Differences in mortality among Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban-American dialysis patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The Hispanic ethnic group is heterogeneous, with distinct genetic, cultural, and socioeconomic characteristics, but most prior studies of patients with end-stage renal disease focus on the overall Hispanic ethnic group without further granularity. We examined survival differences among Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban-American dialysis patients in the United States. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Data from individuals randomly selected for the End-Stage Renal Disease Clinical Performance Measures Project (2001 to 2005) were examine

Help seeking and barriers to treatment in a community sample of Mexican American and European American women with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined treatment seeking for eating disorders in Mexican American and European American women. METHOD: One hundred forty-five women with eating disorders (76 Mexican American, 69 European American) were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR (SCID-IV) and Eating Disorder Examination (EDE). RESULTS: Only 28% of the sample reported having sought treatment for their eating problems and only 17% had received treatment. Both groups were equally likely to believe they have significant eating problems and to want help. However, Mexican Americans were

Pain, sleep complaints, and depressive symptom clusters and their association with cognitive decline in older Mexican Americans.

INTRODUCTION: Older Mexican Americans, a fast-growing segment of the U.S. population, have high rates of pain, depression, and sleep complaints. Data are lacking on how these symptoms overlap and affect cognition in this population. We examined patterns of pain-sleep-depressive symptom clusters and their association with cognitive decline in older Mexican Americans. METHODS: We used data from the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (2010-2016), a study of older Mexican Americans in Southwestern U.S. We used latent class analysis to identify clusters bas

Prevalence and factors associated with liver fibrosis among first-degree relatives of Mexican Americans with hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Whether hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) increases the familial risk for hepatic fibrosis has not been thoroughly explored, particularly in Mexican Americans who are disproportionately affected by obesity and metabolic syndrome. We evaluated the risk of significant hepatic fibrosis in first-degree relatives of Mexican American adults with HCC. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of a prospective cohort of Mexican American probands with HCC and first-degree relatives enrolled in the Hispanic Liver Cancer Cohort study. We evaluated the prevalence of hepatic fibro

Body mass index and physical frailty among older Mexican Americans: Findings from an 18-year follow up.

PURPOSES: The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and frailty in older Mexican Americans has not been previously studied. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between BMI and frailty among non-frail older Mexican Americans at baseline over 18 years of follow up. METHODS: Longitudinal population-based study of 1,648 non-institutionalized Mexican Americans aged ≥ 67 years from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (1995/96-2012/13). Frailty phenotype was defined as meeting three or more of the following: unintentional weight

A Longitudinal Study of Cognitive and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Disablement Among the Oldest Mexican Americans.

ObjectivesMexican Americans live longer on average than other ethnic groups, but often with protracted cognitive and physical disability. Little is known, however, about the role of cognitive decline for transitions in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and tertiary outcomes of the IADL disablement for the oldest old (after 80 years old). Methods We employ the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (2010-2011, 2012-2013, and 2016, N = 1,078) to investigate the longitudinal patterns of IADL decline using latent transition analysis. Six-month prevalence of specific psychiatric disorders among Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites in Los Angeles.

The current prevalence of DSM-III psychiatric disorders was assessed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) as part of a Los Angeles household population survey. The Los Angeles prevalence estimates were compared with sex- and age-adjusted estimates from four other US field sites, all of which were part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) program. Overall, few significant differences in household population rates were found between Los Angeles and the other ECA sites. Within the Los Angeles household sample, the current prevalence of disorder among Mexican Americans was compared w

Multimorbidity Is Associated With Pain Over 6 Years Among Community-Dwelling Mexican Americans Aged 80 and Older.

INTRODUCTION: Multimorbidity, the co-occurrence of two or more chronic conditions, is common among older adults and is associated with decreased quality of life, greater disability, and increased mortality. Yet, the association of multimorbidity with pain, another significant contributor to decreased quality of life, has not been widely studied. This is especially understudied among very old (aged ≥ 80) Mexican Americans, a fast-growing segment of the United States (US) population. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of multimorbidity with pain in very old Mexican Americans, over six years o

Air pollution, noise exposure, and metabolic syndrome - A cohort study in elderly Mexican-Americans in Sacramento area.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that air pollutants may increase the incidence of metabolic syndrome, but the potential impact from traffic sources is not well-understood. This study aimed to investigate associations between traffic-related nitrogen oxides (NOx) or noise pollution and risk of incident metabolic syndrome and its components in an elderly Mexican-American population. METHODS: A total of 1,554 Mexican-American participants of the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging (SALSA) cohort were followed from 1998 to 2007. We used anthropometric measures and biomarkers to define me

Loneliness among very old Mexican Americans: findings from the Hispanic Established Populations Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly.

Increasing numbers of researchers are finding that loneliness is a significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality, and several variables have been found to be closely related to the experience of loneliness among elders. However, much of the research has focused on the general older population, with no research to date focusing on minority populations. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and the correlates of loneliness among a community-dwelling older Mexican American population. This study used a three-item loneliness scale to determine the prevalence of loneline

An ultrasound survey of gallbladder disease among Mexican Americans in Starr County, Texas: frequencies and risk factors.

The Mexican-American population of south Texas has been shown previously to have elevated frequencies of gallbladder disease, based on medical history. In the present study, ultrasonography was employed to screen 1004 randomly selected individuals aged 15 to 74 years. Among women, the frequency of previous cholecystectomy was 10.0%; the frequency of stones on ultrasound was 12.2%. In men, the respective frequencies were 1.7% and 6.3%. Highest frequencies of gallbladder disease occurred among those aged 45 years or above: 40.2% and 19.2% among women and men, respectively. Non-insulin-dependent

A community survey of psychological impairment among Anglo- and Mexican Americans and its relationship to service utilization.

Discussions of Mexican American mental health need have been limited to analyses of service utilization statistics, most of which have shown Mexican Americans to use mental health services proportionally less than other racial/ethnic groups. Consequently, Mexican Americans have been viewed as a group having greater unmet mental health needs. Yet, these utilization-based needs assessments make an implicit and untested assumption: that the proportion of the psychologically impaired is comparable across racial/ethnic groups. The purpose of the present investigation was, first, to contribute to a

Family stress processes and drug and alcohol use by Mexican American adolescents.

The present study examines the influence of economic and family stress processes on change in drug and alcohol use in a cohort of 478 Mexican American youth (50.8% female) followed longitudinally beginning in Grade 5 when the youth averaged 10.4 years of age. Adolescents, their mothers (median age 36 at Grade 5), and their fathers (median age 39 at Grade 5) were assessed on economic hardship (Grades 5 through 7), family stress processes (Grades 5 through 9), and adolescent substance use (Grades 7 through 9). Hypotheses were derived from a culturally informed family stress model (FSM), which pr

The Perceived Role of Family in Heroin Use Behaviors of Mexican-American Men.

The influence of the family is not well understood as it relates to drug use behaviors of Hispanic male adults. We examined the family's influence on drug use behavior, as perceived by Hispanic men who use heroin. One-time qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 current and former heroin users who participated in a larger study on long-term heroin use in Mexican-American men. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Three main themes emerged: family as a supportive environment for heroin use; heroin as a family legacy; and, the family's strategies for helping to stop using

Perceived Discrimination, Peer Influence and Sexual Behaviors in Mexican American Preadolescents.

Both discrimination and sexual health disparities have significant negative health implications for Latina/o preadolescent youth, including negative mental health outcomes, STIs/HIV, unintended pregnancy, and ongoing poverty. Studying these links within this population, therefore, has significant public health relevance, both in terms of promoting sexual health in general as well as serving the specific needs of Latina/o youth. This study explored the relationship between perceived discrimination, peer influence and sexual behaviors among 438 Mexican American preadolescents in the Southwest Un
