Maternal-antenatal attachment is higher in young pregnant women with more social support, mentors, and lower fear of childbirth.

The goal of this study was to examine correlates of maternal-fetal attachment in a diverse sample of young pregnant mothers. Although studies have looked at social determinants of health and maternal-fetal attachment, none have examined correlates that may be more prevalent in younger populations including prenatal drug use or fear of childbirth. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 154 pregnant adolescents and young adults (75.5% Black/African American, 15.6% white, 7.5% biracial, 1.4% other) ranging from 14-21 years old. Participants were recruited early in pregnancy and completed o

Fostering Connections: How Mentoring Relationships Can Promote Youth Social Capital.

Little is known about how mentors support mentees in strengthening social capital. It is theorized that mentors support mentees in building new connections and strengthening existing relationships (i.e., connection-building support). This mixed-methods study examines how connection-building support contributes to mentee's network mobilization in pursuit of life goals. Survey data were gathered from youth (n = 122) ages 13-18 (88% youth of color; 57% female). A path model tested the association between connection-building support and mentee goal attainment and occupational identity via network

From Recruitment to Belonging: A Multidimensional Mentoring Program for Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Residents.

BACKGROUND: Mentorship is crucial to physicians' professional development, with well-documented benefits. However, residents from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) often face barriers to accessing high-quality mentorship. Despite this gap, few structured programs exist that deliberately tackle these barriers, leaving an important opportunity to enhance support for URiM trainees. AIM: To design and implement a multidimensional URiM mentorship program. SETTING: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Internal Medicine Residency. PARTICIPANTS: URiM residents. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The

Cascade mentoring: a proposal for transforming radiology education in line with the European training curriculum.

Although mentoring remains a fundamental part of medical training, the traditional approach of a senior mentor guiding a junior trainee often fails to meet the diverse and evolving needs of learners in radiology. While peer and near-peer mentoring approaches have shown promise, they often lack a scalable, structured framework. We present a cascade mentoring model embedded within the radiology training environment, in which senior trainees mentor junior residents, who then supervise undergraduate learners. This model is aligned with the European Society of Radiology's (ESR) competency-based fra

Modeling the Potential Impact of Mentor Mother Programs on Vertical Transmission of HIV in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Peer support provided by "mentor mothers" (MM) may increase retention in care for pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBFW) living with HIV, which can lead to improved viral suppression and prevention of vertical transmission (PVT). The impact of MM on PVT may differ among PBFW subpopulations with different baseline risks of antiretroviral therapy (ART) interruption. METHOD: We used a microsimulation model of HIV progression and care for PBFW living with recently acquired HIV in Kenya to evaluate an MM program that reduced the cumulative risk of ART interruption between initiation o

New Age Mentoring and Disruptive Innovation-Navigating the Uncharted With Vision, Purpose, and Equity.

For individuals aspiring to a career in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, mentorship can shape destiny. Mentorship helps assure safe passage into the specialty, and it influences the arc of professional development across the career continuum. Even before the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, technology and social networking were transforming mentorship in otolaryngology. Now, in an increasingly virtual world, where in-person interactions are the exception, mentorship plays an even more pivotal role. Mentors serve as trusted guides, helping learners navigate accelerating

Support by trained mentor mothers for abused women: a promising intervention in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a major health problem and negatively affects the victim's mental and physical health. Evidence-based interventions in family practice are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate a low threshold home-visiting intervention for abused women provided by trained mentor mothers in family practice. The aim was to reduce exposure to IPV, symptoms of depression as well as to improve social support, participation in society and acceptance of mental health care. METHODS: A pre-post study of a 16-week mentoring intervention with identified ab

Mentoring and social skills training: ensuring better outcomes for youth in foster care.

Youth in foster care face significant life challenges that make it more likely that they will face negative outcomes (i.e., school failure, homelessness, and incarceration). While the reason(s) for out-of-home placement (i.e., family violence, abuse, neglect and/or abandonment) provide some context for negative outcomes, such negative outcomes need not be a foregone conclusion. In fact, interventions created to serve at-risk youth could ostensibly address the needs of youth in foster care as well, given that they often face similar social, emotional, and other challenges. Specifically, the aut

Mixed reality headset in vitreoretinal surgical teaching: a newly defined tele-mentoring model.

PURPOSE: To report the benefits of a newly defined tele-mentoring surgical model in vitreoretinal surgery based on a mixed reality headset (MRH) to enhance ophthalmic surgical education. METHODS: A two-step approach was used to define and test the efficacy of the tele-mentoring model designed for surgical teaching. First, the application of the innovative MRH in intraocular surgery was validated for safety and efficacy by an expert surgeon. Secondly, a board of vitreoretinal surgeons designed the tele-mentoring model for surgical teaching, entailing a pre-operative training and the execution o
