While it has been documented that persons with prolonged schizophrenia have deficits in metacognition and social cognition, it is less clear whether these difficulties are already present during a first episode. To explore this issue we assessed and compared metacognition using the Metacognition Assessment Scale-Abbreviated (MAS-A) and social cognition using the Eyes, Hinting and Bell-Lysaker Emotional Recognition Tests (BLERT) in participants with first episode psychosis (FEP; n=26), participants with a prolonged psychosis (n=72), and a psychiatric control group consisting of persons with a s

We investigated metacognition of agency in adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS) using a computer task in which participants moved the mouse to get the cursor to touch the downward moving X's and avoid the O's. They were then asked to make judgments of performance and judgments of agency. Objective control was either undistorted, or distorted by adding turbulence (i.e., random noise) or a time Lag between the mouse and cursor movements. Participants with HFA/AS used sensorimotor cues available in the turbulence and lag conditions to a lesser extent than control part

INTRODUCTION: Lucid dreaming (LD) involves awareness of being in a dream during REM sleep and depends on the reactivation of metacognitive and reality-monitoring processes. This study tested whether a virtual reality (VR) intervention designed to rehearse lucid-dream-relevant metacognitive routines increases LD rates beyond baseline training, and whether generic VR exposure produces similar effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight participants with low previous LD experience completed a 5-week program of daily dream diaries and reality checks, assigned to: VR-experimental (n = 13), standa

INTRODUCTION: Mental disorders among adolescents are increasing globally, yet access to tailored, evidence-based treatments remains limited. Metacognitive interventions, which target thinking processes influencing emotional regulation and behaviour, have shown promise in adults but remain underexplored in adolescents. This scoping review aimed to map and summarise metacognitive interventions for adolescents (aged 10-19) with mental disorders, examining intervention types, targeted disorders, delivery methods, and reported outcomes.
METHODS: Following JBI methodology for scoping reviews, compr

PURPOSE: When listening to speech in noise, lipreading can facilitate communication. However, beyond its objective benefits, individuals' perceptions of lipreading advantages may influence their motivation to use it in daily interactions. We investigated to what extent older and younger adults are metacognitively aware of lipreading benefits, focusing not only on performance improvements but also on changes in confidence and listening effort and on the internal evaluations (confidence and effort) that shape listening experiences and may influence strategy adoption.
METHOD: Forty participants

There is an abundance of literature on specific learning disabilities (SLDs), but it is mainly focused on young students (primary, middle, and high school). Further investigations on study strategies among undergraduates with SLDs are needed. The present research focused on the efficacy of a training course on study strategies tailored to students with SLDs. Therefore, we tested the efficacy of this training course on a sample of 136 Italian undergraduates with SLDs (46 males and 90 females; Mage = 20.46 SD = 1.60) who attended different types of undergraduate courses: 27.94% humanistic course

Signal detection theory (SDT) has long provided the field of psychology with a simple but powerful model of how observers make decisions under uncertainty. SDT can distinguish sensitivity from response bias and characterize optimal decision strategies. Whereas classical SDT pertains to "type 1" judgments about the world, recent work has extended SDT to quantify sensitivity for metacognitive or "type 2" judgments about one's own type 1 processing, e.g. confidence ratings. Here we further advance the application of SDT to the study of metacognition by providing a formal account of normative meta

Process-based cognitive behavior therapy (PB-CBT) may be informed by identifying shared mechanisms of disorder linked to shared processes of therapeutic change. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a molar pathogenic process common to both generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and metacognitive therapy (MCT) offer separate models of the relationship between RNT and emotional distress. In a pair of related studies, the relative degree to which processes specific to the two models accounted for variability in levels of generalized anxiety and depre

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Comorbidity between major depressive disorder (MDD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent but reasons for this association are unclear. Rumination may activate metacognitive beliefs that contribute to the development and maintenance of rumination and depression. Negative metacognitions can further lead to other dysfunctional coping strategies (i.e., consumption of alcohol). We examined whether alcohol reduces (state) metacognitions, rumination and other disorder-specific processes in a group of individuals suffering from MDD.
METHOD: In an experiment wi

The present study aimed to explore the role of dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs in Eating Disorders (EDs) and their potential associations with core and comorbid symptoms. The Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Maudsley Obsessive- Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) were used to evaluate 44 Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 50 Bulimia Nervosa (BN) patients and 37 controls. Patients featured more dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs which positively correlated with ED and comorbid symptoms.

Recovery for many people with serious mental illness is more than symptom remission or attainment of certain concrete milestones. It can also involve recapturing a previously lost coherent and cohesive sense of self. The authors review several case studies of integrative metacognitive psychotherapy offered to adults with broadly differing clinical presentations. In all the cases, patients demonstrated significant subjective gains and objective improvements-for example, in negative symptoms, in substance use, and in overcoming a history of childhood sexual abuse. By applying this method to vari

Metacognitive Therapy and Pharmacotherapy - Adapted to Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) present a relatively new challenge for adolescent psychotherapy and psychiatry. The evidence of possible treatment approaches is scarce. This paper presents a pragmatic adaptation of Wells' Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) for this population for the first time. Unlike the established trauma-focused treatment approaches MCT does not aim at prolonged exposure to the trauma narrative. Instead, patients shall learn to leave the distressing thoughts alone and to reduce the perseveratin

Dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs ("metacognitions") and executive control are important factors in mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, but the relationship between these concepts has not been studied systematically. We examined whether there is an association between metacognitions and executive control and hypothesized that decreased executive control statistically predicts increased levels of metacognitions. Two hundred and ninety-nine individuals recruited from the general population and outpatient psychiatric clinics completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 and three s

Many psychological models have been developed to explain the development and maintenance of depression. The most widely evaluated model is the cognitive model of depression, and it is against this model that emerging models should be compared. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study examined whether metacognitive beliefs, as specified in the metacognitive model of depression, would explain additional variance in depressive symptoms over dysfunctional attitudes; the core feature of the cognitive model. Moreover, mediational relationships between metacognitive beliefs, rumination, and depressive

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of unknown aetiology, characterised by widespread pain, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. In this paper we examined the relationship metacognitions and the impact of Fibromyalgia in a German sample, detailing the translation and validation of a self-report metacognitive instrument.
METHODS: The Metacognitions about Symptoms Control Scale (MaSCS) was translated into German using the back-forward translation process. A total of 348 patients (316 female and 26 male) with Fibromyalgia contributed data to the study to test the structure and psychometr

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the metacognitive components of anger, and at present there is no metacognitive framework on anger incorporating both positive and negative beliefs about anger and distinct maladaptive processing routines, such as rumination.
AIMS: The aim of the present preliminary studies was to apply a metacognitive framework to anger and put forward a new anger self-report scale, the Metacognitive Anger Processing (MAP) scale, intended as a supplement to existing measures of anger disposition and to enhance anger treatment targets.
METHOD: The new measure was tested

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has suggested that metacognitions may play a role in smoking. The goal of the current set of studies was to develop the first self-report instrument of metacognitions about smoking.
METHOD: We conducted three studies with samples of smokers (n = 222, n = 143, n = 25) to test the structure and psychometric properties of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire and examined its capacity to predict smoking behaviour.
RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a four-factor solution: positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation, positi

Patients with treatment-resistant depression received up to 8 sessions of metacognitive therapy (MCT) targeting attentional control, rumination, worry, and metacognitive beliefs. A baseline period was followed by weekly sessions with follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months post treatment. Large and statistically significant improvements occurred in all symptom measures at post treatment and were maintained over follow-up. Two out of 3 process measures significantly improved at post treatment and all of these measures were improved at follow-up. Treatment was associated with similar response r

Misdiagnosis of the cause of illness in critically ill patients is common, and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We reflect upon a misdiagnosis that occurred in the intensive care unit of a metropolitan teaching hospital, and highlight the susceptibility of medical decision making to error. We examine recent advances in cognitive theory and how these apply to diagnosis. We discuss the vulnerability of such processes and - with particular reference to our case - why even knowledgeable and diligent clinicians are prone to misdiagnose. Finally, we review potential solutions, both educatio

Background: Interpersonal skills deficits and dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of depression. This study aimed to investigate the association between changes in these skills deficits and change in depressive symptoms over the course of treatment with Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT). Methods: In this prospective, parallel group observational study, data was collected at baseline and after 8 weeks of an intensive day clinic psychotherapy program. Based on a shared decision betwee
