Enhanced removal of mixed VOCs with different hydrophobicities by Tween 20 in a biotrickling filter: Kinetic analysis and biofilm characteristics.

Mass transfer limitation usually causes the poor performance of biotrickling filters (BTFs) for the treatment of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during long-term operation. In this study, two identical lab-scale BTFs were established to remove a mixture of n-hexane and dichloromethane (DCM) gases using non-ionic surfactant Tween 20 by Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1 and Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13. A low pressure drop (≤110 Pa) and a rapid biomass accumulation (17.1 mg g-1) were observed in the presence of Tween 20 during the startup period (30 d). The removal efficiency (RE) of

Sulfamethoxazole degradation by Aeromonas caviae and co-metabolism by the mixed bacteria.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a frequently detected antibiotic in the environment and has attracted much attention. Aeromonas caviae strain GLB-10 was isolated, which could degrade SMX to Aniline and 3-Amino-5-methylisoxazole. Compared to the single bacteria, the mixed bacteria including stain GLB-10, Vibrio diabolicus strain L2-2, Zobellella taiwanensis, Microbacterium testaceum, Methylobacterium, etc, had an ultrahigh degradation efficiency to SMX, with 250 mg/L SMX being degraded in 3 days. In addition to bioproducts of single bacteria, SMX bioproducts by the mixed bacteria also included acetan

Differential Microbial Signature Associated With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Cancer.

Apart from other risk factors, chronic inflammation is also associated with the onset of Prostate Cancer (PCa), wherein pathogen infection and tissue microbiome dysbiosis are known to play a major role in both inflammatory response and cancer development. However, except for a few studies, the link between microbes and PCa remained poorly understood. To explore the potential microbiome signature associated with PCa in Indian patients, we investigated differential compositions of commensal bacteria among patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and PCa using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing

The Hydride Transfer Process in NADP-dependent Methylene-tetrahydromethanopterin Dehydrogenase.

NADP-dependent methylene-tetrahydromethanopterin (methylene-H4MPT) dehydrogenase (MtdA) catalyzes the reversible dehydrogenation of methylene-H4MPT to form methenyl-H4MPT+ by using NADP+ as a hydride acceptor. This hydride transfer reaction is involved in the oxidative metabolism from formaldehyde to CO2 in methylotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria. Here, we report on the crystal structures of the ternary MtdA-substrate complexes from Methylorubrum extorquens AM1 obtained in open and closed forms. Their conversion is accomplished by opening/closing the active site cleft via a 15° rotation of

Olivine-induced seasonal dynamics of eukaryotic microalgal and bacterial assemblages in mid-latitude nearshore marine ecosystems.

Ocean alkalinization, especially through olivine addition, represents a promising strategy for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels. The addition of olivine may have seasonal impacts on marine microalgal and bacterial communities, which have not been studied yet. In this study, controlled laboratory experiments were conducted in spring and autumn to measure the responses of microalgal and bacterial communities to olivine addition in different seasons. Our findings revealed that both communities demonstrated different seasonal response patterns. Olivine addition had no significant effect on Diatomea

Seasonal dynamics of plastic-degradation-associated microbiomes in an anthropogenically impacted Pearl River Estuary: A genome-resolved metagenomic study.

Estuarine sediments are important sinks for plastic debris and potential reservoirs of microbial functions involved in plastic transformation. Here, metagenomic sequencing and genome-resolved analyses were used to characterize the seasonal distribution and environmental associations of microbial taxa and genes potentially associated with plastic degradation in the Pearl River Estuary. The screened taxa differed between wet and dry seasons, with Priestia and Staphylococcus showing higher relative abundances in the dry season, whereas Vibrio, Photobacterium, Methylobacterium, and Ralstonia were

Pleural fluid microbiota as a biomarker for malignancy and prognosis.

Malignant pleural effusions (MPE) complicate malignancies and portend worse outcomes. MPE is comprised of various components, including immune cells, cancer cells, and cell-free DNA/RNA. There have been investigations into using these components to diagnose and prognosticate MPE. We hypothesize that the microbiome of MPE is unique and may be associated with diagnosis and prognosis. We compared the microbiota of MPE against microbiota of pleural effusions from non-malignant and paramalignant states. We collected a total of 165 pleural fluid samples from 165 subjects; Benign (n = 16), Paramalign

Heterologous expression of bacterial cytochrome P450 from Microbacterium keratanolyticum ZY and its application in dichloromethane dechlorination.

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a volatile halogenated hydrocarbon with teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Biodegradation is generally regarded as an effective and economical approach of pollutant disposal. In this study, a novel strain was isolated and its cytochrome P450 was heterologously expressed for DCM degradation. The isolate, Microbacterium keratanolyticum ZY, was characterized as a Gram-positive, rod-shaped and flagella-existed bacterium without spores (GenBank No. SUB8814364; CCTCC M 2019953). After successive whole-genome sequencing, assembly and annotation, eight identified

Eye of the Finch: characterization of the ocular microbiome of house finches in relation to mycoplasmal conjunctivitis.

Vertebrate ocular microbiomes are poorly characterized and virtually unexplored in wildlife species. Pathogen defense is considered a key function of microbiomes, but determining microbiome stability during disease is critical for understanding the role of resident microbial communities in infectious disease dynamics. Here, we characterize the ocular bacterial microbiome of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), prior to and during experimental infection with an inflammatory ocular disease, Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis, caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. In ocular tissues of healthy house finche

Evaluation of ecological impacts with ferrous iron addition in constructed wetland under perfluorooctanoic acid stress.

In this study, ferrous ion (Fe(II)) had the potential to promote ecological functions in constructed wetlands (CWs) under perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) stress. Concretely, Fe(II) at 30 mg/L and 20-30 mg/L even led to 11.37% increase of urease and 93.15-243.61% increase of nitrite oxidoreductase respectively compared to the control. Fe(II) promotion was also observed on Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira, Azospira, and Zoogloea by 1.00-6.50 folds, which might result from higher expression of nitrogen fixation and nitrite redox genes. These findings could be explanation for increase of ammonium removal by

A Key Regulator of the Glycolytic and Gluconeogenic Central Metabolic Pathways in Sinorhizobium meliloti.

The order Rhizobiales contains numerous agriculturally, biotechnologically, and medically important bacteria, including the rhizobia, and the genera Agrobacterium, Brucella, and Methylobacterium, among others. These organisms tend to be metabolically versatile, but there has been relatively little investigation into the regulation of their central carbon metabolic pathways. Here, RNA-sequencing and promoter fusion data are presented to show that the PckR protein is a key regulator of central carbon metabolism in Sinorhizobium meliloti; during growth with gluconeogenic substrates, PckR represse

Gene products and processes contributing to lanthanide homeostasis and methanol metabolism in Methylorubrum extorquens AM1.

Lanthanide elements have been recently recognized as "new life metals" yet much remains unknown regarding lanthanide acquisition and homeostasis. In Methylorubrum extorquens AM1, the periplasmic lanthanide-dependent methanol dehydrogenase XoxF1 produces formaldehyde, which is lethal if allowed to accumulate. This property enabled a transposon mutagenesis study and growth studies to confirm novel gene products required for XoxF1 function. The identified genes encode an MxaD homolog, an ABC-type transporter, an aminopeptidase, a putative homospermidine synthase, and two genes of unknown function
