Visible, vulnerable and vital: leadership lessons from building belonging in healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Newcomers to healthcare organisations often experience unspoken barriers to belonging, including cultural dissonance, microaggressions and systemic exclusion. As a visible minority and female leader, I frequently became a point of cultural reassurance for new staff seeking both guidance and recognition. REFLECTION: One interaction in particular, a question about where to find biryani spices locally, illustrated that newcomer staff were often seeking more than orientation to organisational processes. Many were also searching for connection, cultural familiarity and a sense of belon

[The reality of transgender employees in Poland: legal aspects, assessment of work capacity, and mental health].

Transgender people in Poland face numerous legal challenges and problems arising from functioning in the professional environment. The procedure for legal gender recognition is not governed by uniform procedural regulations, which causes a high level of stress and uncertainty relating to the final court decision. Even in cases where the ruling is favourable to the applicant, there is a lack of consistent administrative guidelines enabling prompt and safe updating of personal data in official documents. Additionally, before completing the legal transition process, transgender individuals often

The power with us: experiences of resisting oppression among Black women physicians in academic medicine.

Black women physicians often face bias, discrimination, and mistreatment within the academic environment because of their racial and gender identities. This shows up as microaggressions, exclusion, and minimal opportunities to advance their careers despite their expertise, contributions, and leadership to support institutions with creating environments that prioritize broad representation, welcoming and respectful spaces, and addressing barriers that prohibit individuals from thriving. Their first-hand experiences with intersecting oppressions told in their own voices as clinicians, educators,

Structural Racism in Psychiatric Research Careers: Eradicating Barriers to a More Diverse Workforce.

Investigators from minoritized backgrounds are underrepresented in psychiatric research. That underrepresentation contributes to disparities in outcomes of access to mental health care. Drawing on lived experience, scholarly qualitative reports, and empirical data, the authors review how the underrepresentation of minoritized researchers arises from interlocking, self-reinforcing effects of structural biases in our research training and funding institutions. Minoritized researchers experience diminished early access to advanced training and opportunities, stereotype threats and microaggression

Exploring the Role of Race and Ethnicity in Resident-to-Resident Aggression: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Resident-to-resident aggression (RRA) is the most common form of elder mistreatment in long-term care settings. Although race/ethnicity is likely a contributing factor, research has been limited in examining the role of residents' race and ethnicity in RRA. We sought to define and qualitatively examine the predisposing factors and acute precipitants of race/ethnicity-related resident-to-resident aggression (RE-RRA). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Guided by the socioecological model, events-based perspective, and conceptual work on stigma-based aggression, we developed

"Is That Really a Service Dog?": How Service Dog Handlers With Invisible Disabilities in the United States Communicate to Manage Stigma With Implications for Policy and Interventions.

In the United States of America, the Americans with Disabilities Act allows for service dogs, dogs that are task-trained to assist disabled individuals in the management of their condition, to accompany their handler in public spaces. Recently, widespread media coverage of fake service dogs-pet dogs misrepresented as service dogs-has led to a perceived prevalence of fake service dogs. This, combined with a lack of knowledge about laws protecting service dog handlers, complicates the lives of legitimate service dog handlers, especially those with invisible disabilities who have no visible marks

An exploratory study of the correlates of weight-based mistreatment at work.

Weight-based mistreatment (WBM), which reflects mistreatment through hostility, threats, underhanded comments, physical violence, or microaggressions that explicitly targets a person's larger body size, occurs frequently in the workplace. To begin to uncover why it occurs, this research documents correlates of WBM by investigating stigmatization of weight through four conceptual frames: stereotyping, the justification-suppression model of prejudice, objectification theory, and occupational contexts. Across a sample of 1,008 self-identified larger-bodied respondents, 383 paired coworkers, and d

Experiences and perceptions of sexism in dementia research careers: A global cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Sexism is prevalent in academia and is a crucial factor driving women out of the academic workforce. However, sexism in dementia research remains underexplored. This study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of early-career dementia researchers (ECDRs) with sexism in the field. METHODS: In September/October 2021, a global online survey was conducted targeting ECDRs. The survey assessed their career experiences, including sexism, and was distributed through networks, social media, and e-mail lists. Responses were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statisti

Asian American client perspectives on racism-related discussions in psychotherapy.

This study examined how Asian American clients experience and discuss racism-related events in psychotherapy and how therapist responses shape therapeutic outcomes. Eleven Asian American adults who had discussed at least one racism-related incident in therapy completed semistructured interviews, recounting of the racist incident in therapy and the aftermath of those conversations. Interviews were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research and linguistic analysis of emotion-word usage. Participants described a range of direct and vicarious racism experiences, most commonly workplace or scho

The association between stigma consciousness and weight stigma, psychological well-being, positive body image, and eating behaviors.

Stigma consciousness refers to an individual difference in the extent to which members of stereotyped groups believe that their stereotyped status permeates interactions with out-group members. This investigation examined whether stigma consciousness contributed unique variance in predicting mental well-being, and eating and positive body image outcomes (i.e., depression, self-esteem, body appreciation, intuitive eating, emotional eating) after controlling for experienced weight stigma (EWS), including fat microaggressions (FM), and internalized weight bias (IWB). Study participants (N = 288)

Social Determinants Influencing the Non-Adoption of Norms Favorable to the Prevention and Control of Type 2 Diabetes: Qualitative Research.

Diet, physical activity, and body shape play an essential role in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and are the social dimensions most targeted by health professionals in their practices or intervention aimed at preventing and controlling T2D. However, several interventions focus more on individual factors and less on social determinants likely to influence the adoption of dietary, body, and physical activity standards favorable to the prevention and control of T2D. This study aims to explore the social determinants influencing the rejection or adoption of dietary, bodily, and physical

Burnout Among Service Providers for People Living with HIV: Factors Related to Coping and Resilience.

Individuals who provide services for people living with HIV (PLWH) face numerous work-related challenges, including psychosocial and structural factors affecting the quality of care that they provide. Little is known about the factors that relate to burnout among service providers for PLWH. The current study seeks to examine the factors associated with burnout and the role of resilience and coping in the context of burnout. Via convenience sampling, data was collected from 28 professionals (e.g., peer counselors, HIV testers, case managers/case workers, group facilitators, or social workers) s

Black and African American Residents' Perspectives of Racial Affinity Groups in a Pediatric Residency Program.

PURPOSE: Racial affinity groups have emerged in residency training programs as part of inclusion and anti-racism efforts; however, their use in medical education is less studied. This study explores Black/African American pediatric residents' perspectives on racial affinity groups during residency training. METHOD: We conducted semi-structured interviews with Black/African American pediatric resident physicians, including recent graduates, at a large, university-affiliated pediatric residency program. We generated themes using reflexive thematic analysis and a conceptual framework of counter-

Friendships and Coping Among Adolescents with LGBTQ+ Parents.

Adolescents with LGBTQ+ parents and LGBTQ+ adolescents navigate unique social and identity-related challenges as compared to those without minoritized sexual and/or gender identities. Adolescents with LGBTQ+ parents (regardless of their own sexual or gender identity) and adolescents who personally identify as LGBTQ+ are distinct populations, though they sometimes overlap. Research on adolescents with LGBTQ+ parents has often focused on parent-adolescent relationships and family structures. How do friends help youth cope with identity-based minority stressors, like peer microaggressions, bullyi

The impact of intersectionality on the experience of medical trainees.

Diverse trainees have different training experiences than non-diverse trainees; however, it has not been demonstrated if the number of diverse traits (DTs) (i.e. intersectionality) contributes to worse experiences. Our objective was to understand if the number of DTs a trainee has impacts their training experience. We distributed a survey to medical trainees at Mass General Brigham from 15/12/23 to 15/4/24. DTs were based on race/ethnicity, gender-identity, sexual orientation, birthplace, disability, and highest parental education. A total of 134 responses were obtained. Respondents with 1 DT

Intersectional Discrimination in Mental Health Care: A Systematic Review With Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Discriminatory practices in mental health care undermine the right to health of marginalized service users. Intersectional approaches enable consideration of multiple forms of discrimination that occur simultaneously and remain invisible in single-axis analyses. The authors reviewed intersectionality-informed qualitative literature on discriminatory practices in mental health care to better understand the experiences of marginalized service users and their evaluation and navigation of mental health care. METHODS: The authors searched EBSCO, PubMed, MEDLINE, and JSTOR for studies pu

Working life experiences of people who stutter in Finland: Recommendations for enhancing inclusive communication at work.

PURPOSE: People who stutter (PWS) face public stigma, characterized by negative societal beliefs and stereotypes. Due to lack of awareness, PWS may be perceived as inferior and less intelligent, capable, and social, affecting their psychological well-being. While some aspects of the impact of stuttering-such as income, role entrapment, and discrimination-have been explored in previous research, less is known about the deeper personal experiences of PWS in working life. This study highlights the workplace experiences of PWS, their personal aspirations, and ideas for improvement. By understandin
