Cortical atrophy in the cerebellar variant of multiple system atrophy: a voxel-based morphometry study.

This study aimed to determine in vivo the atrophy patterns in clinically established cerebellar variant of multiple-system atrophy (MSA-C) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Thirteen patients with MSA-C (12 probable, 1 possible) and 13 healthy controls matched for age and sex were included. High-resolution MR images were acquired with a 1.5 T scanner. Images were normalized onto a study-specific template, segmented into the tissue compartments, modulated with the Jacobian determinants, and finally smoothed with a Gaussian kernel filter of 10 mm. The general linear model was used to assess st

Distribution of hyaluronan in the central nervous system of the frog.

The qualitative and quantitative distribution pattern of hyaluronan (HA), a component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), was studied in the frog central nervous system by using a highly specific HA probe and digital image analysis. HA reaction was observed in both the white and the gray matter, showing a very intense staining around the perikarya and dendrites in the perineuronal net (PN). In the telencephalon, strong reaction was found in different parts of the olfactory system, in the pallium, and in the amygdala. In the diencephalon, intensive staining was found in the nucleus of Bellonci,

Trk neurotrophin receptors in cholinergic neurons of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Besides cortical pathology, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by a loss of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain but not in the caudate nucleus, putamen or mesencephalon. Since cholinergic neurons which degenerate in AD are sensitive to nerve growth factor (NGF), a link between NGF sensitivity and the vulnerability of cholinergic neurons has been suspected. Levels of NGF are not altered in patients with AD, however. Thus, cholinergic nerve cell death in AD could not result from a deficiency in NGF receptors. Using sequential immunohistochemistry with antibodies that recognize pref

Organization of the output of the ventral striatopallidal system in the rat: ventral pallidal efferents.

The efferent projections of the ventral pallidum in the rat were studied using anterograde tracing of Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and retrograde tracing of choleratoxin subunit B. The main aim of this study was to determine the degree of topographical organization in the outputs of the ventral pallidum. In the telencephalon, ventral pallidal fibers reach the prefrontal cortex, the ventral striatum, the lateral septum, the basolateral, lateral, and central amygdaloid nuclei, and the lateral entorhinal area. Diencephalic targets of ventral pallidal fibers are the lateral hypothalamus, the

Distribution of corticotropin-releasing-factor-like immunoreactivity in brainstem of two monkey species (Saimiri sciureus and Macaca fascicularis): an immunohistochemical study.

Immunohistochemical methods were utilized to systematically map the distribution of corticotropin-releasing-factor-like immunoreactivity (CRF-LI) in the diencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon of two monkey species (Saimiri sciureus and Macaca fascicularis). A primary antiserum directed against the human form of the peptide was utilized. Immunoreactive neuronal perikarya and processes were evident in numerous areas, and the distributions of these elements were similar for the two species. As previously reported for rats, monkeys, and human, intense immunoreactivity was evident in puta

Initial and follow-up MRI in a case of early diagnosed Reye's syndrome.

Early MRI in a case of clinically established Reye's syndrome confirmed CT findings of compressed ventricles and additionally demonstrated signal alterations in the thalamus, mesencephalon and pons. On follow-up MRI the pontine lesion had vanished by 1 week later, while the thalamic lesion persisted for more than 2 months. The patient, however, recovered without neurological sequelae.

Modulation of hypoxic depressions of ventilatory activity in the newborn piglet by mesencephalic mechanisms.

In neonates, ventilatory responses to hypoxia are 'biphasic,' with an augmentation followed by a decline. The hypoxia-induced augmentations in ventilation are attenuated and the depressions are accentuated following denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors. Piglets that were decerebrated at a rostral mesencephalic level exhibited these hypoxia-induced depressions. These depressions were lessened following transection through the caudal mesencephalon. Mesencephalic mechanisms play a fundamental role in the brainstem regulation of ventilatory responses to hypoxia.

MK-801 does not enhance dopaminergic cell survival in embryonic nigral grafts.

Two groups of hemiparkinsonian rats received grafts of embryonic ventral mesencephalon with or without the addition of the NMDA receptor antagonist (+)dizocilpine hydrogen maleate (MK-801). When added to the cell suspension, a 10 microM concentration of MK-801 did not enhance the survival of tyrosine hydroxylase positive neurones in the grafts. These findings suggest that cell death occurring during nigral transplantation is not primarily due to excitotoxicity.

[Craniocerebral injuries in childhood].

Causes of head injury in childhood depend on age. In contrast to the adults there are differences in pathophysiological mechanisms and in the site of lesions. Brain stem disorders are more frequent, superficial brain damage is less frequent than in children. Multiple lesions of the limbic system are as well important as those ones of the mesencephalon. Most of the cases of apallic syndromes in childhood can be due to these lesions.

Rare Presentation of Midbrain Infarction: Isolated Medial Rectus Palsy.

A 69-year-old woman presented with sudden onset of diplopia. In neurologic examination left medial rectus palsy without abduction nystagmus was detected. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute ischemic lesion in mesencephalon on diffusion-weighted images. Sponteneous resolution was observed after 1 month. Medial rectus palsy is a rare presention of acute ischemic stroke and early neuroimaging is important to establish such lesions.

Peduncular hallucinosis following microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia: report of a case.

Peduncular hallucinosis usually presents as a visual disorder and is often a genuine hallucination associated with mesencephalic lesions. A 62-year-old woman with trigeminal neuralgia underwent microvascular decompression for facial pain through a lateral suboccipital approach. The pain completely disappeared after surgery, but a visual hallucination developed on the second postoperative day and continued for 5 days. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the lesions around the mesencephalon.

[Psychotic symptoms in a case of locked-in syndrome].

In this case report we describe a patient who suffered brainstem bleeding mainly in the pons and mesencephalon leading to locked-in syndrome. During rehabilitation she suffered psychotic symptoms of threatening character. Due to location of the lesion and the coincidental appearance of the bleeding, we diagnosed an organic psychosis. After treatment with the atypical neuroleptic drug Quetiapine, the symptoms decreased, facilitating the patient's rehabilitation course.

Vascular Parkinsonism: a case of lacunar infarction localized to mesencephalic substantia nigra.

An 80-year-old caucasian man with acute onset parkinsonism is reported here. Lower limbs were predominantly involved and he did not show remarkable improvement with dopaminergic therapy. His MRI investigation showed an isolated lesion on the right side of the mesencephalon, consistent the localization of substantia nigra. The association of acute onset parkinsonism and this radiological finding is very rare in the literature.

Differential expression of GAP-43 protein in the rostral brain neurons of early chick embryos.

Brain development is composed of several processes, which are chronologically and mechanistically overlapping each other. However, the process of the earliest neural circuit formation in the rostral brain is less understood compared with other processes in brain development, in part because of the lack of appropriate molecular markers. Accordingly, the identification of molecular markers for nerve cells may accelerate the detailed analysis of neural development. Growth associated protein 43 (GAP-43) is a major growth cone protein that regulates F-actin dynamics, and it has been often used as a

Descending projections to the hindbrain and spinal cord in the paddlefish Polyodon spathula.

In vertebrates, almost all motor neurons innervating skeletal muscles are located in the hindbrain and spinal cord, and all brain centers that control behavior have descending projections into these parts of the central nervous system. With tracer injections into the spinal cord and hindbrain, we have studied cell groups with descending projections in the paddlefish. Spinal cord injections reveal retrogradely labeled cells in all reticular and raphe nuclei, as well as the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle. Additional cell groups with projections to the spinal cord are the nucleus of

Chronic acquired hepatic failure: MR imaging of the brain at 1.5 T.

The results of MR imaging of the brain at 1.5 T in 42 adults with non-Wilsonian chronic hepatic failure are reported. T1-weighted images demonstrated increased signal in the globus pallidus in 30 patients and in the putamen in 21, while T2-weighted images demonstrated no corresponding alteration in signal intensity. Symmetric low intensity in the central portion of the globus pallidus on spin-density and T2-weighted images in two patients correlated with regions of calcification on CT scans. Increased intensity on T1-weighted images also occurred in the mesencephalon surrounding the red nucleu

Far posterior subtemporal approach to the dorsolateral brainstem and tentorial ring: technique and clinical experience.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical access to the posterolateral mesencephalon or tentorial ring can be problematic, depending on the angle of the tentorium and associated venous structures. A far posterior subtemporal approach was developed that uses the wide opening of the tentorium and the option of supratentorial retraction of the cerebellum to provide an excellent angle of approach to this region. Details of this technique and a series of eight patients with lesions treated by this approach are presented. METHODS: Seven cavernous malformations and one dural arteriovenous malformation were approached in

Investigation of the significance of quantitative MRI parameters in differentiating PSP from MSA patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of quantitative MRI parkinsonism indices in discriminating between progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients. METHODS: In our study including PSP and MSA patients, we calculated the radiological measures including superior cerebellar peduncle width, middle cerebellar peduncle width, third ventricle width, 3rdV/bifrontal width, pons/mesencephalon (P/M) ratio, P/M ratio 2.0, magnetic resonance parkinsonism index (MRPI), and MRPI 2.0 values. We also constituted a PMS scale to increase the discrimination power. RESULTS:

Valproic Acid Neuroprotection in the 6-OHDA Model of Parkinson's Disease Is Possibly Related to Its Anti-Inflammatory and HDAC Inhibitory Properties.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder where the main hallmark is the dopaminergic neuronal loss. Besides motor symptoms, PD also causes cognitive decline. Although current therapies focus on the restoration of dopamine levels in the striatum, prevention or disease-modifying therapies are urgently needed. Valproic acid (VA) is a wide spectrum antiepileptic drug, exerting many biochemical and physiological effects. It has been shown to inhibit histone deacetylase which seems to be associated with the drug neuroprotective action. The objectives were to study the neuroprotective prop
