Positive mental health and mental illness.

Based on the Mental Health Continuum Short Form administered in the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey - Mental Health (CCHS-MH), the percentages of Canadians aged 15 or older classified as having flourishing, moderate or languishing mental health were 76.9%, 21.6% and 1.5%, respectively. Compared with estimates for other countries, a higher percentage of Canadians were flourishing. In accordance with the complete mental health model, mental health was also assessed in combination with the presence or absence of mental illness (depression; bipolar disorder; generalized anxiety disorder; alc

Recovery from eating disorder 1 year after start of treatment is related to better mentalization and strong reduction of sensitivity to others.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether recovery from an eating disorder is related to pre-treatment attachment and mentalization and/or to improvement of attachment and mentalization during treatment. METHOD: For a sample of 38 anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) patients receiving treatment the relations between attachment security, mentalization, comorbidity and recovery status after 12 months (not recovered or recovered), and after 18 months (persistently ill, relapsed, newly recovered, or persistently recovered) were investigated. Attachment security and mentalization were assessed by

Mentalization in children and mothers in the context of trauma: An initial study of the validity of the Child Reflective Functioning Scale.

This study examined the validity of the Child Reflective Functioning Scale (CRFS: Ensink, Target, & Oandason, 2013, Child reflective functioning scale scoring manual: for application to the Child Attachment Interview. London, UK: Anna Freud Centre - University College London), a measure designed to assess reflective functioning (RF) or mentalization during middle childhood. Participants were 94 mother-child dyads divided into two subgroups; 46 dyads where children had histories of intrafamilial (n = 22 dyads) or extrafamilial (n = 24 dyads) sexual abuse, and a community control group composed

Maternal PTSD and Depression as Predictors of Child Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms: The Mediating Roles of Parenting Stress and Maternal Mentalization.

Background: Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) represents a major risk factor for both maternal psychological well-being and child development. Maternal psychopathology-particularly depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-has been shown to impair parenting functioning and increase children's vulnerability to emotional and behavioral difficulties. Objectives: This study examined the associations between maternal depression and PTSD symptoms and children's internalizing and externalizing problems, and explored whether parenting stress and maternal mentalization capacities m

Short-Term versus Long-Term Mentalization-Based Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: 24 Months Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and prevalent psychiatric disorder. Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) is an evidence-based intervention for BPD, which is often delivered as a long-term psychotherapy program for BPD. We previously published a randomized clinical trial assessing short-term versus long-term MBT for BPD 16 months after randomization as the primary follow-up time point. The objective was to assess the long-term (24 months) results of short-term versus long-term MBT for outpatients with BPD. METHODS: Adult outpatients (≥18 years) with subthreshold or

Problematic Use of the Internet Mediates the Association between Reduced Mentalization and Suicidal Ideation: A Cross-Sectional Study in Young Adults.

Suicide is a major public health problem, and it is urgent to investigate its underlying clinical and psychological concomitants. It has been suggested that low mentalization skills and problematic use of the internet (PUI) are factors that can play a role in suicidal behaviors. It is possible that poor mentalization skills contribute to leading to forms of PUI, which, in turn, can represent triggers for suicidal ideation (SI). We tested this hypothesis through a quantitative and cross-sectional study on a sample (n = 623) of young adults (age range: 18−34). Self-report measures investigating

Economic evaluation of day hospital versus intensive outpatient mentalization-based treatment alongside a randomized controlled trial with 36-month follow-up.

Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) has demonstrated robust effectiveness in the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in both day-hospital (MBT-DH) and intensive outpatient MBT (MBT-IOP) programs. Given the large differences in intensity and associated treatment costs, there is a need for studies comparing their cost-effectiveness. A health economic evaluation of MBT-DH versus MBT-IOP was performed alongside a multicenter randomized controlled trial with a 36-month follow-up. In three mental health-care institutions in the Netherlands, 114 patients were randomly allocated to MBT-

Mental foramen and mental nerve: changes with age.

In a study of 525 dry mandibles and dissections in 50 cadavers, the mental foramen (MF) was found: single in 94.67% of the cases and multiple in 5.33%. Its shape was round in 34.48% with an average diameter of 1.68 mm and oval in 65.52% with an average long diameter of 2.37 mm. In 43.66% the MF was located in front of the apex of the root of the second premolar. In children before tooth eruption, the MF is somewhat closer to the alveolar margin; during the eruption period, the MF descends to half way between the margins, and in adults with the teeth preserved, the MF is somewhat closer to the

Patient experiences of therapy for borderline personality disorder: Commonalities and differences between dialectical behaviour therapy and mentalization-based therapy and relation to outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and mentalization-based therapy (MBT) are widely used evidence-based psychological treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD). The study aimed to establish evidence on common and unique, and helpful and unhelpful, treatment processes. DESIGN: Mixed-methods. METHODS: In-depth qualitative interview data on patient experiences during treatment were combined with quantitative outcome measures in 73 patients diagnosed with a personality disorder and receiving DBT or MBT. RESULTS: Across both DBT and MBT, accounts of learning not to react

A randomised controlled trial of mentalization-based treatment versus structured clinical management for patients with comorbid borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is an under-researched mental disorder. Systematic reviews and policy documents identify ASPD as a priority area for further treatment research because of the scarcity of available evidence to guide clinicians and policymakers; no intervention has been established as the treatment of choice for this disorder. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is a psychotherapeutic treatment which specifically targets the ability to recognise and understand the mental states of oneself and others, an ability shown to be compromised in people with ASPD. The a

Baseline Mentalization Predicts Depression and Alexithymia Following Brief Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in Students Seeking Help at a University Clinic: A Pre-Post Study.

Mentalization is a core psychological function underlying emotional regulation and vulnerability to psychopathology. This pre-post naturalistic study examined whether baseline mentalization predicts depressive symptoms and alexithymia in university students undergoing brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A sample of 104 students was assessed at baseline (T0) and post-treatment (T1). Longitudinal path analysis showed that baseline mentalization significantly predicted both depressive symptoms and alexithymia at follow-up, controlling for their temporal stability. Lower mentalization at intake wa

Long-term effects of mentalization-based treatment for psychotic disorder: a 5-year follow-up of a multi-center, randomized-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The results of a previous randomized trial showed that mentalization-based treatment for psychotic disorder (MBTp) was associated with greater improvement than treatment as usual (TAU) in social functioning up to 6 months after treatment. The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect after 5 years. METHODS: The researchers tried to find all patients who had participated in the trial (n = 84) and to assess, blind to previous treatment status, their social functioning and mentalizing capacity. Social functioning was measured using the Social Functioning Scale, mentalizin

Navigating foster care: how parental drug use and caregiver attitudes shape children's mentalization processes-an exploratory longitudinal follow-up study: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The current research concept of mentalization is used in the study to clearly identify affective and cognitive abilities of the caregiver-child dyad with the aim of compensating deficits on both sides with psychological-psychotherapeutic strategies. METHODS: The objective of this explorative, longitudinal intervention study is to provide an in-depth understanding of the psycho-social background of 30 children aged 6-12 years living in institutional or family-centered foster care. Data will be collected at three time points: before, after and 12 months after participating in the ne

[What Did You Like About the Therapy? - A Qualitative Study on the Evaluation of Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Conduct Disorder].

Psychotherapeutic treatment for adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) is considered difficult for various reasons. On the one hand, patients frequently lack psychological strain, and striving for autonomy is part of typical adolescent development. On the other hand, therapists can react aversively to delinquent and violent behavior, and insufficient psychological models explaining aetiology and maintenance of symptoms can impede treatment of adolescents with CD. Mentalization-Based Therapy for adolescents with CD (MBT-CD) was developed with the aim of addressing these difficulties and improvi

Associations between childhood adverse experiences and medication adherence in asthma patients: a dual variable-centered and person-centered analysis of attachment security and mentalization.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adverse experiences are increasingly recognized as risk factors for poor health outcomes in chronic diseases. However, their influence on medication adherence in asthma patients remains underexplored, with limited research addressing the key psychological constructs of attachment security and mentalization. This study adopts both variable-centered and person-centered perspectives to investigate the association between childhood adverse experiences and medication adherence among asthma patients, as well as the heterogeneity within this relationship. METHODS: A cross-secti

Effectiveness of mentalization-based therapy and dialectical behavior therapy for cluster B personality disorders: a naturalistic study of service utilization and treatment dropout.

INTRODUCTION: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) are effective treatments for cluster B personality disorders (PDs), but few studies have assessed their real-world clinical outcomes in routine practice outside a controlled trial setting. METHODS: Our descriptive naturalistic retrospective study evaluated 288 patients with cluster B PDs who predominantly had borderline PD referred to MBT or DBT. RESULTS: Observed changes in emergency department (ED) use and hospitalizations one year before and during the first year of therapy were described for patients w

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Mentalization-Based Therapy With the Unified Protocol in the Treatment of Psychopathy and Comorbid Borderline + Antisocial Personality Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Those with cooccurring antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are reported to be highly psychopathic and to represent a severe challenge to treatment efforts. In a sample of such individuals, the effects of two treatments, mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and the unified protocol (UP), were investigated on three outcomes: (i) the psychopathy trait domains of meanness, boldness and disinhibition proposed by the triarchic psychopathy model (TPM); (ii) antisocial and borderline symptom severity; and (iii) the severity of their common features

A meta-analysis of theory of mind and 'mentalization' in borderline personality disorder: a true neuro-social-cognitive or meta-social-cognitive impairment?

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with significant impairments in mentalization and theory of mind (ToM) which are considered as closely related concepts by many authors particularly in psychoanalytical circles. However, for understanding interpersonal difficulties in personality disorders, it is important to distinguish neuro-social cognitive impairment from the abnormal meta-social-cognitive style of patients. METHODS: The current systematic review aimed to conduct separate meta-analyses of 'mentalization' [reflective functioning (RF]

The ultra mentality - Foundations for maximising athletic mental performance.

For over 100 years there has been an academic pursuit of understanding and applying the principals of sport psychology to improve athletic performance. How is it that certain athletes do their best when it means the most while others "choke"? Meeting and exceeding the challenges that are presented can completely change the trajectory of any athlete's career. What is it that separates the good from the great and the great from the superstars? Is it motivation, preparation, determination, discipline, commitment, natural talent, physical strength, or work ethic? Maybe it is a combination of all o
