The agraphia of Alzheimer's disease.

Hypothesizing that agraphia in Alzheimer's disease (AD) reflects disturbances in multiple cognitive domains, we evaluated writing samples from 33 patients meeting strict criteria for probable AD. We found agraphia to be common on a standard narrative writing task. When compared with 41 education- and age-matched normal control subjects, AD patients had significantly lower writing scores, wrote significantly fewer words, mentioned significantly fewer categories of information, and were significantly more likely to make writing errors. On stepwise regression procedures, neuropsychological measur

The association of education and socioeconomic status with the Mini Mental State Examination and the clinical diagnosis of dementia in elderly people.

The distribution of scores in the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) of women aged 70-79 years from a rural area of Cambridgeshire is reported. Increasing age, lower socioeconomic group and less education were all found to be associated with lower scores on MMSE. Of these, only increasing age was significantly related to an increase in the diagnosis of dementia.

Prevalence and sociodemographic associations of common mental disorders in a nationally representative sample of the general population of Greece.

BACKGROUND: No study in Greece has assessed so far the full range of common mental disorders using a representative sample of the population from both mainland and insular regions of the country. The aim of the present paper was to present the results of the first such study. METHODS: The study was carried out between 2009-2010 in a nationally representative sample of 4894 individuals living in private households in Greece. Common mental disorders in the past week were assessed with the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R). We also assessed alcohol use disorders (using AUDIT), smoking

Improving precision in the quantification of cognition using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Mini-Mental State Examination.

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) can be used to quantify cognitive ability in older persons undergoing screening for cognitive impairment. Although highly sensitive in detecting mild cognitive impairment, its measurement precision is weakest among persons with milder forms of impairment. We sought to overcome this limitation by integrating information from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) into the calculation of cognitive ability. METHODS: Data from 185 geriatric outpatients screened for cognitive impairment with the MoCA and the MMSE were Rasch analyzed to evaluat

[Severe behavioral disorder caused by an organic disease].

A 65-year-old architect was admitted to our Memory Clinic because of rapidly progressive dementia accompanied by behavioral disorders, which severely restricted his functional independence. The physical examination revealed several focal neurological signs, and neuroimaging confirmed a cerebellar hemorrhage, multiple microbleeds and an ischemic lacunar infarct. Executive functioning was highly impaired. This case report illustrates cerebral amyloid angiopathy as an important entity of vascular dementia and highlights the importance of neuroimaging in patients with suspected vascular cognitive

[Psychiatric disorders in elderly patients admitted in a general hospital].

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders, especially depressive illness, in elderly medical inpatients. SETTING: University Hospital Leiden. DESIGN: Two-stage design. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In six somatic wards a series of 250 patients were randomly selected and screened with two self-rating scales for depression (Beck Depression Inventory, Geriatric Depression Scale) and one screening scale for cognitive dysfunctions (Mini-Mental State Examination). The 52 drop-outs differed significantly from the other patients only in a greater general illness severity, and a

Confrontation naming in Alzheimer's patients: relation to disease severity.

Reports of Alzheimer's disease patients in whom naming performance is disproportionate to other cognitive performances raise questions about the stage model, or dementia-severity level, for predicting naming performance. Thus, dementia severity as defined by Global Deterioration Scale ratings, Mini-Mental State Examination scores, and combinations of them was evaluated as a predictor of naming performance in 102 Alzheimer's patients and was found to account for approximately 1/3 of performance variability. Additional contributions from age at onset, duration, family history, and gender were ne

Follow-up attendance and documented reasons for non-attendance in child and adolescent mental health care: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Failure to continue scheduled follow-up is a common challenge in child and adolescent mental health services and may reduce treatment effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: The present retrospective study aimed to examine demographic, clinical, and treatment-related characteristics associated with attendance at the last scheduled follow-up appointment among children and adolescents receiving outpatient psychiatric care and to identify characteristics associated with the documented reasons for non-attendance among patients who missed their last scheduled follow-up appointment. METHODS: A retro

Veterans have less age-related cognitive decline.

Military service involves exposure to a number of stresses, both psychological and physical. On the other hand, military personnel generally maintain excellent fitness, and veterans have increased access to education and health care. The overall effect on age-related cognitive decline, whether for good or ill, of having served in the armed forces has not been investigated previously. In this study, we examined a diverse population of 208 veterans and 1,216 civilians followed as part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study in 1981, 1982, and 1993 to 1996. We examined change in Mini-Mental Sta

Self-reported mental health outcomes in prenatally cocaine exposed adolescents at 17 years of age.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse developmental effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) are hypothesized to extend into late adolescence, yet few studies have investigated the association between PCE and late adolescent mental health outcomes. We examined the associations between PCE and self-reported mental health symptoms at age 17, controlling for biologic and environmental confounders. We further explored the potential moderating role of sex and the mediating role of earlier drug use by age 15 in the associations. METHOD: 327 (162 PCE; 165 non-cocaine exposed, NCE) urban adolescents, primarily Africa

The Memory Binding Test: Development of Two Alternate Forms into Spanish and Catalan.

BACKGROUND: The Memory Binding Test (MBT) is emerging as a promising tool for the detection of subtle memory impairment suggestive of Alzheimer's disease (AD). For such a test to be widely accessed and used, the availability of both alternate forms and language adaptations is required. OBJECTIVES: To develop a thorough methodology for obtaining alternate forms (A and B) of the MBT in Spanish and Catalan and to assess their equivalence. METHOD: According to the original development of the test, frequency was taken as the lexical variable of reference for the Spanish and Catalan adaptations. A

Validity of a semantically cued recall procedure for the mini-mental state examination.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of supplementing the three-item recall portion of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with a cued recall procedure to help specify the nature of patients' memory problems was examined. METHOD: Subjects were 247 individuals representing three diagnostic groups: Alzheimer's disease (AD), subcortical vascular ischemic dementia (SVaD), and normal controls. Individuals were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests, including the MMSE, as part of a comprehensive evaluation for the presence of dementia or other neurologic disorder. RESULTS: MMSE performance di

Effects of interpreters on the evaluation of psychopathology in non-English-speaking patients.

Non-English-speaking patients in need of psychiatric services are usually evaluated with the help of an interpreter. Discussions with psychiatrists and lay hospital interpreters who had experience in these interviews and content analysis of eight audiotaped interpreter-mediated psychiatric interviews suggested that clinically relevant interpreter-related distortions could lead to misevaluation of the patient's mental status. The author notes that pre- and post-interview meetings of clinicians and interpreters have been found useful in minimizing these distortions.

Personality change in the Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder: 30-Year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Persistence is said to be a feature of personality disorder, but there are few long-term prospective studies of the condition. A total of 200 patients with anxiety and depressive disorders involved in a randomised controlled trial initiated in 1983 had full personality status assessed at baseline. We repeated assessment of personality status on three subsequent occasions over 30 years. METHODS: Personality status was recorded using methods derived from the Personality Assessment Schedule, which has algorithms for allocating Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DS

[The minimental state examination--an up-to-date review].

The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was developed in 1975 as a brief test for the quantitative assessment of cognitive impairment in adults. It has since been widely used by physicians throughout the world. Its main use is for screening for cognitive impairment, which is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The MMSE is also used for follow-up of cognitive changes in patients suffering from dementia and as a research instrument for assessing the efficacy of drug treatment in Alzheimer's disease. The MMSE examines orientation, immediate and short-term memory, atten
