[Occupational exposure and male fertility. Results of an Italian multicenter study in an exposed population].

It was believed that occupational exposure to several toxic agents could negatively affect male fertility. This paper reports the results of a study on the fertility of couples in whom the man was occupationally exposed to three different toxics: metals, solvents and pesticides, having effects on reproduction. Fertility was evaluated during the time that elapsed between attempting and achieving the first pregnancy of the couple (time to pregnancy--TTP). Exposure to occupational risks during the period preceding conception was defined on the basis of data collected from 153 workers of a mint (e

Case-control study of male germ cell tumors nested in a cohort of car-manufacturing workers: Findings from the occupational history.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether the previously observed excess risk of male germ cell cancer in a cohort of car-manufacturing workers can be attributed to occupational activities inside and/or outside the car industry. METHODS: A nested case-control study among workers in six plants included 205 cases of germ cell cancer and 1,105 controls, individually matched by year of birth (±2 years). Job periods of the individual occupational histories were coded based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) and the industrial classification of economic activities (NACE). Odds

Skin deposition of nickel, cobalt, and chromium in production of gas turbines and space propulsion components.

Skin exposure to nickel, cobalt, and chromium may cause sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis and it is known that many alloys and platings may release significant amounts of the metals upon contact with skin. Occupational exposure to these sensitizing metals has been studied in different settings with regards to airborne dust and different biological end points, but little is known about deposition on skin from airborne dust and direct contact with materials containing the metals. In this study, skin deposition was studied in 24 workers in an industry for development and manufacturing

Case-control study of bladder cancer in New Jersey. I. Occupational exposures in white males.

The occupational bladder cancer risk for New Jersey white males was estimated with the use of both industry-job title-based and exposure-based analyses of data from 658 incident cases and 1,258 general population controls. The overall bladder cancer risk attributable to occupational exposures was estimated as 20-22%. A wide variety of employment categories and exposures contributed to this risk. Odds ratios were significantly high for employment as garage and gas station workers and food counter workers and/or cooks and for exposure to leather, rubber, paint, printing ink, and other organic co

Non-fibrous inorganic particles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of pottery workers.

AIM: To study the actual exposure of pottery workers to silica particles, as their risk of silicosis is potentially high because of the presence of inhalable crystalline silica particles in the workplace. METHODS: Nine pottery workers underwent bronchoalveolar lavage. The recovered fluid was analysed for cytological and mineralogical content by analytical transmission electron microscopy. The data were compared with those obtained from a control group composed of seven patients with sarcoidosis and six patients with haemoptysis. RESULTS: Cytological results showed a similar profile in expose

Occupational health and safety, metal exposures and multi-exposures health risk in Canadian electronic waste recycling facilities.

Electronic waste recycling (e-recycling) involves manual operations that expose workers to toxic metals. We aim to describe occupational health and safety practices and workers' exposures to metals in the Canadian formal e-recycling industry, and to estimate the health risk associated with multiple exposures. This cross-sectional study documented practices through observations and questionnaires, and assessed metal exposures using personal air samples and biomarkers. Health risks were estimated relative to recognised occupational exposure guidelines, and using an additive approach for consider

Determinants and Correlates of Occupational Skin Diseases and Workplace Risk Stratification in a Metal Casting Factory: A Cross-Sectional Study From a Rural Coastal Region of Southern India.

Introduction Workers in metal casting industries are routinely exposed to high temperatures, hazardous chemicals, metal fumes, and dust, placing them at significant risk of occupational skin diseases (OSD). Despite the considerable morbidity and productivity loss associated with OSD, systematic assessment in the Indian metal casting industry remains limited. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence, pattern, and determinants of OSD among workers at a private metal casting factory in Goa, India, and to explore the association between personal protective equipment (PPE) use and

Metals in dust fractions emitted at mechanical workstations.

Workers at metal machining workstations are exposed to airborne dust particles containing metals and their compounds. Their harmful impact on the workers' health depends on both their chemical composition and their distribution. The aim of this study was to determine the content of metals in dust fractions emitted in the process of mechanical machining of products made of brass, steel and cast iron. Samples taken during grinding, turning and drilling were tested. The concentration of metals in dust fractions was determined with atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of iron, manganese, ch

Accuracy of dental age estimations based on individual teeth and staging system comparisons.

AIM: To investigate whether a specific tooth or teeth provide the most accurate estimation of chronological age (CA), and determine which of the three staging systems studied represents dental development for an individual tooth. METHOD: Data were collected from 400 digital panoramic radiographs of healthy Saudi children aged 6.00-15.99 years. Each permanent tooth on the left side was evaluated to determine its developmental stage and dental age using the methods by Moorrees, Fanning, and Hunt (MFH) (1963), as adapted by Smith (1991), Gleiser and Hunt (1955), and Nicodemo et al. Occupational genotoxicity among copper smelters.

Occupational exposure in a copper smelting industry may produce various adverse health effects including cancer. Despite a number of well-documented studies reporting an increased risk of cancer among copper smelter workers, the data on genotoxic effects in this industry are scarce. In view of the above, an assessment of DNA damage in peripheral blood leukocytes by Comet assay from copper smelter workers was undertaken. Additionally, the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was assessed to determine the metal content of samples. The study was conducted with all workers from a copper s

Health risks associated with occupational contaminants of heavy metals across different professions.

People in various occupations are chronically exposed to a wide range of workplace pollutants that affect overall health. Among these, certain heavy metals pose a risk even at low concentrations over prolonged exposure. This study aims to examine the health effects of specific heavy metals with chronic exposure in different occupational groups within the Pakistani population. A case-control approach was used, comprising 404 individuals with chronic exposure and 170 age- and gender-matched controls. Volunteers from seven different occupational groups participated in the study, including pump at

Occupational risk factors for kidney cancer: a cohort study in Sweden.

Although many studies have examined the associations between occupational exposures and kidney cancer, the evidence is not consistent. To examine the risk of occupational exposures on kidney cancer, we carried out a follow-up study on the economically active Swedish population, based on the latest update of the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. We calculated standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for different occupational groups, adjusted for age, period, and socioeconomic status. The reference group was all the economically active population. An increased risk o

Lead and cadmium levels in blood among painters and battery workers: A case control study.

Occupational exposure to heavy metals like lead and cadmium remains a significant health concern due to poor workplace awareness and unsafe practices. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluated blood levels of lead, cadmium and oxidative stress markers in occupationally exposed workers (painters and battery workers) compared to controls. Analysis using ICP-MS revealed significantly elevated metal levels in exposed workers, along with decreased antioxidant enzyme activities and increased lipid peroxidation (p < 0.001). Total antioxidant capacity was also significantly reduced, indicating impaire
