Agricultural waste-derived nanoparticles for heavy metal removal from wastewater: a comprehensive review.

Heavy metal contamination of aquatic environments remains a major environmental challenge due to the persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulative nature of metals such as Pb(II), Cd(II), Cr(VI), Hg(II), and As(V). Agricultural waste-derived nanoparticles have recently emerged as promising sustainable adsorbents because of their low cost, high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and strong metal-binding capability. This review critically evaluates recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, adsorption performance, and removal mechanisms of nano-engineered adsorbents produced from agr

Effective bio-activities of the metal nanoparticles mycosynthesized by the plants' fungal endophytes.

Fungal endophytes act as bio-nano factories and are favored over bacteria and plant extracts, as they secrete large quantities of proteins and enzymes, facilitating stable, efficient, and economic nanoparticle synthesis. This review highlights the advantages of plant-associated fungal endophytes as bio-factories for metal nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesis and critically examines the biological activities and potential applications of these MNPs in human health, food technology, and agriculture. Compared to chemical synthesis, biogenic MNPs are more resistant to aggregation due to the involvement

Metal oxide nanoparticles in infectious disease management: Antimicrobial mechanisms, applications, and future perspectives.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the world's health concerns that has been fueled to an extent by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in human and animal medicine and agriculture, which would lead to even more severe spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, which, in turn, would exceed all other causes of death by 2050. In the face of the rapidly declining effectiveness of conventional antibiotics, metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) have emerged as viable antimicrobial candidates due to their nanometer size, large surface area, and reactivity, as well as the ability to be compos

Metal-Substituted Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles as Antimicrobial and Osteogenic Biomaterials for Hard-Tissue Applications.

Bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on orthopedic and dental implants remain major clinical complications, while conventional systemic antibiotics are often limited by poor penetration into biofilms and infected bone. These limitations have motivated the development of biomaterials with intrinsic antibacterial activity. Hydroxyapatite (HA), a major inorganic component of bone and teeth, possesses excellent biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and bone-bonding ability but exhibits limited inherent antibacterial activity. Incorporation of therapeutic metal ions, including Ag+, Cu2+, Zn2

Ultrafine metal nanoparticles isolated on oxide nano-islands as exceptional sintering-resistant catalysts.

Ultrafine nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted extensive research interest, especially in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the inherent sintering propensity of NPs has been a major obstacle to their catalytic stability. Here we report an isolation strategy to preserve highly dispersed ultrafine NPs under extremely harsh conditions. Oxide nano-islands were grafted between the catalyst support and metal NPs, serving as a general approach by following a charge attraction principle. Specifically, LaOx nano-islands were ideally suited for stabilizing Ru NPs among the synthetic library, exhibiting st

Multifunctional metal-phenolic nanoparticles with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects for osteomyelitis management.

Osteomyelitis is a serious inflammatory disease mostly caused by bacterial infections. It is necessary to simultaneously eradicate bacterial cells and inhibit inflammation in treating osteomyelitis. Herein, we design an innovative zinc ion (Zn2+)-based nano delivery system for the management of osteomyelitis. Taking advantage of the coordination self-assembly of Zn2+, quercetin (QU), and ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), Zn2+-containing nanoparticles (denoted as ZQE NPs) are prepared. ZQE NPs are spherical nanoparticles with amorphous structures. They are stable in the physiological neutral environment b

Voltage-Driven Chemical Reactions Enable the Synthesis of Tunable Liquid Ga-Metal Nanoparticles.

Nanosized particles of liquid metals are emerging materials that hold promise for applications spanning from microelectronics to catalysis. Yet, knowledge of their chemical reactivity is largely unknown. Here, we study the reactivity of liquid Ga and Cu nanoparticles under the application of a cathodic voltage. We discover that the applied voltage and the spatial proximity of these two particle precursors dictate the reaction outcome. In particular, we find that a gradual voltage ramp is crucial to reduce the native oxide skin of gallium and enable reactive wetting between the Ga and Cu nanopa

Versatile Coating Platform for Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Applications to Materials and Biological Science.

In this feature article, we provide an overview of our research on statistical copolymers as a coating material for metal oxide nanoparticles and surfaces. These copolymers contain functional groups enabling noncovalent binding to oxide surfaces and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers for colloidal stability and stealthiness. The functional groups are organic derivatives of phosphorous acid compounds R-H2PO3, also known as phosphonic acids that have been screened for their strong affinity to metals and for their multidentate binding ability. Herein we develop a polymer-based coating platform

A proposed synergetic mechanism for metal fume fever involving ZnO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Metal fumes fever (MFF) is an inflammatory condition, whose mechanism is yet unclear, associated with the inhalation of metal fumes, particularly zinc. In this study we investigate experimentally the hypothesis of a two-step mechanism of MFF onset: (1) the photocatalytic production of airborne hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via ZnO and (2) the production of hydroxyl radicals (HOׄ) through Fenton reaction via magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Photocatalysis and Fenton reaction products were measured using a multiscattering-enhanced absorbance device and assessing the degradation of bromophenol blue wi

Tailoring Renal Clearance and Tumor Targeting of Ultrasmall Metal Nanoparticles with Particle Density.

Identifying key factors that govern the in vivo behavior of nanomaterials is critical to the clinical translation of nanomedicines. Overshadowed by size-, shape-, and surface-chemistry effects, the impact of the particle core density on clearance and tumor targeting of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) remains largely unknown. By utilizing a class of ultrasmall metal NPs with the same size and surface chemistry but different densities, we found that the renal-clearance efficiency exponentially increased in the early elimination phase while passive tumor targeting linearly decreased with a decrease

Facile Formation of Metallic Surface with Microroughness via Spray-Coating of Copper Nanoparticles for Enhanced Liquid Metal Wetting.

This paper presents a simple, fast, and cost-effective method for creating metallic microstructured surfaces by spray-coating a dispersion of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) onto polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrates, enabling the imbibition-induced wetting of liquid metal. The formation of these microstructured patterns is crucial for the spontaneous wetting of gallium-based liquid metals. Traditional techniques for producing such microstructures often involve complex and costly lithography and vacuum deposition methods. In contrast, this study demonstrates that liquid metal wetting can occu
