Inferior Mesenteric Artery Collaterals to the Uterus during Uterine Artery Embolization: Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Clinical Outcomes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) collaterals to the uterus found during uterine artery embolization (UAE), associated risk factors, and clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 559 women who underwent UAE during the period 2008-2011 for uterine fibroids or adenomyosis found on magnetic resonance imaging were retrospectively analyzed. If IMA collaterals to the uterus were suspected on aortography performed after embolization, selective angiography was performed. Risk factors for IMA collaterals to the uterus were analyzed, including the pr

Positional relationships of abdominal aortic branches for contrast radiography of the inferior mesenteric artery using the coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery as landmarks.

PURPOSE: To establish a method by which angiography of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) can be performed smoothly, we investigated the relative locations of the coeliac trunk (CT), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), IMA, and left renal artery (LtRA). METHODS: From a total of 60 cadavers, 32 cadavers with few arteriosclerotic lesions and little vascular tortuosity were selected for the study. The abdominal aorta (Ao) were removed and incised on both lateral side, along the vertical axis and transected into the ventral and dorsal sides. The intravascular lumen on the ventral side of the Ao w

Dissection of the inferior mesenteric vein versus of the inferior mesenteric artery for the genitourinary function after laparoscopic approach of rectal cancer surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) is the standard surgical technique for the treatment of rectal cancer. However, rates of sexual dysfunction ofup to 50% have been described after TME, and rates of urinary dysfunction of up to 30%. Although other factors are involved, the main cause of postoperative genitourinary dysfunction is intraoperative injury to the pelvic autonomic nerves. The risk is particularly high in the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA). The aim of this study is to compare pre- and post-TME sexual dysfunction, depending on the surgical approach usedin the inferior mesent

Inter-mesenteric connections between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries for left colonic vascularization: implications for colorectal surgery.

PURPOSE: There is confusion regarding the names, the number, and the exact location of the colonic arterial arches which provide connections between the superior and inferior (IMA) mesenteric arteries at the level of the left colic angle. The aim of this review was to delineate the "true" colic arches arising in the meso of the left colic angle and to describe their surgical implications. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed using the MEDLINE database. The search included only human studies between 1913 and 2018. All dissection, angiographic, arterial cast and corrosio

Does inferior mesenteric artery ligation affect outcome in elective colonic resection for diverticular disease?

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to analyse the role of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation during elective colonic resection for diverticular disease (DD) with respect to surgical outcome. METHODS: All patients who underwent elective laparoscopic or open colonic resection for DD from January 2006 to December 2012 were studied. The patients were divided into two groups based on IMA ligation or preservation. The primary end point was to compare anastomotic leakage in the two groups. The secondary end points were operative time, stoma formation, overall post-operative complications, r

Open and Endovascular Management of Inferior Mesenteric Artery Aneurysms: A Report of Two Cases.

Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) aneurysms are a rare entity, attributing to 1% of Splanchnic aneurysms (Edogawa S, Shibuya T, Kurose K et al. Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm: case report and literature review. Ann Vasc Dis 2013;6:98-101), often found incidentally on evaluation for other intra-abdominal pathologies. Similar to other visceral arterial aneurysms, there is an estimated 20-50% risk of potentially fatal rupture and repair is generally recommended. We report 2 patients with IMA aneurysms, using them as cases to illustrate feasibility of both open and endovascular management opti

Branching pattern of inferior mesenteric artery in a black african population: a dissection study.

Background. Branching pattern of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and pattern of vascular supply to the left colon and rectosigmoid areas, though important during colorectal surgery, display interethnic variations. Further, these regions have notable vascular "weak points" reported to be highly susceptible to ischemic colitis. This study aimed at evaluating the branching pattern of IMA in a black African population. Materials and Methods. Fifty-seven formalin-embalmed cadavers (28 Male, 27 Female) were studied. The length, branching pattern, and diameter of IMA at its origin were recorded. Res

Inferior mesenteric artery arteriovenous malformation, a rare cause of ischemic colitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that connects the arteries and the veins. Because normal capillary bed is partially or completely absented in the AVM, the blood passes quickly from the arteries to the veins, which disrupts normal blood flow and oxygen supply to the surrounding tissues. This is called "steal phenomenon," and in the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) territory, this may lead to abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, portal hypertension, and even ischemic colitis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old man presented to our emergen

Preservation of the inferior mesenteric artery in laparoscopic nerve-sparing colorectal surgery for endometriosis.

Laparoscopic rectosigmoid resection for endometriosis is usually performed with the section of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) distal to the left colic artery (low-tie ligation). This study was to determine outcomes in IMA-sparing surgery in endometriosis cases. A single-center retrospective study based on the analysis of clinical notes of women who underwent laparoscopic rectosigmoid segmental resection and IMA-sparing surgery for deep infiltrating endometriosis with bowel involvement between March the 1st, 2018 and February the 29th, 2020 in a referral hospital. During the study period,

Endovascular coil embolization of inferior mesenteric artery to ileal-conduit fistula: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Uretero-arterial fistulas (UAFs) are uncommon and pose a diagnostic dilemma, making them life threatening if not recognized and treated expediently. UAFs to small arteries such as a branch of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) are very uncommon and present a further diagnostic and treatment challenge. There should be a high index of suspicion for UAFs when intervening on patients with history of treated pelvic cancers and long-standing ureteric stents experiencing hematuria not attributable to another cause. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a fistula formed between a dist

Colonic hypoperfusion following ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in rectosigmoid colon cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Colon perfusion status is one of the most important factors for the determination of postoperative anastomotic complications. Colonic hypoperfusion can be induced by inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation in some patients. This study aimed to evaluate atherosclerotic risk assessment and vascular parameters of CT angiography as predictors of colonic hypoperfusion. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at a tertiary referral hospital and included 46 rectosigmoid colon cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic anterior resection between August 2013 to July 2014. Atherosclerotic

Successful Conservative Management of Inferior Mesenteric Artery Aneurysm with Arteriovenous Fistula: A Case Report.

Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) aneurysm is a rare occurrence, accounting for 1% of all visceral artery aneurysms and is often found incidentally. Surgical resection and endovascular intervention have been first-line treatments because IMA aneurysms have a relatively high risk of life-threatening rupture. Herein, we report the case of a 57-year-old man having a large IMA aneurysm with an arteriovenous fistula that was treated conservatively. The IMA aneurysm was incidentally found using computed tomography (CT) and was connected to the splenic vein through the abnormally dilated tortuous vess

Is Inferior Mesenteric Artery Embolization Indicated Prior to Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?

Type II endoleak is a common condition occurring after endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (EVAR), and may result in aneurysm sac growth and/or rupture in a small number of patients. A prophylactic strategy of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) embolization before EVAR has been advocated, however, the benefits of this strategy are controversial. A clinical vignette allows the authors to summarize the available data about this issue and discuss the possible benefits and risks of prophylactic IMA embolization before EVAR. The authors performed a meta-analysis of available data which

Proximal bowel necrosis after high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in colorectal surgery.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery may jeopardize blood supply to the proximal bowel. We undertook this study to review the clinical features and outcomes of patients who developed proximal bowel necrosis after high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery, and to assess the incidence and the risk factors for this complication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing high or low ligation for sigmoid colon and rectal cancer with a primary anastomosis between April 2004 and March 2009 was performed. Patient and tumor characteris

Hepatic artery reconstruction with inferior mesenteric vein graft in pediatric living donor liver transplantation.

We report a transplant of the left lateral liver segments with two arteries for a pediatric recipient from a live donor. A six-month-old female patient was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis secondary to biliary atresia and scheduled for LDLT (father as donor). Left lateral hepatectomy was performed at the donor site. The dissection of the left HA, which divided immediately after its origin, showed two branches for segments II and III. The artery for segment III was anastomosed to the recipient HA. The artery for segment II was too short for direct anastomosis with the gastroduodenal artery. After

Superior Mesenteric Artery-Pancreaticoduodenal Arcade Bypass Grafting for Repair of Inferior Pancreaticoduodenal Artery Aneurysm with Celiac Axis Occlusion.

We report a case of an aneurysm of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA), with chronic occlusion of the celiac axis. Both surgical aneurysmectomy and endovascular coil embolization were anticipated to sacrifice IPDA, which could lead to severe acute ischemia in the celiac region. The treatment involved surgical ligation of the aneurysm after bypass grafting from the superior mesenteric artery to the anterior IPDA. A postoperative computed tomography revealed no enhancement of the aneurysm and sufficient collateral blood supply by the patent bypass graft.

Common hepatic artery branching from the superior mesenteric artery with a common trunk of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery and first jejunal artery.

Adachi type VI is a rare celiac artery (CA) variant in which the left gastric and splenic arteries form a gastrosplenic trunk. In this type, the common hepatic artery (CHA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) arise from a hepatomesenteric trunk, and the CHA passes posterior to the portal vein (PV). In addition, a common trunk formed by the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA) and the first jejunal artery (J1A) has been reported in anatomical studies. However, to our knowledge, the concurrent presence of Adachi type VI together with a posteriorly originating IPDA-J1A common trunk has not
