The study by Roganović et al. (2025) is, to our knowledge, the first to use road dust to examine rare earth elements in the vicinity of coal-fired thermal power plants and an associated coal-mining area. It reports a pronounced temporal enrichment of dysprosium and evaluates non-carcinogenic hazard through the ingestion pathway. The dataset and the spatial and temporal patterns it documents are a useful contribution to a topic that has received little attention. In this letter we do not question the reported concentrations, the observed patterns, or an appropriately qualified screening-level a

The sustainable separation of rare earth elements (REEs) from complex mixtures remains a critical technological challenge. Biomaterials offer a promising route, but their deployment has been hindered by their limited stability and efficiency. Here, we report a robust elastin-based hydrogel incorporating the lanthanide-binding protein, lanmodulin, for efficient and selective REE separation. A fusion protein of elastin-like polypeptide and lanmodulin was synthesized and cross-linked with four-arm polyethylene glycol to form a porous network that enhances REE binding and release in aqueous enviro

Rare earth elements are integral to modern technology, but their increasing environmental distribution due to anthropogenic activities poses potential health risks to humans. This study utilized zebrafish as a model to assess developmental and locomotor performance effects of europium and samarium. Exposure to Eu or Sm induced a reduction in heart rate, growth inhibition, and morphological deformities. RNA-Seq revealed gene expression alterations linked to critical biological processes and functions following Eu or Sm exposure. Impaired organogenesis in liver and exocrine pancreas, evident thr

Rare earth elements have received a lot of attention in recent years due to their increasing demand in high-tech industries. Cerium is of current interest and is commonly used in different industries and medical applications. Cerium's uses are expanding due to its superior chemical characteristics over other metals. In this study, different functionalized chitosan macromolecule sorbents were developed from shrimp waste for cerium recovery from a leached monazite liquor. The process involves demineralization, deproteinization, deacetylation, and chemical modification steps. A new class of two-m

The adverse health effects of rare earth elements (REEs) on reproductive health remain a subject of debate, and few clinical observations are available. This study investigated the association between light REEs (LREEs) exposure and the outcome of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). We recruited a total of 305 women undergoing IVF-ET in Beijing City and Shandong Province of northern China. Their demographic information and lifestyle characteristics were collected using questionnaires at enrollment. Fasting blood samples were collected on the day before the IVF-ET treatment cycle b

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are crucial for sustainable industrial processes, but current extraction methods are environmentally damaging. Our research explores using proteins that bind REEs as a potentially eco-friendly alternative for purification. Lanmodulin (LanM) is a natural protein known for its extremely strong (picomolar) affinity for REEs. However, LanM's disordered structure makes it challenging for engineering. To overcome this, we developed a protein engineering platform based on the stable 4-Helix Bundle (4HB) framework, which has 3 helix-loop-helix regions. We incorporated the co

The relationship between exposure to rare earth elements (REEs) and osteoarthritis, as well as the underlying mechanism, remain unclear. In 798 Chinese community residents, the associations between urinary REEs and the risk of osteoarthritis were evaluated using logistic regression, weighted quantile sum regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression. Network toxicology analysis was employed to propose potential mechanistic hypotheses. In single analysis, elevated urinary concentrations of praseodymium (odds ratio [OR]: 1.18; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05, 1.32), gadolinium (OR: 1.19;

Gadolinium (Gd) is one of the most commercially exploited rare earth elements, commonly employed in magnetic resonance imaging as a contrast agent. The present review was performed aiming to identify the Gd concentrations in marine and freshwater environments. In addition, information on Gd speciation in the environment is discussed, in order to understand how each chemical form affects its fate in the environment. Biological responses caused by Gd exposure and its bioaccumulation in different aquatic invertebrates are also discussed. This review was devoted to aquatic invertebrates, since thi

Rare earth elements (REE) are vital for modern technologies and considered critical materials. This study investigated monorhamnolipid biosurfactant interactions with REE as the basis for REE recovery technology. Conditional stability constants (log β), measured using a resin-based ion exchange method, are reported for 16 REE and metals. These results were combined with existing data for 10 other metals to assess comparative strength and determinants of binding. The stability constants could be divided into three groups: weakly, moderately, and strongly bound. The REE were all in the strongly

Rare earth (RE) is an important strategic resource; however, there has been a growing concern about the environmental problems caused by RE mining, such as ammonia nitrogen pollution and heavy metal pollution. There is a limited research about the behavior of leaching agents and the fractionation of RE and heavy metal during the mining process for ion adsorption of rare earth ore (IRE-ore) in the previously available papers. In this study, (NH4)2SO4 solution, which commonly used in the production of mining IRE-ore, was used as a leaching agent. The adsorption behavior of ore soils on ammonium

Copper mining generates large quantities of waste, tailings, and acid outflows causing long-term environmental impacts and potential threats to human health. Valea Şesei is the largest tailing impoundment in Romania, created by flooding the valley (known as Valea Şesei) of the Metalliferous Mountains (a division of the Apuseni Mountains) with copper mining waste. The present study (i) estimated the total volume of tailings in this area; (ii) screened the concentration of 65 elements (rare earth and platinum group elements, alkali metals and alkali earth metals, transition and post-transition m

BACKGROUND: Rare earth elements (REEs) are gaining attention due to rapid rise of modern industries and technological developments in their usage and residual fingerprinting. Cryptic entry of REEs in the natural resources and environment is significant; therefore, life on earth is prone to their nasty effects. Scientific sectors have expressed concerns over the entry of REEs into food chains, which ultimately influences their intake and metabolism in the living organisms.
OBJECTIVES: Extensive scientific collections and intensive look in to the latest explorations agglomerated in this documen

Life cycle assessment of recycling rare earths from waste fluorescent powders was conducted, including the uncertainty and sensitivity analyses. Three scenarios were set in this study, namely, recycling with/without final disposal and waste fluorescent powders landfill. Recycling with final disposal presented lower environmental burden than that without final disposal due to the significant reduction of direct emissions. The evident impacts from chemicals and energy production stages were considered the main contributors to the overall environmental burden of recycling with final disposal due

Huelva Estuary is a transition zone where REE-rich acidic waters interact with saline-alkaline seawater. This mixing process influences the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of particulate and dissolved fractions. The Tinto River has >11,000μgL-1 dissolved REE (pH=1.66), whereas seawater only reaches 8.75·10-2μgL-1 dissolved REE (pH=7.87). REE-normalized patterns in "pH<6 solutions" are parallel and show similarities, diminishing their concentration as pH increases. Sequential extraction performed on the generated precipitates of mixed solutions indicates that most REE are associat

This work analyses the spatial distribution, the origin, and the shale-normalised fractionation patterns of the rare earth elements (REE) in the alluvial aquifer of the Guadiamar River (south-western Spain). This river received notoriety in April 1998 for a spill that spread a great amount of slurry (mainly pyrites) and acid waters in a narrow strip along the river course. Groundwaters and surface waters were sampled to analyse, among other elements, the REEs. Their spatial distribution shows a peak close to the mining region, in an area with low values of pH and high concentrations of sulphat

Iron nanoparticles synthesized using Euphorbia cochinchinensis leaf extracts (Ec-FeNPs) showed high selectivity for rare earth elements (REEs) recovery from mining wastewater. REEs recovery efficiencies were > 90 %, with distribution coefficients ranging from 2483.9 to 37500 mL/g, which were consistently much higher than non-REEs (15.0 - 234.8 mL/g). Moreover, even after 5 consecutive reuse cycles, Ec-FeNPs effectively adsorbed > 60 % of REEs. Application of advanced characterization techniques found that the high selectivity of Ec-FeNPs for REEs was mainly due to the biomolecules present in t
