Mercury inhalation poisoning and acute lung injury in a child. Use of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

Acute mercury inhalation poisoning is a rare cause of acute lung injury. It is commonly fatal in the young child because of progressive pulmonary failure. We describe a 3-month-old infant who survived this insult with the use of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation. This form of support may be an option in the patient with severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or air leak syndromes.

Mercury, not sulphur dioxide, poisoning as cause of smelter disease in industrial plants producing sulphuric acid.

Several episodes of "smelter disease", previously assumed to be caused by sulphur dioxide (SO2) poisoning, have been reported in workers replacing pipes in sulphuric acid manufacturing plants. One such incident, affecting 20 men, was recorded in Akita, Japan, in July, 1993, but the protection these workers used suggested that some cause other than SO2 needed to be looked for. 10 workers were affected despite wearing respirators with SO2 cartridges, the symptoms including dyspnoea, diarrhoea, colicky pain, muscle pain and eczema with erythema. Subsequently 10 other workers using face masks with

Mercury's poisonous pulse: Blazing a new path for aquatic conservation with eco-friendly mitigation strategies.

Many compounds and inorganic elements released from natural and anthropogenic origins contaminate the environment and are implicated in catastrophes involving most biologically driven ecological processes and public health. One such element is Mercury. Mercury exists in both inorganic elemental form and the more metabolically active molecular form e.g. methyl mercury. They enjoy wide applications in medicine and form key components of numerous electrical and electronic devices. Unfortunately, severe health and adverse physiological conditions have developed from the impacts of mercury on the f

The protection of invertebrates, fish, and vascular plants against inorganic mercury poisoning by sulfur and selenium derivatives.

Protection of organisms against mercury (Hg) poisoning is most commonly associated with the antagonistic effects of selenium (Se)-compounds against mercury alkyls in higher animals. This study shows that there is no consistent difference among Periodic Group VIA derivatives including S(IV), S(II) organic, Se (IV), Se (II) organic, possibly Se VI, as well and Te (IV) in their ability to protect against mercury poisoning. The organisms used in assays were: Coleus explants (leaf abscission); turnip (germination); pea (growth inhibition and Hg uptake); a planarian (regeneration); the brineshrimp (

[A case of chronic inorganic mercury poisoning with progressive intentional tremor and remarkably prolonged latency of P300].

A 59-year-old man showed slowly progressive intentional tremor for 40 years prior to first visit to us in 1996. He was exposed to mercury vapor for about 3 years (1956-1959) and the diagnosis of chronic inorganic mercury poisoning was made. Hasegawa dementia scale-revised (HDS-R), mini-mental state (MMS) examination and P300 examination were performed. HDS-R and MMS were within normal range but the latency of P300 was remarkably prolonged. His tremor was considered to be due to chronic inorganic poisoning because there were no other causes and the frequency of his tremor was 3-4 Hz. which was

Long-term follow-up after acute mercury poisoning-induced pneumonitis following cinnabar heating: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Among 3 forms of mercury, elemental mercury vapor presents the highest threat due to its potential to cause acute pneumonitis. The management of acute mercury vapor poisoning remains unclear, particularly in acute lung injury. We present a case of mercury vapor poisoning resulting from the heating of cinnabar, successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids and chelation therapy, and follow-up over 6 months. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old female patient was admitted to the Emergency Department due to dyspnea, chest tightness, and weakness following cinnabar heating. DIAGNOSES

Mercury kinetics in a case of severe mercuric chloride poisoning treated with dimercapto-1-propane sulphonate (DMPS).

A case of severe mercuric chloride poisoning with clinical signs of mucosal damage of the gastrointestinal tract and anuric renal failure, is presented. The initial whole blood mercury concentration was 14,300 micrograms l-1. This concentration is supposed to be associated with fatal outcome due to multiple organ failure. Because of anuric renal failure, haemodialysis was necessary. Kidney function returned to normal within 10 days. Haemodialysis proved to be ineffective with regard to total mercury elimination. Treatment with DMPS was started because of very severe poisoning, anuric renal fai

Nanoelemental selenium alleviated the mercury load and promoted the formation of high-molecular-weight mercury- and selenium-containing proteins in serum samples from methylmercury-poisoned rats.

Selenite (Se4+) has been found to counteract the neurotoxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) in MeHg-poisoned rats. However, Se4+ has narrow range between its toxic and beneficial effects. Nanoelemental selenium (SeNPs) was found to be less toxic than other forms of Se such as Se4+. In this study, the effects of SeNPs on the load of mercury (Hg) in rats were investigated. Hyphenated technique based on size-exclusion chromatography coupled with UV and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS) detection and synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (SR-XRF) were used to ana

Mercury deposition and its relationship to inner ear function in methylmercury-poisoned rats. A histological and immunohistochemical study.

Mercury deposition and its relationship to the inner ear function in methylmercury-poisoned rats were examined. Rats were poisoned with methylmercury chloride. After the appearance of signs of poisoning, the cerebellar and inner ear tissues were examined histochemically using an autoradiographic procedure. Mercury deposits were typically found in the cerebellum and appeared in parts of the vestibular nerves, cochlear nerves, spiral ganglion and stria vascularis. In the vestibule, a slight mercury deposition was observed in the acoustic maculae and in the cochlea; only one instance of mercury d

Detection of Mercury in Human Organs and Hair in a Case of a Homicidal Poisoning of a Woman Autopsied 6 Years After Death.

In the described case of the death of a 53-year-old woman, no toxicological examination was performed directly after death (only an anatomopathological autopsy), although symptoms of serious gastrointestinal disturbances had been present (the woman had been hospitalized twice in the course of several months). It was assumed that the cause of death was myocardial infarction. Five years later, some new circumstances came to light which suggested that somebody could have administered some poison (metals, cyanides) to the woman. Toxicological analysis of postmortem samples from the corpse, exhumed

[The observation of blood-brain barrier of organic mercury poisoned rat: a Gd-DTPA enhanced magnetic resonance study].

Permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) of methylmercury chloride (MMC) intoxicated rat brain was studied in vivo by gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), measuring the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) and the transverse relaxation time (T2). MMC intoxicated rat brain showed the prolonged T1 in the cerebral white matter and prolonged T2 in the cerebellar cortex. After Gd-DTPA administration, T1 of cerebral and cerebellar white matter shortened from 1.647 to 1.344 sec., and 1.290 to 1.223 sec. respectively. On the contrary, T2

Evaluation of mass mercury poisoning cases occurring in a center in Türkiye: symptomatology, treatment methods, and follow-up processes.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy metal with extensive applications. In children, mercury exposure often occurs inadvertently through laboratories, thermometers, or fluorescent lamps. Inhalation of elemental mercury can affect the central nervous system and urinary system. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications. A retrospective evaluation was conducted on 82 pediatric cases of mercury poisoning who presented to Bingöl State Hospital on January 15, 2020. Blood and urine mercury levels were measured. Patients with mercury levels > 10 μg/L received intravenous treat

Fixed drug eruption due To 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) treatment for mercury poisoning: a rare adverse effect.

BACKGROUND: Fixed drug eruptions (FDE) are characterized by recurrent, usually solitary erythematous or dark red macular, plaque or bullous lesions, all at the same site. Among the first choices for antidotal treatment in mercury exposure, 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) is generally a drug with a low incidence of side effects. FDE due to DMPS was not detected in our literature research and so we aimed to present this rare case. CASE REPORT: Forty-eight-year-old male patient, gunpowder and explosives factory worker, was admitted to our hospital because of mercury exposure and we

Case Report: Successful management of hepatic injury secondary to mercury (II) oxide poisoning in a Vulpes lagopus with tail gland infection.

A 6.08 kg female stray Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) of unknown age was presented with tail gland inflammation. Initial conventional therapy and subsequent tail amputation at a primary veterinary facility resulted in limited improvement. Subsequently, a topical medication red mercuric oxide (Hydrargyri Oxydum Rubrum) was applied for 4 weeks. Although the local infection showed signs of improvement, the fox subsequently developed progressive systemic signs, including anorexia, dark urine, and weight loss, prompting referral. Clinical examination revealed a large amount of cherry-red medication co

The organic mercury compounds, methylmercury and ethylmercury, inhibited ciliary movement of ventricular ependymal cells in the mouse brain around the concentrations reported for human poisoning.

Functions of the nervous system are supported by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is driven by the ciliary beating of ventricular ependymal cells. The aim of the present study was to examine whether methylmercury (MeHg), a substance with potent neurotoxicity in humans, affects the ciliary movement. The effects of another organic mercury compound, ethylmercury (EtHg), were also assessed for comparison. Toxicity of MeHg or EtHg was evaluated by measuring alterations in the ciliary beat frequency of ependymal cells lining the third ventricle of mouse brain slices. The obtained results
