, whereas testosterone decreases, as men age. Low testosterone may be a risk factor for development of this syndrome. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether testosterone levels are associated with frailty. DESIGN: We conducted a prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Between 2001 and 2004, frailty was assessed in 3616 community-dwelling men aged 70-88 yr. Frailty was reassessed in 1586 men aged 76-93 yr in 2008-2009. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frailty was assessed with the FRAIL scale, comprising five domains: fatigue, difficu

Primary care health issues among men who have sex with men.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to examine "appropriate" health care for men who have sex with men (MSM), which is not to suggest "special" health care. As a group, MSM are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections, anal cancer, and mental health disorders. Focus areas in this article will address health issues that the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) may encounter in clinical practice: anal carcinoma, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), high-risk sexual practices, depression, and substance abuse were topics chosen for inclusion in this article. These topics were amon

The pituitary-gonadal axis and health in elderly men: a study of men born in 1913.

The results of recent studies suggest that a relative hypogonadism in men is associated with several established risk factors for prevalent diseases. Therefore, we determined total and free testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in a cohort of randomly selected men (n = 659) at 67 years of age. These data were analyzed cross-sectionally in relation to blood glucose and serum insulin, which were measured while fasting and after an oral glucose tolerance test, in addition to plasma lipids and blood pressure. The data were also analyzed in relation to impa

Cardiometabolic health in women: differences compared to men.

Cardiometabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cerebrovascular disease, are among the leading causes of mortality in Latin America, with a significant impact on the female population. In Mexico, these conditions show a high and increasing prevalence, particularly among postmenopausal women, due to hormonal changes that negatively affect endothelial function, lipid metabolism, and insulin resistance. Abdominal obesity, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes affect a substantial proportion of women, and tend to worsen with age. Female-specific factors such as menopau
