A study of 258 meniscectomy (245 patients), with a minimum follow-up of twenty years, confirms the excellent functional result obtained by intramural medial meniscectomy performed for isolated meniscus lesions. The joint remodelling, with absence of joint-space narrowing, represents the radiological cicatrix resulting from this surgery. It is a non-evolutive condition. The incidence of meniscectomy in the occurrence of an arthrosis is low (20%). On the other hand, when the meniscus lesion in associated with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, medial meniscectomy often proves to be inade

PURPOSE: One of the major risk factors for OA is meniscectomy (Mx) that causes a rapid and progressive OA. Mx has been employed in various animal models, especially in large ones, to study preclinical safety and strategy effectiveness to counteract OA. The aim of the present study is to review in vivo studies, performed in sheep and published in the last ten years.
METHODS: The search strategy was performed in three websites: www.scopus.com, www.pubmed.com, and www.webofknowledge.com, using "Meniscectomy and osteoarthritis in sheep" keywords.
RESULTS: The 25 included studies performed unilat

BACKGROUND: Surgeon performance has been investigated as a factor affecting patient outcomes after orthopaedic procedures to improve transparency between patients and providers.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to identify whether surgeon performance influenced patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) 1 year after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM). It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in PROMs between patients who underwent APM from various surgeons.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A prospective cohort of 794 pati

PURPOSE: The effect of knee cartilage defects that are detected during partial meniscectomy remains controversial in terms of the long-term prognosis on knee function. This study aimed to investigate the effect of concurrent medial compartment focal cartilage lesions on the long-term prognosis of knee function in patients who underwent arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy for traumatic medial meniscal tears.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 46 patients who underwent arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy between 1991 and 2008 by a single surgeon. Twenty-one patients who underw

Knee injury often triggers post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) that affects articular cartilage (AC), subchondral bone, meniscus and the synovial membrane. The available treatments for PTOA are largely ineffective due to late diagnosis past the "treatment window". This study aimed to develop a detailed understanding of the time line of the progression of PTOA in murine models through longitudinal observation of the femorotibial joint from the onset of the disease to the advanced stage. Quantitative magnetic resonance microimaging (µMRI) and histology were used to evaluate PTOA-associated chan

BACKGROUND: The management of the postoperative period after knee arthroscopic surgery may be challenging because surgical trauma deeply alters the joint microenvironment, causing the release of several catabolic molecules and proinflammatory factors that might slow down functional recovery. The possibility of using hyaluronic acid (HA) to promote postoperative pain relief and expedite functional improvement seems attractive, considering its biological properties.
PURPOSE: The aim of the present double-blind randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effects, in terms of pain control and

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic and degenerative meniscal tears have different anatomic features and different proposed etiologies, yet both are associated with the development or progression of osteoarthritis (OA). In established OA, synovitis is associated with pain and progression, but a relationship between synovitis and symptoms in isolated meniscal disease has not been reported. Accordingly, we sought to characterize synovial pathology in patients with traumatic meniscal injuries and determine the relationships between inflammation, meniscal and cartilage pathology, and symptoms.
METHODS: Thirty-t

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1996eng
We reviewed eight patients over 50-years old, with an initial diagnosis of medial meniscal tear confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and with no evidence of osteonecrosis. After arthroscopic meniscectomy, all patients had recurrent aggravated knee pain and reevaluation with MRI showed images compatible with osteonecrosis. The average age was 65 years (range 54 to 75 years). The mean time from MRI to surgery was 8 weeks (range 1 to 28 weeks). In five patients a total meniscectomy, and in three a partial meniscectomy with recontouring of the meniscus were performed. Surgical treatment

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects >500 million people globally, and this number is expected to increase. OA management primarily focuses on symptom alleviation, using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including Celecoxib. However, such medication has serious side effects, emphasizing the need for disease-specific treatment. The meniscectomy and cranial cruciate ligament transection (CCLx)-treated beagle dog was used to investigate the efficacy of a modified-release formulation of SKI306X (SKCPT) from Clematis mandshurica, Prunella vulgaris, and Trichosanthes kirilowii in managing arthritis. The effects of Rumalon, a glycosaminoglycan peptide complex (GP-C), were evaluated in a partial meniscectomy model of osteoarthritis (OA). When rabbits were treated with Rumalon, 0.25 ml/kg 3 times/week for 12 weeks after partial meniscectomy, the proportion of animals that developed cartilage ulceration was lower than that in untreated meniscectomized rabbits (p less than 0.05). At 6 weeks sacrifice, the same dose of Rumalon was associated with a trend toward reduction in the number of animals with ulcerations. Rumalon administered at a dose of 0.5 ml/kg for 12 weeks reduced the number of ani

BACKGROUND: Pain following arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) varies considerably among patients. Previous studies have suggested that gender and ethnicity may influence postoperative pain after orthopedic procedures. However, limited evidence exists regarding pain differences between Arab and Jewish patients after APM.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of gender and ethnicity with postoperative pain and analgesic consumption during the first month after APM.
METHODS: Patients who underwent primary APM between 2018 and 2019 were retrospectively identified and stratified by gender
