Trends in concentration of ground-level ozone and meteorological conditions during high ozone episodes in the Kao-Ping Airshed, Taiwan.

This work analyzes the variations in daily maximum 1-hr ozone (O3) concentrations and the long-term trends in annual means of hourly ambient concentrations of O3, nitrogen oxides (nitrous oxide + nitrogen dioxide), and nonmethane hydrocarbons in the three administrative regions of Kao-Ping airshed in southern Taiwan over a recent 8-yr period. The annual or monthly means of all maxima, most 95th percentiles, and some 90th percentiles of the daily maximum 1-hr O3 concentrations exceed the daily limit of 120 parts per billion by volume in all three regions, namely, Kao-hsiung City, Kso-hsiung Cou

Particulate air pollution and daily mortality in Steubenville, Ohio.

Particulate air pollution has been associated with daily mortality in London, England, both in the smog episodes of the 1950s and at the lower pollution levels of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Replicating these findings in the United States has been difficult, because particulates are usually sampled every sixth day. Replication, particularly with a gravimetric measure of particulates, is important in assessing the causality of the relation. Daily measurements of total suspended particulates by high volume gravimetric sampler are available for the Steubenville, Ohio, metropolitan area. These

"A contribution towards the study of Madrid air mycoflora. II. Genus Cladosporium".

The genus Cladosporium was isolated from the atmospheric air of Madrid with a high frequency and proportion being found in the four areas, tested. No significant differences existed between them. From the study of the correlation matrices of the number of colonies of Cladosporium with meteorological and chemical contamination parameters, we can conclude that mean temperature, relative atmospheric humidity and carbon monoxide level seem to have a positive influence on the concentration of Cladosporium spores in atmospheric air. On the other hand, the direction of the wind and the level of sulfu

Tempest from Tehachapi takes toll or Coccidioides conveyed aloft and afar.

New cases of acute primary coccidioidomycosis in large numbers resulted from a windstorm that blew through Kern County, California, on December 20, 1977. In most of these cases clinically apparent infections developed in early and mid-January 1978 and occurred not only in persons exposed directly to the dust raised by the windstorm but also among those in many areas to the north and west of Kern County. The exposure to the dustborne Coccidioides immitis was brief because of the arrival of drenching rains, but the continued heavy rainfall increased the potential for large numbers of cases of co

Prediction, lag and mixture effects of meteorology and pollutants on the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in Jining City, China.

BACKGROUND: The burden of pulmonary tuberculosis in China continues to increase, and the potential impact of environmental changes warrants serious attention. While the association between meteorological factors and pulmonary tuberculosis has garnered increasing interest, relatively few studies have examined the effects of air pollutants on the disease. Leveraging real-world evidence, this study aims to investigate the potential long-term effects of exposure to both meteorological variables and air pollutants on the incidence of various forms of pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS: We obtained dai

Association between meteorological factors and varicella incidence in Japan: a nationwide time-series study.

Varicella, commonly referred to as chickenpox, is an airborne infectious disease that continues to pose an increasing threat to public health. Despite previous investigations, the global accumulation of epidemiological studies exploring the association between varicella epidemics and meteorological factors remains insufficient. This study aimed to quantify the short-term effect of meteorological factors, such as mean temperature and relative humidity, on the incidence of varicella across all 47 prefectures of Japan over a decade (2010-2019). Using a two-stage time-series modelling design, we f

Spatiotemporal associations between hand, foot and mouth disease and meteorological factors over multiple climate zones.

Prior studies of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have often observed inconsistent results regarding meteorological factors. We propose the hypothesis that these meteorological associations vary in regions because of the heterogeneity of their geographical characteristics. We have tested this hypothesis by applying a geographical detector and Bayesian space-time hierarchy model to measure stratified spatiotemporal heterogeneity and local associations between meteorological factors and HFMD risk in five climate zones in China from January 2016 to December 2017. We found a significant spatia

Impact of Selected Meteorological Factors on COVID-19 Incidence in Southern Finland during 2020-2021.

We modelled the impact of selected meteorological factors on the daily number of new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa in southern Finland from August 2020 until May 2021. We applied a DLNM (distributed lag non-linear model) with and without various environmental and non-environmental confounding factors. The relationship between the daily mean temperature or absolute humidity and COVID-19 morbidity shows a non-linear dependency, with increased incidence of COVID-19 at low temperatures between 0 to -10 °C or at low absolute humidi

Spatial homogeneity pursuit of regression coefficients for hand, foot and mouth disease in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 2018.

To explore the complex spatial pattern between the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and meteorological factors [average temperature (AT), average relative humidity (ARH), average air pressure (AP), average wind speed (AW)], this paper constructed a Spatial Clustering coefficient (SCC) regression model to detect spatial clustering patterns of each regression coefficients in different seasons. The results revealed that compared with geographically weighted regression (GWR), the coefficients estimated by SCC method were more smooth with clearly identified spatial and improved edg

Meteorological variables associated with the temporal oviposition rate of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Resistencia city, Chaco province, Northeastern Argentina.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue virus in South America. In the last fifteen years, Argentina has suffered three large dengue outbreaks: one in 2009, another one in 2016 and the current 2020 outbreak, with 26,000, 66,000 and more than 43,000 confirmed cases, respectively. These outbreaks are associated with the circulation of the virus in neighboring countries due to the constant movement of people across the frontier. In 2009, the main province affected was Chaco province, with 11,037 confirmed cases (50% of total cases). Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the temporal

The threshold effects of meteorological factors on Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in China, 2011.

We explored the threshold effects of meteorological factors on hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in mainland China to improve the prevention and early warning. Using HFMD surveillance and meteorological data in 2011, we identified the threshold effects of predictors on the monthly incidence of HFMD and predicted the high risk months, with classification and regression tree models (CART). The results of the classification tree showed that there was an 82.35% chance for a high risk of HFMD when the temperature was greater than 24.03 °C and the relative humidity was less than 60.9% during non-a

Identifying high-risk areas of bacillary dysentery and associated meteorological factors in Wuhan, China.

Spatial distribution of bacillary dysentery incidence was mapped at the district level in Wuhan, China. And a generalized additive time series model was used to examine the effect of daily weather factors on bacillary dysentery in the high-risk areas, after controlling for potential confounding factors. Central districts were found to be the high-risk areas. The time series analysis found an acute effect of meteorological factors on bacillary dysentery occurrence. A positive association was found for mean temperature (excess risk (ER) for 1°C increase being 0.94% (95% confidence interval (CI):

Influence of aerosol spectrum and air pollutants on fog formation in urban environment of megacity Delhi, India.

Urban areas are facing increasing fog frequencies that may result due to increased air pollution emanating from variety of sources. The increased pollution levels may lead to the atmospheric reactions resulting into the formation of secondary pollutants that may also lead to increased aerosol number concentrations (ANC) in the atmosphere. This could cause enhanced water aerosols in the presence of favourable meteorological conditions and high relative humidity. This study deals with the atmospheric pollution and visibility during winter season of megacity Delhi in order to assess the relations
