Antioxidative, anticancer, and antibacterial activities of a nanogel containing Mentha spicata L. essential oil and electrospun nanofibers of polycaprolactone-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

BACKGROUND: As the largest organ, the skin has been frequently affected by trauma, chemical materials, toxins, bacterial pathogens, and free radicals. Recently, many attempts have been made to develop natural nanogels that, besides hydrating the skin, could also be used as antioxidant or antibacterial agents. METHODS: In this study, the chemical composition of the Mentha spicata essential oil was first investigated using GC-MS analysis. Its nanoemulsion-based nanogel was then investigated; successful loading of the essential oil in the nanogel was confirmed using FTIR analysis. Besides, nanog

Spray drying-assisted development of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate microparticles for andrographolide delivery: an in-vivo study in experimental ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease distinguished by colonic inflammation and mucosal injury; therefore, targeted suppression of underlying inflammatory pathways represents a rational strategy for developing an effective drug delivery system. In the current investigation, Andrographolide (ADG) loaded pH-responsive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate-based microparticles (ADG-HPMC-AS MPs) were engineered by spray-drying technique and optimized using Box-Behnken Design to achieve desirable physicochemical and biopharmaceutical attributes. Optimized ADG

An in situ Gelling System Based on Methylcellulose and Tranilast Solid Nanoparticles Enhances Ocular Residence Time and Drug Absorption Into the Cornea and Conjunctiva.

We previously developed ophthalmic formulations containing tranilast nanopartaicles (ophthalmic TL-NPs formulations), and found them to show high uptake into ocular tissues. In this study, we aimed to design an in situ gel incorporating TL-NPs with 0.5-3% methylcellulose (MC, type SM-4) to ensure long residence time of the drug at the ocular surface. The ophthalmic TL-NPs formulations were prepared by the bead mill method, which yielded a mean particle size of ~93 nm with or without MC (0.5-3%). Although the dispersibility of TL particles in ophthalmic formulations increased with the MC conten

Influence of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose on Metronidazole Crystallinity in Spray-Congealed Polyethylene Glycol Microparticles and Its Impact with Various Additives on Metronidazole Release.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a hydrophilic polymer, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), on the crystallinity and drug release of metronidazole (MNZ) in spray-congealed polyethylene glycol (PEG) microparticles and to further modify the drug release using other additives in the formulation. HPMC has been used in many pharmaceutical formulations and processes but to date, it has not been employed as an additive in spray congealing. Crystallinity of a drug is especially important to the development of pharmaceutical products as active pharmaceutical ingredients (API

Treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media with ofloxacin in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ear drops: a clinical/bacteriological study in a rural area of Malawi.

Chronic suppurative otitis media in young children is a major problem in Africa, with socio-economic consequences at a later age. Common treatment regimens with antibiotics are expensive and often not practically feasible. Therefore, a project was started to develop a low-cost and effective treatment in a rural area of Malawi by studying the clinical efficacy of an inexpensive application regimen of ofloxacin (0.075%) in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (1.5%) ear drops. In earlier studies with this treatment regimen, it was possible to cure approximately 70% of ears. The aim of this study was to

Obsidian, Waste Ceramic Powder, and Recycled Concrete Powder as Alternative Aggregates in Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose-Stabilized Foamed Concrete: Mechanical, Thermal, and Durability Performance.

The substitution of conventional materials with alternative resources is a significant approach for enhancing the engineering performance and sustainability of foamed concrete (FC). While supplementary cementitious materials, volcanic materials, and waste-derived materials have been extensively investigated, the use of obsidian as an alternative aggregate in FC systems remains largely unexplored, and the combined, systematic comparative use of obsidian, waste ceramic powder (WCP), and recycled concrete powder (RCP) within a unified experimental framework has not been previously investigated. Structure-Property Relationships of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Films Reinforced with Cellulose Nanocrystals Enriched in Cellulose I and Cellulose II from Different Agricultural Residues.

Converting agricultural waste into cellulose nanocrystals provides a sustainable route for producing biodegradable packaging materials. This study investigated how the crystalline polymorphism of CNCs from different agricultural residues influences the structure-property relationships of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) nanocomposite films. Cellulose I-rich CNCs from durian rind (CNC I) and cellulose II-rich CNCs from sugarcane bagasse (CNC II) were directly compared under identical HPMC film-forming conditions at a fixed CNC loading to clarify their effects on film structure and performan

Novel self-setting cements based on tricalcium silicate/(β-tricalcium phosphate/monocalcium phosphate anhydrous)/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose: From hydration mechanism to biological evaluations.

Despite the clinical success of tricalcium silicate (TCS)-based materials in endodontics, the inferior handling characteristic, poor anti-washout property and slow setting kinetics hindered their wider applications. To solve these problems, an injectable fast-setting TCS/β-tricalcium phosphate/monocalcium phosphate anhydrous (β-TCP/MCPA) cement was developed for the first time by incorporation of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and β-TCP/MCPA. The physical-chemical characterization (setting time, anti-washout property, injectability, compressive strength, apatite mineralization and sealin

Trypanosoma brucei gambiense: HMI-9 medium containing methylcellulose and human serum supports the continuous axenic in vitro propagation of the bloodstream form.

Trypanosoma brucei (T.b.) gambiense causes the chronic form of human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness. One of the major problems with studying T.b. gambiense is the difficulty to isolate it from its original host and the difficult adaptation to in vivo and in vitro mass propagation. The objective of this study was to evaluate if an established method for axenic culture of pleomorphic bloodstream form T.b. brucei strains, based on methylcellulose containing HMI-9 medium, also facilitated the continuous in vitro propagation of other bloodstream form Trypanozoon strains, in particular

Fabrication and characterisation of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/ethyl cellulose/polyvinylpyrrolidone based composite wafers as an anti-bacterial dressing: a promising approach for curcumin delivery.

Wound healing is a complicated biological process primarily involving tissue regeneration and repair. However, conditions such as infection, poor blood circulation, or long-term illnesses/chronic diseases (like diabetes) can impede the healing process and cause delayed recovery. In order to address these challenges, authors developed wafers. The prepared wafers have emerged as a promising solution due to their ease of application, excellent biocompatibility, and ability to maintain a moist wound environment. These porous, sponge-like systems can also be loaded with bioactive agents, enabling s

Management of irritable bowel syndrome in primary care: the results of an exploratory randomised controlled trial of mebeverine, methylcellulose, placebo and a self-management website.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with IBS suffer on-going symptoms. The evidence base is poor for IBS drugs but they are widely prescribed and advised in Guidelines. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be helpful, but availability is poor in the NHS. We developed a web-based CBT self-management programme (Regul8) in partnership with patients and trialled it and common IBS medications in an exploratory factorial RCT to test trial procedures and provide information for a larger trial. METHODS: Patients, 16 to 60 years, with IBS symptoms fulfilling Rome III criteria were recruited via GP practices

3D bioprinted photo crosslinkable GelMA/methylcellulose hydrogel mimicking native corneal model with enhanced in vitro cytocompatibility and sustained keratocyte phenotype for stromal regeneration.

Corneal transplantation serves as the standard clinical therapy for serious corneal disorders. However, rejection of grafts, significant expenditures, and most crucially, the global donor shortage, may affect the outcome. Recently, 3D bioprinting using biodegradable polymeric materials has become a suitable method for creating tissue replicas with identical architecture. One such most renowned material is GelMA, for its scaffold's three-dimensional structure, biocompatibility, robust mechanics, and favourable optical transmittance. However, GelMA's inadequate viscosity to print at body tempera

Development and characterization of cellulose nanofiber reinforced hydroxypropyl methylcellulose films functionalized with propolis-loaded zein nanoparticles and its application for cheddar cheese storage.

Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) reinforced hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) films were functionalized with propolis-loaded zein nanoparticles (ZNP) to develop active, printable, and heat-sealable films. The films with 0, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, or 0.75 mg/mL propolis-loaded ZNP, named 0ZNP, 0.10ZNP, 0.25ZNP, 0.50ZNP, and 0.75ZNP, respectively, were characterized for their mechanical, physicochemical, structural, functional and optical properties and antioxidant activity. The addition of propolis-loaded ZNP did not change tensile strength (P > 0.05), but increased elongation at break (from 24.72 to 36.
