Decontamination of metals from firefighter turnout gear.

Firefighters are exposed to many different contaminants during structural fires. Moreover, if their protective gear is not successfully decontaminated, firefighters are at risk of being repeatedly exposed to contaminants from previous fires. Thus, the successful removal of contaminants from firefighter turnout gear is necessary to prevent or reduce repeated exposure risks. Laundering methods can reduce the probability of re-exposure to contaminants, such as heavy metals, thus reducing repeated exposure risks. In this study, the efficiencies of heavy metal removal from the firefighter turnout g

Assessing sediment recontamination from metals in stormwater.

Recontamination of sediments by stormwater is a major concern when evaluating the potential effectiveness of sediment remediation. Stormwater and sediment sampling were conducted in a mixed-use watershed at Paleta Creek in San Diego, CA to evaluate methods for assessing sediment recontamination by metals. Size-segregated stormwater contaminant loads with simultaneous receiving water and sediment measurements were used to identify dominant sources and contaminants with respect to their impact on sediment recontamination. Most of the stormwater contaminant loads of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were associ

Organic monolayers disrupt plastic flow in metals.

Adsorbed films often influence mechanical behavior of surfaces, leading to well-known mechanochemical phenomena such as liquid metal embrittlement and environment-assisted cracking. Here, we demonstrate a mechanochemical phenomenon wherein adsorbed long-chain organic monolayers disrupt large-strain plastic deformation in metals. Using high-speed in situ imaging and post facto analysis, we show that the monolayers induce a ductile-to-brittle transition. Sinuous flow, characteristic of ductile metals, gives way to quasi-periodic fracture, typical of brittle materials, with 85% reduction in defor

Systemic sclerosis and exposure to heavy metals.

As a mirror image of the Roman god Janus Bifrons, the environment has a hidden face. To highlight this hidden face of the environment in the field of systemic sclerosis (SSc) will allow to identify responsible agents emerging in the future. To date, there is, in fact, a growing scientific evidence that environmental factors have a crucial impact on both alterations and modulation of epigenetic determinants, resulting in SSc onset and progression. It has been well established that there is a marked correlation between SSc onset and occupational exposure to crystalline silica and organic solvent

Metals in cosmetics: implications for human health.

Cosmetics, preparations repeatedly applied directly to the human skin, mucous membranes, hair and nails, should be safe for health, however, recently there has been increasing concern about their safety. Unfortunately, using these products in some cases is related to the occurrence of unfavourable effects resulting from intentional or the accidental presence of chemical substances, including toxic metals. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and nickel, as well as aluminium, classified as a light metal, are detected in various types of cosmetics (colour cosmetics, face and body

Thematic minireview series: Metals in Biology 2012.

Metals are present in about one-half of the protein structures available and also have critical roles in nucleic acid biochemistry. This prologue introduces the fourth of the Thematic Minireview Series on Metals in Biology, which deals with several topics involving iron, manganese, copper, and other metals. The six minireviews discuss metal transport and intracellular homeostasis, including chaperones and siderophores, maturation of the diiron active sites in hydrogenases, the balance between manganese and iron, and copper homeostasis relevant to pathogens.

Nitrenium ions as ligands for transition metals.

Unlike N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which are now used ubiquitously in metal-based chemistry, the nitrogen-derived analogue (in which a carbon is replaced with the isoelectronic nitrogen cation, a nitrenium ion) has remained elusive as a ligand for metals. This is especially intriguing, because several other main-group analogues of NHCs have been prepared, and have been shown to coordinate with transition-metal complexes. Here, we describe the preparation of several N-heterocyclic nitrenium ions that are isoelectronic and isostructural to NHCs, and study their ligand properties. The formati

Scrap metals industry perspective on radioactive materials.

With more than 80 reported/confirmed accidental melts worldwide since 1983 and still counting, potential contamination by radioactive materials remains as a major concern among recycled scrap and steel companies. Some of these events were catastrophic and have cost the industry millions of dollars in business and, at the same time, resulted in declining consumer confidence. It is also known that more events with confirmed radioactive contamination have occurred that involve mining of old steel slag and skull dumps. Consequently, the steel industry has since undergone massive changes that incur

Metals in urine and peripheral arterial disease.

Exposure to metals may promote atherosclerosis. Blood cadmium and lead were associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In the present study we evaluated the association between urinary levels of cadmium, lead, barium, cobalt, cesium, molybdenum, antimony, thallium, and tungsten with PAD in a cross-sectional analysis of 790 participants > or =40 years of age in NHANES 1999-2000. PAD was defined as a blood pressure ankle brachial index < 0.9 in at least one leg. Metals were measured in casual (spot) urine specimen

DMT1: a mammalian transporter for multiple metals.

DMT1 has four names, transports as many as eight metals, may have four or more isoforms and carries out its transport for multiple purposes. This review is a start at sorting out these multiplicities. A G185R mutation results in diminished gastrointestinal iron uptake and decreased endosomal iron exit in microcytic mice and Belgrade rats. Comparison of mutant to normal rodents is one analytical tool. Ectopic expression is another. Antibodies that distinguish the isoforms are also useful. Two mRNA isoforms differ in the 3' UTR: +IRE DMT1 has an IRE (Iron Responsive Element) but -IRE DMT1 lacks

Lead and other metals in gestational hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: To identify any effects that lead, calcium, magnesium, and zinc may have on the development of gestational hypertension. METHODS: Third-trimester 110 normotensive and 33 gestational hypertension cases were assayed for various metal levels, using standard techniques, including atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS: Gestational hypertension cases showed significantly higher blood lead levels than normotensives. No differences were noticed regarding calcium (ionized and total), magnesium, and zinc levels. Blood lead was significantly related with blood pressure, even after correct

Metals in Laysan albatrosses from Midway Atoll.

We examined the concentrations of lead, cadmium, selenium, chromium, manganese, arsenic, tin, and mercury in the heart, liver, kidney, salt gland, and feathers of adult (n = 10) and young (n = 15) Laysan albatrosses (Diomedea immutabilis) from Midway Atoll in the north-central Pacific Ocean. Lead poisoning has been reported in some Laysans nesting near buildings on Midway, but other heavy metals have not been examined. We examined tissue distribution of metals by age and gender (adults only). We also examined tissue concentrations in three birds with a droop-wing syndrome characteristic of lea

[Studies of metals and metallothionein in tissue].

This paper is a review of three topics related to bio-trace metals. First, the transfer of metals into tissues of patients with chronic diseases treated with hemodialysis is examined. Such diseases include chronic hepatitis, diabetes, and chronic renal failure. In these diseases, metal contents from fingernails were flexible but non-specific. Toxicity may appear as the amount of heavy metals in tissues of patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis. For example, cadmium and lead were not excreted from the blood of patients during the hemodialysis treatment, and, therefore, th

Glutathione mercaptides as transport forms of metals.

Among the many cellular functions of GSH, the roles of this tripeptide in metal transport, storage, and metabolism have recently received considerable attention. Although these roles had often been overlooked, they are critical for normal cellular metabolism and for protection from xenobiotics. Indeed, a number of the protective and regulatory functions of GSH are related to its ability to chelate reactive metals. GSH functions in the mobilization and delivery of metals between ligands, in the transport of metals across cell membranes, as a source of cysteine for metal binding, and as a reduct

Metals in tumors of the sellar region.

The contents of the metals Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Mn in 7 different entities of tumors of the sellar region were evaluated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Increased values of Mg in coincidence with high Ca contents are explained by the competition of Mg to Ca and its potency to inhibit mineralization. Reports on the frequent coincidence of increased Zn levels with increased Ca levels were confirmed. The pattern of metal contents encountered in some tumors was rather related to the biological state of the tissue than to morphogenesis or descent from any specific embryonic layer. Regres

Bacterial catalytic processes for transformation of metals.

Microorganisms actively participate in the transformation of metals and metalloids by various processes including adsorption, absorption, alkylation, oxidation and reduction reactions. Bacteria of the genera Thiobacillus and Sulfolobus have a chemolithotrophic mode of metabolism and catalyze various metal transformations. These bacteria are primarily involved in oxidation-reduction reactions of metals. Metal sulfides can be either directly oxidized by the microbes or oxidized by ferric iron, an end-product of microbial metabolism. These processes result in solubilization of iron, copper, molyb

Adsorption and elution of metals on hair.

The adsorption of zinc and lead on hair was dependent on the acidity of the hair and/or the medium in which the hair sample was immersed, suggesting that hair is an ion exchanger. The pKa was estimated to be between 4.5 and 5.0. The coexistence of mercuric ion or PCMB reduced zinc adsorption by only a few percent, whereas zinc inhibited mercuric ion adsorption to a greater extent. These facts suggest that the binding sites in hair for metals are located on functional groups like carboxyl groups rather than sulfhydryl groups. The removal and/or elution of metals from hair were observed for 18 e

Of mice and men, metals and mutations.

Several mutations affecting the transport of copper and zinc in humans and in mice have been discovered over the last 15 years, joining the long known disturbance of copper transport in Wilson's disease. Menkes' disease (classical and mild variant forms) and X linked Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (type IX, X linked cutis laxa) have features in common with one another and with the brindled (Mobr) and blotchy (Moblo) mouse mutants, respectively. There may be one allelic series of mutants in each species or two loci may be involved in each. The toxic milk mutant (tx) in the mouse may be homologous to Wi
