Synthesis of 1,4-Thiazepines.

An efficient, general, and unprecedented methodology for the synthesis of 2-methylene-2,3-dihydro-1,4-thiazepines from N-propargylic β-enaminones is described. Initially, N-propargylic β-enaminones were thionated with Lawesson's reagent in good to high yields, and then the resulting N-propargylic β-enaminothiones were subjected to electrophilic cyclization. When treated with zinc chloride in refluxing chloroform, N-propargylic β-enaminothiones underwent electrophilic cyclization to yield 2-methylene-2,3-dihydro-1,4-thiazepines in good to high yields. A general trend was observed for all N-prop

Synthesis, and spectroscopic studies of charge transfer complex of 1,2-dimethylimidazole as an electron donor with π-acceptor 2,4-dinitro-1-naphthol in different polar solvents.

The charge transfer (CT) complex of 1,2-dimethylimidazole (DMI) as an electron donor with π acceptor 2,4-dinitro-1-naphthol (DNN) has been studied spectrophotometrically in different solvents like chloroform, acetonitrile, methanol, methylene chloride, etc. at room temperature. The CT complex which is formed through the transfer of lone pair electrons from DMI to DNN exhibits well resolved CT bands and the regions of these bands were remarkably different from those of the donor and acceptor. The stoichiometry of the CT complex was found to be 1:1 by a straight-line method between donor and acc

Degradation of mixtures of aromatic and chloroaliphatic hydrocarbons by aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria.

The well-characterized toluene-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas putida PaW1, P. putida F1, P. mendocina KR1, Burkholderia cepacia G4, B. cepacia JS150, and Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, as well as several strains of bacteria isolated from activated sludge, were examined for their ability to degrade mixtures of aromatic and chloroaliphatic hydrocarbons. Collectively, the strains tested were able to transform all of the 14 aromatic hydrocarbons included in the mixtures, with most strains degrading five or more. Few strains degraded trichloroethylene well under these conditions, only one degraded methy

Chemoselective Cleavage of p-Methoxybenzyl and 2-Naphthylmethyl Ethers Using a Catalytic Amount of HCl in Hexafluoro-2-propanol.

A new, fast, mild and chemoselective deprotection method to cleave p-methoxybenzyl and 2-naphthylmethyl ethers using catalytic amounts of hydrochloric acid in a 1:1 mixture of hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and methylene chloride (DCM) is described. The scope of the methodology becomes apparent from 14 examples of orthogonally protected monosaccharides that are subjected to HCl/HFIP treatment. The applicability of the HCl/HFIP method is illustrated by the synthesis of a sulfated β-mannuronic acid disaccharide.

Transforming activities of trichloroethylene and proposed industrial alternatives.

Three chlorinated hydrocarbons, proposed or already in use as industrial substitutes for the hydrocarbon trichloroethylene, were tested for in vitro transforming potential in a Fischer rat embryo cell system (F1706), which previously has been shown to be sensitive to transformation by chemical carcinogens. Trichloroethylene and the three substitutes (1, 1, 1 trichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene and methylene chloride) all were found to induce transformation, the three substitutes being equal or more efficient transforming agents.

Chloride-associated adaptive response in aerobic methylotrophic dichloromethane-utilising bacteria.

Aerobic methylotrophic bacteria able to grow with dichloromethane (DCM) as the sole carbon and energy source possess a specific glutathione S-transferase, DCM dehalogenase, which transforms DCM to formaldehyde, used for biomass and energy production, and hydrochloric acid, which is excreted. Evidence is presented for chloride-specific responses for three DCM-degrading bacteria, Methylobacterium extorquens DM4, Methylopila helvetica DM6 and Albibacter methylovorans DM10. Chloride release into the medium was inhibited by sodium azide and m -chlorophenylhydrazone, suggesting an energy-dependent p

Strong metal-support interaction boosts the activity and stability of CeO2 supported Pt nanocatalysts for dichloromethane oxidation.

Developing efficient catalysts with excellent chlorine resistance and oxidation activity is highly desirable for the elimination of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). Metal-support interactions are pivotal for optimizing catalyst performance in many key chemical reactions, yet their governing mechanisms over both catalytic activity and durability remain largely elusive, particularly in the CVOCs catalytic oxidation. Herein, to serve as model catalysts, four Pt/CeO2 catalysts with similar Pt sizes and loadings but distinct Pt-CeO2 interaction strengths were synthesized via differen

Towards characterizing LNAPLs and DNAPLs co-transport under groundwater table fluctuation conditions.

The transport behavior of pollutants under dynamic groundwater conditions has attracted significant attention recently. However, there is limited research on the simultaneous effects of groundwater table fluctuations on the transport of co-existing pollutants, especially combined dense and light non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs and LNAPLs). In this study, column experiments investigated toluene and dichloromethane transport in a controlled water table system with varying fluctuation conditions. Results showed that both dichloromethane and toluene accumulated near the groundwater table under s

Proteogenomics of the novel Dehalobacterium formicoaceticum strain EZ94 highlights a key role of methyltransferases during anaerobic dichloromethane degradation.

Dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride) is a toxic, high-volume industrial pollutant of long-standing. Anaerobic biodegradation is crucial for its removal from contaminated environments, yet prevailing mechanisms remain unresolved, especially concerning dehalogenation. In this study, we obtained an assembled genome of a novel DCM-degrading strain, Dehalobacterium formicoaceticum strain EZ94, from a stable DCM-degrading consortium, and we analyzed its proteome during degradation of DCM. A gene cluster recently predicted to play a major role in anaerobic DCM catabolism (the mec cassette) was f

Control synthesis of mesoporous silica microparticles: Optimization and in vitro cytotoxicity studies.

The current paper explains how to make mesoporous silica microparticles (MSM) by mixing water and dichloromethane. Several dichloromethane-water ratios were used to adjust the reaction mixture for the first time to easily synthesize mesoporous silica micro particles with regulated particle size. By carefully modifying the concentrations of water and dichloromethane, a higher level of consistency was achieved in the production of micro particles, i.e. to a 2:1 v/v ratio. It was discovered that variations in the dichloromethane-to-water ratios significantly affect the surface roughness and morph

Efficient degradation of aqueous dichloromethane by an enhanced microbial electrolysis cell: Degradation kinetics, microbial community and metabolic mechanisms.

Dichloromethane (DCM) has been listed as a toxic and harmful water pollutant, and its removal needs attention. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are viewed as a promising alternative for pollutant removal, which can be strengthened from two aspects: microbial inoculation and acclimation. In this study, the MEC for DCM degradation was inoculated with the active sludge enhanced by Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13 (strain H13) and then acclimated in the form of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Both the introduction of strain H13 and the initiation in MFC form significantly promoted DCM degradation.

Evaluation of alternate hosts for recombinant expression of a reductive dehalogenase.

Organohalides are recalcitrant, toxic environmental pollutants. Reductive dehalogenase enzymes (RDases) found in organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB) utilise organohalides as electron acceptors for cellular energy and growth, producing lesser-halogenated compounds. Consequently, microbial reductive dehalogenation via organohalide respiration represents a promising solution for clean-up of organohalide pollutants. Dehalobacter sp. UNSWDHB is an OHRB capable of respiring highly toxic chloroform (CF) and converting it to dichloromethane (DCM). TmrA has been identified as an RDase responsible fo

Spectroscopic investigation of preferential solvation of N-confused tetraphenylporphyrinin binary mixtures of dichloromethane with organic cosolvents.

Spectroscopic behaviour of porphyrin is known to be sensitive to the choice of the solvent and has been used to probe solvation phenomena. The UV-visible spectra of N-confused tetraphenylporphyrin are observed in a series of binary solvent mixtures - (dichloromethane + diethyl ether), (dichloromethane + chlorobenzene) and (dichloromethane + ethyl acetate). The resulting ET scale for NCTPP solvation indicates nonlinear behaviour and preferential solvation by a solvent-solvent complex in all the three solvents - with the dichloromethane + ethyl acetate system showing the largest deviation from i

Evaluation of the Flexibility for Catalytic Ozonation of Dichloromethane over Urchin-Like CuMnOx in Flue Gas with Complicated Components.

The evaluation of the poisoning effect of complex components in practical gas on DCM (dichloromethane) catalytic ozonation is of great significance for enhancing the technique's environmental flexibility. Herein, Ca, Pb, As, and NO/SO2 were selected as a typical alkaline-earth metal, heavy metal, metalloid, and acid gas, respectively, to evaluate their interferences on catalytic behaviors and surface properties of an optimized urchin-like CuMn catalyst. Ca/Pb loading weakens the formation of oxygen vacancies, oxygen mobility, and acidity due to the fusion of Mn-Ca/Pb-O, leading to their inferi

Effect of water flow on the release flux of dense non-aqueous phase liquids from the riverbed-take dichloromethane as an example.

This research is intended to study the effect of water flow on the release flux of DNAPLs, which have been deposited on the riverbed surface after sudden water pollution accidents. Those contaminants will slowly diffuse from the riverbed into the overlying water body through hydrodynamic action, causing ongoing and serious water pollution. By taking dichloromethane as a typical contaminant, the release form under different hydrodynamic conditions was observed through flume experiments, and the response relationship between the release flux and hydrodynamic factors was analyzed, with an emphasi
