Clinical infectious diseases : an official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America2005eng
We describe a patient who developed daptomycin-resistant, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) during an episode of presumed septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein. Although daptomycin is an alternative agent for treatment of drug-resistant gram-positive bacterial infections, development of resistance during prolonged use may occur with MRSA bacteremia from a persistent focus.

Staphylococcus aureus causes a variety of minor diseases but also is responsible for staphylococcal pneumonia and sepsis, both of which can be fatal. It is thought to be responsible for many of the pneumonia deaths associated with the influenza pandemics of the 20th century. The introduction of penicillin in the 1940s greatly improved the prognosis for patients with severe staphylococcal infections. However, after a few years of clinical use, most staphylococcal strains were able to hydrolyze penicillin by producing b-lactamases, making penicillin a useless antibiotic to treat staphylococcal i

We reviewed the records of 20 patients with bacteremia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 49 patients with methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) bacteremia occurring during a 39-month period. Sixteen of the MRSA bacteremias were clinically significant, as were 42 of the MSSA bacteremias. MRSA bacteremia was almost always nosocomial and occurred mainly in very young patients who were often prematurely born and severely compromised by underlying diseases. In contrast patients with MSSA bacteremia were frequently older children who had no underlying disease and ac

AIMS: Methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA, respectively) in the nostrils of dogs and workers at an animal shelter were cultured. Staphylococcal toxin genes were analysed to identify potential health concerns.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples were obtained from 441 dogs and 9 workers. The respective isolation rates of S. aureus and MRSA were 49·0% (216/441) and 1·6% (7/441) for shelter dogs and 44·4% (4/9) and 33·3% (3/9) for workers, respectively. Isolation of S. aureus in summer (61·9%) and in adult dogs (59·2%) were significantly higher than thos

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones pose a significant threat to hospitalised patients because the bacteria can be transmitted by asymptomatic carriers within healthcare facilities. To date, nothing is known about the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA among healthcare workers in Madagascar. The objective of our study was to examine the prevalence and clonal epidemiology of nasal S. aureus and MRSA among healthcare workers and non-medical University students in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
METHODS: This cross sectional study screened nasal swabs taken from student

Bacterial infections remain the leading killer worldwide which is worsened by the continuous emergence of antibiotic resistance. In particular, methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are prevalent and the latter can be difficult to treat. The traditional strategy of novel therapeutic drug development inevitably leads to emergence of resistant strains, rendering the new drugs ineffective. Therefore, rejuvenating the therapeutic potentials of existing antibiotics offers an attractive novel strategy. Plectasin, a defensin antimicrobial peptide, potenti

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in health care facilities and in the community, and can cause invasive infections, sepsis, and death. Despite progress in preventing methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections in health care settings, assessment of the problem in both health care and community settings is needed. Further, the epidemiology of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) infections is not well described at the national level.
METHODS: Data from the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) MRSA population surveillance (2005-2016) and from the Pr

Electropolishing of stainless steel has been thoroughly investigated as a prophylactic measure to prevent bacterial colonization of orthopaedic implants and infection. Initial bacterial adhesion onto surgical drill bits as a possible factor for orthopaedic surgical site infections has not yet been documented. The present study investigated the influence of electropolishing on initial staphylococcal adhesion onto AISI 440A stainless steel drill bits. Specifically, one methicillin-susceptible standard laboratory Staphylococcus aureus type strain (DSM 20231T), one methicillin-resistant S. aureus

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a commensal and a common opportunistic pathogen causing mainly infections of the integumentary system in dogs. The recent emergence of multidrug-resistant S. pseudintermedius isolates, in particular methicillin-resistant strains (MRSP) is a threat to small animal health and highlights the need for antimicrobial resistance surveillance to detect trends and potentially perform timeous interventions. We systematically reviewed 202 published articles to investigate temporal changes in antimicrobial resistance in clinical and commensal S. pseudintermedius isolated

BACKGROUND: Several series predicting the prognosis of staphylococcal prosthetic joint infection (PJI) managed with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) have been published, but some of their conclusions are controversial. At present, little is known regarding the efficacy of the different antibiotics that are used or their ability to eliminate methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infection.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, multicenter, observational study of cases of PJI by S. aureus that were managed with DAIR (2003-2010). Cases were classified as failures when infecti

We report recurrent bacteremia due to mixed infection with two clonally derived isolates of Staphylococcus aureus in a patient with Sezary syndrome. The two isolates, one gentamicin resistant and methicillin susceptible and the other gentamicin susceptible and methicillin resistant, developed by the deletion of the mecA, ant(4')Ia, and aacA-aphD genes from a common gentamicin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible ancestor.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is associated with high mortality. Whether cefazolin or an antistaphylococcal penicillin should be preferred for the treatment of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus bacteremia is unclear.
METHODS: In an ongoing international Bayesian adaptive platform trial, we conducted an open-label, randomized comparison of cefazolin with an antistaphylococcal penicillin (flucloxacillin or cloxacillin) in adult patients with penicillin-resistant, methicillin-susceptible S. aureus bacteremia. The primary outcome, which was evaluated with a hierarchical Bayesian lo

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infection (BSI) is a serious public health concern. At times, MRSA is isolated from the blood along with other pathogens, the significance and consequences of which are not well described. This study aims to outline the clinical characteristics and outcomes of those with polymicrobial MRSA BSI compared with those with monomicrobial MRSA BSI. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of those with and without polymicrobial MRSA BSI from 2014 to 2022 at a single quaternary care center in New York City. Risk factors and outcomes

In the medical community, antibiotics are revered as a miracle because they stop diseases brought on by pathogenic bacteria. Antibiotics have become the cornerstone of contemporary medical advancements ever since penicillin was discovered. Antibiotic resistance developed among germs quickly, placing a strain in the medical field. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Since 1961, has emerged as the major general antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMR) worldwide. MRSA can easily transmit across the hospital system and has mostly gained resistance to medications called beta-lactamase

Spontaneous methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) meningitis is extremely rare and has a high mortality rate. We report a case of MRSA meningitis in an otherwise healthy young adult female with no recent trauma or neurosurgical interventions. Despite antibiotics she suffered a vasculitis-induced cerebral vascular ischemic event.

We report characterization of a methicillin-susceptible, vancomycin-resistant bloodstream isolate of Staphylococcus aureus recovered from a patient in Brazil. Emergence of vancomycin resistance in methicillin-susceptible S. aureus would indicate that this resistance trait might be poised to disseminate more rapidly among S. aureus and represents a major public health threat.

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has proven to be a prominent pathogen in hospitals and in the community, which is capable of causing a variety of severe infections. Until now, there has been a limited antimicrobial armamentarium for use against MRSA, of which glycopeptides and linezolid are the main agents used.
AREAS COVERED: This review assesses current treatment and the agents being developed for MRSA infections. A search was conducted in PubMed for English-language references published from 2000 to 2013, using combinations of the following terms: 'MRSA', '

Pan-European surveillance of bacteraemia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) shows it to be a problem affecting all European countries, although there is marked geographical variation in prevalence. Although the proportion of S. aureus bacteraemia due to MRSA is declining in many countries, data from the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS) for 2008 showed that in more than one-third of countries the proportion remained >25%. In contrast to bacteraemia, community-associated MRSA infection in Europe remains relatively uncommon. However, there ap

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has been recognized for over a decade, and usually refers to MRSA identified in previously healthy individuals with no recognized MRSA risk factors. Infections range from minor skin and soft tissue infections, through to severe pneumonia and necrotizing fasciitis. This review summarizes the current data on the epidemiology and molecular features of CA-MRSA, in addition to diagnosis and therapeutic measures. We also refer to current national guidelines for the management of these infections. Areas of agreement include th
